Koh Samui to Koh Phi Phi

Gulf to Andaman in one long day, or one short flight and a boat

By Mac Kiley · 8 min read · Updated Oct 31, 2026

There's no boat from Koh Samui to Koh Phi Phi. Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand and Phi Phi is in the Andaman Sea, on the other side of the peninsula, so every trip crosses the mainland. The easy way is one combined ticket. A ferry takes you from Samui to Donsak pier, a bus or van drives about three hours across to Krabi, and a second boat carries you to Tonsai pier on Phi Phi, 7 to 9 hours in all from about ฿1,110.

Check live Koh Samui → Koh Phi Phi times and seats on 12Go

The ticket I'd book is Lomprayah's, leaving Nathon pier at 08:30 and landing on Phi Phi at 15:30 for ฿1,550, or ฿1,700 with a pickup from your Samui hotel. Every combo leaves Samui by 10:00, so this is a morning decision. If you'd rather keep most of the day, fly Bangkok Airways to Phuket or Krabi and take the boat from there.

The short answer

Book a combined ferry, bus and boat ticket that leaves Samui in the morning. Lomprayah's 08:30 from Nathon reaches Tonsai pier at 15:30 for ฿1,550, and Phantip's 08:00 is the cheapest at about ฿1,110. The fastest plan is the 08:15 Bangkok Airways flight to Phuket and the afternoon ferry from Rassada, on Phi Phi by mid-afternoon. There's no direct ferry.

Key Facts

There's no direct ferry, because the islands face different seas

Every ticket is three legs on one booking, a ferry from Samui to Donsak, a bus or van about 210 km across to Krabi, and a boat out to Phi Phi. Booked as one ticket, the connections are the operator's problem.

Every combo leaves Samui between 04:00 and 10:00

The boats from Krabi to Phi Phi stop in the afternoon, so nothing later than about 10:00 reaches Phi Phi the same day. Most tickets land at Tonsai between 15:30 and 18:00.

Lomprayah is ฿1,550 from Nathon, ฿1,700 from your hotel

The 08:30 from Nathon reaches Tonsai at 15:30. Lomprayah's own timetable sells a Samui hotel pickup at 07:00 for ฿1,700.

The cheapest ticket is about ฿1,110

Phantip's 08:00 from its office in Nathon also reaches Tonsai at 15:30, or ฿1,260 with a 06:15 van pickup. Raja's 04:00 from Lipa Noi is about ฿1,280 and takes 13 hours.

Flying saves a few hours, not the whole day

Bangkok Airways flies Samui to Phuket 6–8 times a day and to Krabi once a day. 12Go sells the 08:15 to Phuket with the 13:30 boat from Rassada, on Phi Phi by mid-afternoon, for about ฿4,200–4,400.

Bring ฿20 in cash for Tonsai pier

Everyone pays it stepping off the boat. Maya Bay's ฿400 park fee is separate, and the bay closes from 1 August to 30 September.

The flight-and-ferry row is 12Go's self-connect ticket (you change between the airport and Rassada yourself). The Krabi row is the Bangkok Airways nonstop plus a Krabi Town speedboat, booked separately.

The One-Ticket Combos, From Easiest to Cheapest

Every combo does the same three things. A boat crosses from Samui to Donsak pier on the mainland, a bus or van drives about three hours across the peninsula to Krabi, and a second boat takes you out to Phi Phi. What you're choosing between is the Samui end, the comfort of each leg and the price.

Lomprayah is the one I'd book. Its catamaran leaves Nathon at 08:30, the fastest of the boats to Donsak, and the coach and the Phi Phi boat are timed to it, reaching Tonsai at 15:30 for ฿1,550 on 12Go. Its own timetable sells a pickup from any Samui hotel at 07:00 for ฿1,700, which saves the drive across to Nathon. One 12Go reviewer in July 2026 had an unplanned hour and a half waiting in Krabi, so I'd carry lunch and not plan anything tight on Phi Phi that evening.

