How to Spend a Month in Thailand
A month in Thailand is enough for Bangkok, the north and a slow run down the Andaman coast, with four or five nights in most places instead of two. This plan has seven bases. Four nights in Bangkok, the overnight train to Chiang Mai for five, three in Pai, then a nonstop flight south to Ao Nang or Railay for four, five on Koh Lanta, three on Koh Phi Phi and three on Phuket before the flight home.
That's 28 nights, one train, one domestic flight and three boats, and it ends on Day 29 for a reason. Thailand's visa-free stamp is 30 days counting the day you land, so a trip from the 1st to the 31st of a month overstays by a day. If you want 30 nights or more, one ฿1,900 extension adds 30 days, and this route passes Chiang Mai's immigration offices in the second week. It works best from late November to mid-February, when the north is cool and clear and the Andaman Sea is calm, and below the plan there's a Gulf islands version for May to September and a swap for the smoky months.

Key Facts
Bangkok 4 → sleeper → Chiang Mai 5 → Pai 3 → Ao Nang 4 → Koh Lanta 5 → Koh Phi Phi 3 → Phuket 3
The 18:40 train north, the minivan over the mountains and back, a two-hour nonstop from Chiang Mai to Krabi, then three short boat hops down and across the Andaman Sea to Phuket's airport.
Best from late November to mid-February
The north is cool and dry and the Andaman coast is dry from December to April, clearing through November. Chiang Mai's burning season runs from mid-February to April, and the seasons section has the swaps for that and for the Andaman monsoon.
The 30-day stamp counts the day you land
Citizens of the 60 visa-exempt countries get 30 days on arrival since 15 September 2026, with arrival day as day one. Land on the 1st and you leave by the 30th. The plan flies home on Day 29.
About $1,050–2,200 as a backpacker, $2,700–5,500 mid-range
Per person for the month on the ground, before international flights. That's ฿900–1,500 a day at backpacker level and ฿2,500–4,000 mid-range, with Phi Phi and Phuket the dearest stops and Pai and Chiang Mai the cheapest.
Fewer beds, longer stays
Seven hotels in four weeks, where the 3-week route has ten. Every base gets at least one full day with no transfer, and no boat hop between the beach stops takes more than about two hours.
Your Month at a Glance
| Days | Base | Nights | Where to stay | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Bangkok | 4 | Sukhumvit or Silom, near an MRT or BTS station | Airport Rail Link (฿45, 26 minutes) or a metered taxi |
| 5 | The sleeper train | 1 | A second-class berth | 18:40 from Krung Thep Aphiwat, ฿941–1,041 |
| 6–10 | Chiang Mai | 5 | The Old City, or Nimman for cafés | Off the train at 07:15 |
| 11–13 | Pai | 3 | In town, near the walking street | Minivan, 3.5–4 hours, ฿150–220 |
| 14–17 | Ao Nang or Railay | 4 | Ao Nang for choice, Railay for the scenery | Van to Chiang Mai airport, then the 2-hour nonstop to Krabi |
| 18–22 | Koh Lanta | 5 | Long Beach (Phra Ae) | Bundhaya speedboat at 10:10, about ฿1,215 |
| 23–25 | Koh Phi Phi | 3 | Long Beach or Laem Tong | Bundhaya speedboat, ฿700, 30–40 minutes |
| 26–28 | Phuket | 3 | Kata or Karon | Ferry or speedboat to Rassada pier, then about ฿800 by taxi |
| 29 | Fly home | Phuket airport, about an hour from Kata |
Boat times are the high-season timetables. From May to mid-October the Andaman speedboats run less often, and the Lanta to Phi Phi boat drops to one a day.
The Plan, Base by Base
Each base below has what to do with its days, where to sleep and how to get to the next one. The day-by-day timings for Bangkok, the train, Chiang Mai, Pai, Railay and Phi Phi are in the 2-week and 3-week itineraries, which share those days, so this page spends its space on the parts a month changes, the extra nights and what to fill them with.
Days 1–4, Bangkok for four nights
Four nights is two more than most plans give Bangkok, and it buys the Old City without the heat crush and a day out of town. Day 1 is arrival and Chinatown's street food on Yaowarat Road. Day 2 is the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun before midday. Day 3 is Ayutthaya, about an hour north by train from Krung Thep Aphiwat for about ฿20 in third class or ฿50 on the 09:05 Bangkok Connex, then a ฿10 ferry to the island and ฿300 for the seven-temple ticket. Day 4 is Chatuchak if it's a weekend, or Jim Thompson House and a rooftop if it isn't.
I lived in Bangkok's Rama 9 and Huai Khwang area for two or three years and mostly got around on the MRT, so I'd sleep within a walk of a station. Sukhumvit around Asok or Silom puts the Old City and the railway station on one line. From the airport, take the Airport Rail Link or the metered taxi rank, and don't board the trains with your bags at rush hour. Leave extra time for evening taxis, because the traffic is the one thing you can't plan around.
Day 5, the 18:40 sleeper to Chiang Mai
Check out, leave your bags at the hotel and spend the day at a market or a museum, then take Special Express #9 from Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40. A second-class berth costs ฿941–1,041, makes up into a bed with a curtain, and replaces a hotel night. You wake to the mountains and arrive at 07:15. Tickets open 90 days ahead and lower berths sell first from November to February.
