The North Gate Jazz Co-Op
Tucked just outside Chiang Mai's old city moat, the North Gate Jazz Co-Op has earned a devoted following as one of the city's most atmospheric live music venues. Open every night of the week, it draws a lively, mixed crowd of locals and travellers who come for raw, soulful jazz performed by a rotating cast of talented musicians. The multi-level venue adds to the experience, with a rooftop bar area that comes alive before the main co-op opens downstairs, giving early arrivals a chance to ease into the evening with cocktails and music from above. The atmosphere is casual and communal, with an energy that builds steadily through the night. Seating spans multiple floors, including a third-floor outdoor area with stools for those who prefer a bit of fresh air while they listen. Drinks are reasonably priced, making it an easy choice for a relaxed night out without spending much. The practical reality is that this place fills up fast. Arriving close to the 7:00 PM opening is strongly recommended to secure indoor seating. Those who show up a little before opening can head to the upper floor bar, where live music typically begins around 7:30 PM, offering a solid hour of atmosphere before the main room gets underway. The venue is accessible on foot from most old city accommodation, making it a natural stop on any evening in Chiang Mai.

Visitor Reviews
Such a great experience. If you get there early enough/before 1900 you can go to the 4th floor and listen to music and get cocktails before the co-op opens. We sat upstairs and just listened for an hour then came downstairs and listened more. Definitely recommend picking one or the other though because when we came back downstairs it was already packed inside for the music. Either way, recommend going and enjoying the live jazz music!
Great music, fantastic atmosphere, amazing vibe! It is definetely worth to spend some time for while you are in Chiang Mai. The trick is the music starts at 7.30 pm at the upper floor and starting from 8.30 pm it is moved to the ground floor. Since the seats are limited it will be a smart move to go early and enjoy your cocktail while waiting.
North Gate Jazz is an absolute vibe! 🎷 The music was incredible — raw, energetic, and full of soul. The atmosphere is vibrant and alive, with people from everywhere just enjoying good jazz together. One of the best nights I’ve had in Chiang Mai. Must-visit if you love live music!

Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars
Carry Your Passport or a Copy
Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.
Know the Closing Times
Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.
Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously
Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