Phantip is the budget pick and lands at the same time. The 08:00 from its office in Nathon rides the car ferry to Donsak and a coach to Krabi for about ฿1,110 on 12Go, or ฿1,260 with a van that collects you from your hotel at 06:15. A 12Go reviewer in May 2026 described the 08:00 leaving on time and reaching Tonsai around 15:00. Raja's ticket from its own pier at Lipa Noi leaves at 04:00 and doesn't reach Phi Phi until 17:00, so I'd only take it if everything else is sold out.

The pricier tickets buy convenience. Lomlahkkhirin's speedboat leaves Pralarn pier in Maenam at 08:30, handy if you're staying on the north coast, and reaches Tonsai at 15:30 for about ฿2,100. Faiz Travel collects from Chaweng and Bophut hotels at 09:20 and Ramon from central Chaweng at 10:00, for about ฿2,000, and both land at Tonsai between 17:00 and 18:00. Ramon's 10:00 is the last departure of the day.

Staying in Chaweng or Bophut, book a ticket with a hotel pickup. Nathon and Lipa Noi are on the far side of the island, about 40 minutes away.

Which Samui Pier Your Ticket Leaves From

Nathon, the island's main town on the west coast, is where Lomprayah's catamaran and Phantip's office are. Lipa Noi, about 8 km south of Nathon, is Raja's car-ferry pier. Pralarn pier in Maenam on the north coast is Lomlahkkhirin's. Chaweng and Bophut, where most people stay, are about 40 minutes from Nathon, so the hotel-pickup tickets are worth the extra ฿150 or so unless you're staying on the west coast already.

Check the ticket for the exact pier and check-in time, and be there at least 30 minutes before the boat. A ticket that says only Koh Samui can mean any of the three.

Flying, Then the Boat

Phuket in the morning or Krabi at midday

Phi Phi has no airport, so flying means landing in Phuket or Krabi and finishing by boat. Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying either route nonstop, and the fares reflect it, from about ฿3,700 to Phuket in October and November and ฿5,000 or more in December, with a checked bag included.

Phuket is the flexible one, with 6–8 flights a day from about 08:00. 12Go sells the 08:15 to Phuket together with the 13:30 ferry from Rassada pier, landing at Tonsai in the middle of the afternoon, for about ฿4,200–4,400. It's a self-connect ticket, so the 35 km from the airport to Rassada is yours to sort out. The big ferries from Rassada run until 15:00 and the speedboats until 15:30, so any flight landing before about 13:00 still makes it the same day. Our Phuket to Phi Phi guide has every boat from Rassada.

Krabi has one nonstop a day, leaving Samui at 12:30 in October and 12:25 from November, with a second flight added by mid-December, for about ฿4,100–5,000. Klong Jilad pier is 30 minutes from Krabi airport, and the speedboats from Krabi Town's Kong Ka pier and Krabi River Marina leave until 16:00, so you'd be on Phi Phi by early evening. The Krabi to Koh Phi Phi guide lists them.

Phuket Airport (HKT) → Rassada Pier

Landing at Phuket and going straight to Phi Phi

Rassada is about 35 km from Phuket airport. A car pre-booked on 12Go (about ฿1,000–1,150 for a sedan) gets you to the pier for a price fixed in advance, which matters when you're aiming for the 13:30 ferry.

Arriving in Phi Phi Islands

Top-Ranked Hotels in Phi Phi Islands

Breaking the Trip in Krabi or Khao Sok

If a single eight-hour day sounds like too much, split it. Krabi is already on the way, and every combo passes through it. Take a Samui to Krabi ticket one day, from about ฿500 with Phantip to ฿1,250 with Lomprayah to an Ao Nang hotel, and a boat to Phi Phi the next morning, when you have the whole day's departures to choose from, ferries from ฿450 and speedboats from Ao Nang and Railay as well as Krabi Town.

