About Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is Thailand's southernmost island, a speck in the Adang archipelago closer to Malaysia's Langkawi than to any Thai town of size — and the distance is exactly what has kept it special. The water here is the clearest in the country: the island sits inside Tarutao National Marine Park, and the snorkelling off Sunrise Beach's sandbar or around neighbouring Koh Adang rivals what most islands need a boat trip to reach. Three main beaches divide the moods — busy Pattaya Beach where the boats land, sunrise-facing Sunrise Beach with the postcard sandbar, and quieter Sunset Beach — all linked by a ten-minute walk through the Walking Street's restaurants and dive shops.
Lipe is small, car-free, and unashamedly a beach-and-water island: the daily rhythm is snorkel trip, seafood dinner, repeat. It's also firmly seasonal. November to April everything is open and boats run constantly; from May to October the monsoon cuts ferry service to a trickle and a large share of resorts and restaurants shutter. The island's Chao Ley (sea gypsy) community predates tourism and still runs many of the longtail taxi boats — the island's original name, and much of its charm, is theirs.

Getting there
Speedboats run from Pak Bara pier (Satun) in about 1.5 hours (฿650–900). Most visitors fly or take the train to Hat Yai, then a combo minivan-and-boat ticket (~4.5 hours door to door). In high season, ferries also connect from Koh Lanta and Langkawi (Malaysia).

How do you get to Koh Lipe?
Via Pak Bara pier in Satun province: speedboats take about 1.5 hours (฿650–900). From Hat Yai's airport or train station, combo tickets (minivan + boat, ~฿700–900) take about 4.5 hours door to door. In high season, island-hopping ferries arrive from Koh Lanta (~3 hrs) and Langkawi in Malaysia (~1.5 hrs, an official immigration crossing). There is no airport and no car ferry.
Is there a national park fee?
Yes — Koh Lipe sits inside Tarutao National Marine Park, and foreigners pay ฿200 on arrival at the beach (collected at the floating pontoon in high season). Keep the ticket: it's checked on snorkelling trips to Koh Adang and the park islands, which are covered by the same fee.
Which beach should you stay on?
Sunrise Beach for the famous water and sandbar — it has the best swimming and snorkelling straight off the sand. Pattaya Beach has the widest resort and restaurant choice but takes the boat traffic. Sunset Beach is the quiet, budget-leaning corner with the best evening sky. Nowhere is more than a 15-minute walk from anywhere else, so this choice matters less than on big islands.
Is Koh Lipe open in the low season?
Technically yes, practically only just. From May to October the monsoon reduces Pak Bara boats to one or two a day (weather permitting), the Lanta and Langkawi ferries stop, and many resorts, dive shops, and restaurants close outright. Seas can be rough and snorkel trips cancel often. If you can only come in those months, a Gulf-side island like Koh Samui or Koh Chang's shoulder weeks are safer bets.
