Phuket Old Town

4.5(2,589 reviews)

Phuket Old Town centres on Thanon Talang and the surrounding streets, where rows of colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses dating from the late 19th century reflect the island's history as a Chinese and Portuguese trading hub during the tin mining era. The architecture alone draws visitors, but the neighbourhood functions as a living district rather than a preserved set piece — independent boutiques, family-run restaurants, active temples, antique shops, and street art sit alongside everyday residential and commercial life. Travellers familiar with George Town in Penang will recognise a similar character, though Phuket Old Town retains its own distinct atmosphere and is notably less commercialised than the island's resort areas. On foot is the best way to explore, with every street offering photogenic details — vintage doorways, painted facades, and hand-lettered signs. Late afternoons are particularly atmospheric as the light softens and street food stalls become active, while early mornings offer quieter conditions for photography and unhurried browsing. The area rewards slow exploration over a dedicated half-day or more. Good to know: The cool season between November and February offers the most comfortable walking conditions, as heat and humidity can make daytime exploration tiring during other months. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and comfortable shoes suited to uneven pavements. When entering temple areas, dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees. Most shops and eateries operate during daylight hours and tend to close by early evening, so plan accordingly.

Phuket Old Town – A Charming Blend of History, Culture & Shopping Phuket Old Town is a beautiful heritage district that dates back to the late 19th century, when Chinese and Portuguese traders settled here during the island’s booming tin-mining era. The iconic Sino-Portuguese shophouses, colorful buildings, and preserved streets still reflect that rich cultural past. When it comes to shopping, Phuket Old Town is a paradise for anyone looking for authentic local products and souvenirs. From handcrafted items, vibrant textiles, spices, tropical skincare, and boutique cosmetics to unique art pieces—there’s something for every taste. If you're interested in pearls and fine jewelry, don’t miss TekHeng, a lovely family-run store known for its high-quality pearl jewelry and warm, cozy atmosphere. Phuket Old Town is a very charming area with a Portuguese-inspired atmosphere — something you really don’t expect to find in Thailand. It’s full of cute boutiques and, surprisingly, very few 7-Eleven stores, which actually helps preserve its unique character. It’s perfect for a day trip and offers plenty of great photo spots, so wear a colorful outfit if you’re into that. Prices for food and drinks are generally lower compared to other areas, which is a nice bonus. Overall, it’s a lively and cozy town to stroll through. There’s also a great food court right in the center of town. If you’re visiting by scooter, you can park there easily and start your visit with a delicious meal (Pun Te Phuket Food Center) Highly recommended 🩷🧡

Phuket Old Town A beautiful mix of culture, food, and history. The colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses make every street feel photogenic, especially in the late afternoon when the lights come on. The area is walkable and full of cute cafés, local restaurants, and small boutiques selling handmade products. There’s a great mix of street food and stylish coffee shops, and the Sunday Walking Street Market brings the whole place to life with music, snacks, and local crafts. Even on regular days, it’s peaceful and charming—perfect for slow exploring. If you love architecture, good food, and relaxed city vibes, Phuket Old Town should be at the top of your list.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