Khao Sok National Park sits almost halfway between the two coasts, and a night or two there turns the crossing into part of the trip. From Khao Sok it's about 145 km on to Krabi Town, three and a half to four and a half hours by shared van, for the Phi Phi boats. The Koh Samui to Khao Sok guide covers the first half.

Arriving on Phi Phi

฿20 at Tonsai, ฿400 for Maya Bay, and Laem Tong

Every combo ends at Tonsai pier on Phi Phi Don, the main village, where you pay a ฿20 island fee in cash as you step off. There are no cars on this part of the island, so you walk to the hotels in Tonsai and Loh Dalum. If your hotel is at Laem Tong or Long Beach, ask it about a longtail from Tonsai, because none of the combos go further.

Maya Bay, on Phi Phi Leh, is in the marine national park, and the park fee for foreign adults is ฿400. The bay closes every year from 1 August to 30 September, so if Maya Bay is the reason for the trip, check your dates first.

When to Make the Trip

The two islands have opposite rainy seasons. Samui's comes late in the year, with November its wettest month at about 445 mm of rain, while Phi Phi and the Andaman coast are wet from May to October and driest from December to April. That makes November and December the natural months to move from Samui to Phi Phi, out of the Gulf's rain and into the Andaman's best weather. From February to April both coasts are good, so the order is up to you.

From May to October the Andaman crossing from Krabi is rougher, with September and October the wettest months at about 336–350 mm on the Phuket station, and boats can be canceled on the worst days. The combos still sell all year, but in those months I'd leave a spare day before any flight out of Phuket or Krabi.

Going Back, Phi Phi to Koh Samui

The combos run the other way too, and they leave even earlier. Every one leaves Tonsai between about 08:20 and 10:30. The Phi Phi to Koh Samui guide has every departure, the cheapest tickets and the flight back from Phuket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Koh Samui to Koh Phi Phi.

No. Samui is in the Gulf of Thailand and Phi Phi is in the Andaman Sea, so every ticket is a ferry to Donsak on the mainland, a bus or van across to Krabi and a boat out to Phi Phi. Booked as one ticket it takes 7 to 9 hours.

Book a combined ferry, bus and boat ticket that leaves Samui in the morning, such as Lomprayah's 08:30 from Nathon (Tonsai at 15:30, ฿1,550) or Phantip's 08:00 (about ฿1,110). Or fly Bangkok Airways to Phuket or Krabi and take the boat from there.

Seven to nine hours on most combined tickets, and 13 on Raja's 04:00 from Lipa Noi. Flying to Phuket at 08:15 and taking the 13:30 ferry from Rassada gets you to Tonsai by mid-afternoon, six to seven hours door to door.

About ฿1,110 for Phantip's combo, about ฿1,280 for Raja, ฿1,550 for Lomprayah (฿1,700 with a Samui hotel pickup) and about ฿2,000–2,100 for the speedboat and hotel-pickup tickets. Add ฿20 in cash at Tonsai pier.

About 10:00, Ramon Transport's van from central Chaweng, landing at Tonsai at 17:00. The boats from Krabi to Phi Phi stop in the afternoon, so there's nothing later that arrives the same day.

Not directly, because Phi Phi has no airport. Fly Bangkok Airways to Phuket (6–8 a day) or Krabi (once a day) and take the ferry or speedboat from there. 12Go sells the 08:15 flight to Phuket with the 13:30 ferry for about ฿4,200–4,400.

Overland, every combo goes through Krabi, because it's the shorter crossing. Flying, Phuket has far more flights and later boats from Rassada, while Krabi has one flight a day around midday and speedboats until 16:00.

About 240 km in a straight line. Overland it's a ferry to Donsak, about 210 km of road to Krabi and roughly 40 km by sea out to Phi Phi.

Go by the weather. Samui is wettest from October to December and Phi Phi from May to October, so in November and December move from Samui to Phi Phi, and from June to September do the reverse. February to April suits both.
