7 Days in Thailand
One week. Three cities. Thailand in full.
Seven days in Thailand is the most common trip length for first-timers — and the classic Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Phuket triangle is a classic for good reason. You get the capital's energy and temple culture, the north's cooler mountain air and elephants, and the south's turquoise waters and island scenery. Each leg is a 1–2 hour flight apart (budget carriers run multiple daily), so transit is painless. This itinerary is efficient without being frantic: two nights in Bangkok, two in Chiang Mai, three in Phuket, giving each destination enough time to breathe.
Day 1
Arrive in Bangkok — Settle & Explore
Most international flights land at Suvarnabhumi Airport, connected to the city centre by the Airport Rail Link in about 30 minutes (฿45). Your neighbourhood choice for the first night matters: Sukhumvit puts you on the BTS Skytrain with excellent restaurant access; Silom and Sathorn suit those who want polished surroundings and easy access to rooftop bars; the riverside area is atmospheric but taxis are your main transport. Bangkok at night is one of the great first impressions in travel — the street food culture alone is worth staying up for. The hotel picks below span the main tourist districts; the restaurant recommendations cover everything from serious Thai cooking to relaxed street-food-style dining.

Day 1 logistics — book your airport transfer
The Airport Rail Link is cheap but requires a luggage-hauling transfer to BTS. After a 12-hour flight, the easier move is a pre-booked Kiwitaxi straight to your hotel (~฿900 with code THAILAND5). Your driver tracks the flight, so a 3-hour delay doesn't strand you.

Day 2
Bangkok — Temples, the Royal District & the River
Bangkok's old city is where the capital's history lives — a dense cluster of royal temples, palace grounds, and riverside shrines that date back centuries. Start early (before 9 am) to beat both the tour groups and the heat; dress modestly or you won't get past the gate. The Chao Phraya river is the old city's connective tissue: ferries are the most atmospheric way to move between the major sites, and the river views from the west bank temples are extraordinary. By afternoon, retreat to air-conditioning — a museum, gallery, or a long restaurant lunch. As the light softens, the rooftop bar scene in the Silom and Sathorn districts offers Bangkok's most dramatic skyline perspective.

Day 3
Fly to Chiang Mai — Old City & Night Market
Budget airlines run the Bangkok–Chiang Mai route dozens of times daily; a morning flight gets you north by midday. The shift in atmosphere is immediate — the traffic thins, the air cools, and the pace drops noticeably. Chiang Mai's Old City is a walkable square surrounded by a moat, crammed with centuries-old temples in various states of glorious decay. The afternoon is best spent wandering on foot; the evening belongs to the night market culture that Chiang Mai does better than anywhere in Thailand. Your hotel base makes a real difference here — Old City proximity versus the trendier Nimman neighbourhood suits different travelling styles.

Chiang Mai — Mountain Temple & Elephant Sanctuary
The mountain that looms over Chiang Mai holds a revered temple at its summit — a golden chedi set at over 1,000 metres, reached via a winding road through forest. The views across the valley on a clear morning are the best in northern Thailand. Afternoons in Chiang Mai belong to the experiences that make the north unique: ethical elephant sanctuaries run by local families are among the most affecting things you can do in the country. Choose a sanctuary that allows walking alongside elephants rather than rides; the interaction is more genuine and the welfare standards are meaningfully higher. The activity providers below run the most reputable excursions; the wellness and restaurant picks are for the evening.

Day 5
Fly to Phuket — Arrive & First Beach
A morning flight south brings a complete change of register — mountains swap for ocean, linen layers drop, and the pace slows to something measured by tides. Phuket's beaches vary significantly in character: the west coast's quieter bays draw those after space and scenery over social energy; the busier strips give you infrastructure and convenience. Whichever you choose, the first afternoon ritual is the same — a swim, a beachside lunch, and a slow walk as the heat eases. Sunset cocktails on the beach followed by a dinner of fresh-caught seafood is as good a first night as this part of the world offers.

Day 6
Phuket — Full-Day Boat Tour
Use your one full day in Phuket's waters wisely — book a full-day boat tour to either the surrounding island group to the southwest or the dramatic limestone bay to the north. Both are genuinely world-class experiences; the island trip is more about snorkelling and swimming in turquoise water, the bay tour more about kayaking through sea caves and astonishing scenery. Depart by 8 am to reach the main sites ahead of the crowds, and book through an operator with a strong safety record and good guides. You'll return by late afternoon with the evening free — the Old Town's restaurant scene is excellent and feels a world away from the beach-resort strip.

Phuket Airport is 45–60 minutes from most beaches by taxi or Grab; build in extra time during the December–January peak. Any hours before departure are well spent browsing the markets or the independent boutiques of the Old Town.

Essential Tips for 7 Days in Thailand
Book Domestic Flights Early and Direct
Budget carriers (AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air) offer Bangkok–Chiang Mai and Bangkok–Phuket from ฿800 one-way if booked 2–4 weeks ahead. Book directly on airline websites — third-party aggregators often add hidden fees. Carry-on-only fares are cheapest; check baggage adds ฿300–500 per leg. Download the airline app for mobile boarding passes.
Get a Thai SIM Card on Arrival
Buy a tourist SIM at the airport arrivals hall — AIS, True Move H, and DTAC all sell 7–15 day unlimited data packages for ฿299–599. Coverage is excellent nationwide. A local SIM lets you use Grab (ride-hailing), Google Maps offline, and stay connected without hunting for WiFi. Bring a SIM ejector tool or ask the booth staff.
Pack for Temples and Beaches in One Bag
Thailand's dress code contrasts are extreme: temples require covered shoulders and knees; beaches require swimwear. Pack lightweight linen trousers and a loose cotton shirt that double as temple-appropriate and travel-comfortable. A sarong works as a beach towel, temple cover-up, and picnic blanket. Roll, don't fold — you'll fit more in a carry-on.
Tipping Culture Is Low-Key
Thailand is not a heavy tipping culture. At restaurants, round up the bill or leave 20–50 baht for good service. Hotel porters appreciate ฿20–50 per bag. Spa therapists: ฿50–100 per treatment. Taxi drivers: round up to the nearest ฿10. Tour guides: ฿100–200 for a full-day trip. Tipping is always appreciated but never expected or demanded.
