Bangkok to Koh Samui

Bangkok Airways built Samui's airport and remains the only airline flying Bangkok to Samui nonstop — up to around 30 departures a day in high season, spread from early morning to about 8pm, all from Suvarnabhumi (BKK). The flight itself is about 65 minutes, and the open-air, garden-terminal arrival is genuinely pleasant. Booked three to six weeks out, one-way fares run roughly $70–100; last-minute and peak-season fares push past $145. There are no budget-airline fares on this route, because there's no budget airline allowed on it.

Two things soften the price. First, Bangkok Airways fares include a checked bag and a lounge-style snack area even in economy, so the comparison against a low-cost carrier isn't quite fare-versus-fare. Second, booked well ahead for shoulder season, the premium over the Surat Thani workaround shrinks to $30–40 — a fair price for saving three hours and two transfers, especially with kids or dive gear in tow.

Samui's airport sits on the island's northeast corner, 10–20 minutes from Chaweng, Choeng Mon, and Bophut. Grab and prepaid taxi counters cover the last leg for a few hundred baht.

Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, and Thai Lion Air all fly Bangkok (Don Mueang) to Surat Thani in about 75 minutes, with one-way fares commonly $25–80. From Surat Thani's arrivals hall, Lomprayah and Phantip sell a single through-ticket — coach or minivan to the pier plus the ferry to Samui — for roughly 500–650 baht (about $15–18). AirAsia also sells the whole thing as one flight-plus-ferry booking, which is the simplest version of this route.

Budget 5–7 hours airport-to-hotel: the flight, an hour or so from airport to pier, a 1.5-hour crossing, and the waits in between. Total cost usually lands at $40–65 — about half the direct flight, for three extra hours. That math is why this is the default route for backpackers and long-stay travelers.

One caution: book the combo as a single ticket rather than assembling flight, transfer, and ferry separately. Combined tickets mean the operator holds the ferry connection if your flight or bus runs late; separate tickets mean you eat the loss.

Sleeper trains leave Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat terminal (not the old Hua Lamphong station, despite what older blogs say) through the late afternoon and evening for Surat Thani. The schedule sweet spot is train #85, departing around 19:50 and arriving about 06:23 — early enough to make the morning ferries with time to spare. A second-class air-con berth runs roughly 800–1,100 baht ($25–34); lowers are wider and worth the small premium. Note that the station, Phun Phin, sits 14 km west of Surat Thani town — the bus-ferry combo operators sell through-tickets right at the station, which handles that leg for you.

From the mainland, car ferries cross from Donsak pier: Seatran sails to Nathon roughly hourly from 05:00 to 19:00 (about 1.5 hours, passenger tickets from ~260 baht), and Raja Ferry runs to Lipa Noi from 05:00 with passenger fares from 190 baht. Lomprayah's fast catamarans take a different path entirely — via Chumphon to Pralarn pier near Maenam — with limited daily sailings.

All-in, the train route costs about 1,100–1,700 baht ($34–52) and takes 15–17 hours door to door, most of them asleep. You save a hotel night and arrive at breakfast time. The risk to manage: if anything delays you past mid-afternoon on the mainland, the last Donsak ferries sail around 19:00 — miss them and you're overnighting in Surat Thani. Through-tickets, again, are the insurance.
