Getting there and around
- Club Med fronts about 90 percent of the beach, so walk in from the north or south end. Shops and restaurants are on the parallel road a block back.
- Karon Beach is about 600 m north, Karon Viewpoint 3 km, Promthep Cape 10 km and the Big Buddha 12 km.

Why go, and how to do it well
Kata is a 1.5 km bay on Phuket's southwest coast, between Karon to the north and Kata Noi to the south, with soft sand, clear blue water in the high season and a small island offshore that ends up in every sunset photo. It's one of the island's most popular beaches after Patong, with a calmer, family-friendly feel and none of Patong's go-go bars.
One thing catches people out. Club Med takes up about 90 percent of the beachfront, so you reach the sand from the two ends, and most hotels, restaurants and shops are on the parallel road a block back. Sunbeds and umbrellas rent on the sand, and the front row fills early in high season.
The beach changes with the season. From about December to April the sea is calm and clear for swimming. In the low season the swell turns Kata into one of Phuket's main surf beaches, with boards and lessons for beginners, and the rip currents make the flags worth watching. For a wave in any month there's also the artificial one at Super Surf Kata.
Sunset is the time to be here, when the longtails sit in silhouette and the whole strip turns into a viewing gallery. Karon is about 600 meters north if you want more space, Karon Viewpoint is 3 km away, and the Big Buddha and Promthep Cape are each 10 to 12 km.

Very nice beach, clean white sand, you can rent two sun beds with umbrella for 200 batt. Lots of water sports, nice waves. One of the best spots to enjoy the sunset in phucket.
Kata beach is very nice but busy! Unlike other photos and videos, we found there was little space on the sand not already taken up with rented sunshades and loungers. Even the shady, wet area to the far left of the beach was stacked with sunshades. We did find some rocks to perch on though and had the best beach snorkelling here!
Beach is very crowded. Full of sunbeds! The water is so shallow you need to go a good distance if you want to swim. Even if you stay in Kata Beach I'll recommend Karon Beach which is at 10 minutes walking distance from kTa center.

Go Early for Empty Sand
Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
Explore Beyond the Main Strip
Every popular beach area has quieter alternatives nearby. Rent a scooter and ride 10 minutes from Patong to find Freedom Beach, or head to Phuket's northeast coast for nearly empty shores.