Days 6–10, Chiang Mai for five nights
Five nights lets Chiang Mai be a place you live in for a while rather than a list. Give the first morning to the Old City temples inside the moat, then Doi Suthep at its 06:00 opening before the coaches, an afternoon at an ethical elephant program, a morning cooking class that starts at the market (about ฿1,000–1,500 with pickup and lunch) and Wat Umong's forest tunnels. That still leaves a day out. Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain, is two hours each way, about ฿1,200–1,800 on a tour plus a ฿300 park fee, and the Green Bus to Chiang Rai and the White Temple takes 3h20–3h45 from ฿260, 13 times a day, which makes it a long day out.
Stay inside the Old City moat or just outside it for the temples and the Sunday Walking Street, or in Nimman for coffee, coworking and newer restaurants. A Grab or a red songthaew across town costs ฿30–50, so the wrong choice costs minutes. If you're extending your stay past 30 days, this is the week to do it, and the visa section below has the two offices.
Days 11–13, Pai for three nights
Prempracha's minivans leave Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal every hour from 06:30 for ฿150–220 at the counter and take 3.5 to 4 hours over the 762 curves of Route 1095. Arrive for the hot springs and Pai Canyon at sunset. Spend the full day by scooter, with Morpaeng Waterfall at its 08:30 opening, the ฿30 Kho Ku So bamboo bridge across the rice fields, and the White Buddha in the late light, and keep the third day for the valley at its own speed and the walking street at night.
Book the Day 14 van with the airport drop. Some van tickets end at Chiang Mai airport rather than the Arcade terminal, and an early one makes the midday or afternoon flight south.
Days 14–17, Ao Nang or Railay for four nights
Thai AirAsia flies Chiang Mai to Krabi nonstop about three times a day in two hours, from 07:55 to about 17:00, and Bangkok Airways adds three a week in the cool season. Every other airline on that route changes planes in Bangkok and turns two hours into five or more. From Krabi airport the shuttle to Ao Nang is ฿150.
Ao Nang has the most hotels and restaurants, and the island boats leave straight off its beach. Railay is the roadless peninsula of limestone towers a ฿100 longtail away. I stayed at Railay Village Resort & Spa when I visited Railay, I proposed to my wife on Phra Nang Beach in 2023, and it's still one of my favorite trips in Thailand, so if the budget stretches I'd give Railay two of the four nights. Use the days for Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach in the early morning, a speedboat to the Hong Islands, and one day with nothing booked at all.
Days 18–22, Koh Lanta for five nights
Bundhaya's speedboat leaves Nopparat Thara pier near Ao Nang at 10:10 (Railay East at 10:30) and reaches Saladan on Lanta around 11:40–12:00 for about ฿1,215, all year. From November the Ao Nang Princess ferry leaves at 10:30 for about ฿670, slower and steadier.
Lanta is the base to make the longest stay. Long Beach (Phra Ae) has the island's most reliable swimming and the best spread of restaurants, and Lanta Sand Resort & Spa, a beachfront resort with a pool there, is my pick for most first visits. Five nights covers a scooter loop down the west coast to Kantiang and the national park lighthouse at the southern tip, sunsets at Klong Khong, a Koh Rok snorkeling day (about ฿1,600–2,200, roughly November to April), and the old stilt town on the east coast. I've been to Lanta Old Town, the century-old stilt town on the east coast.
Days 23–25, Koh Phi Phi for three nights
From mid-October Bundhaya sails from Saladan to Tonsai pier at 10:00, 13:00 and 15:30 for ฿700, with a ฿20 pier fee at Tonsai in cash, in 30 to 40 minutes. Three nights on Phi Phi is one more than the day-trippers give it, and it buys the viewpoint at sunset (฿50), the early longtail that reaches Maya Bay before the day boats, Pileh Lagoon, and Long Beach once the crowds leave in the afternoon.
Sleep on Long Beach, a ฿100–150 longtail from the village, or at Laem Tong on the northern tip, not in Tonsai village, where the bars at Loh Dalum carry until 1 or 2 in the morning. Book Phi Phi two to three months ahead for December to February. The island runs 25–40% pricier than the mainland, and much of it runs on cash.
Days 26–28, Phuket for three nights, then home
The ferries leave Tonsai for Phuket from 09:00 to 15:30, about two hours from about ฿500, and the speedboats run until about 17:00 for ฿750–850 in an hour. Almost every boat lands at Rassada pier, and a taxi from there to Kata or Karon is about ฿800.
Kata and Karon have the swimmable beaches and enough evening life without Patong. Give a day to Phuket Old Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and an evening to Bangla Road in Patong if you're curious. I've been there at night, and it's chaotic and busy but fun. The last full day is the reason this plan ends on an island with an airport. On Day 29 you're about an hour's drive from the terminal with no boat to catch, and the stamp still has a day left.
The 30-Day Stamp, and How to Stay Longer
Since 15 September 2026, passport holders from 60 countries and territories, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the EU, get a 30-day visa exemption on arrival, and immigration counts the day you land as day one. The officer writes or prints your last day in your passport, so check it before you leave the booth. Land on 1 March and you must leave by 30 March. That's why a month-long plan that sleeps 30 nights doesn't fit, and why this one flies home on Day 29.
To stay longer, extend once at a Thai immigration office for ฿1,900. It adds up to 30 days, at the officer's discretion, and you must apply before the date on your stamp. The 30 days are added to the end of your current permission rather than to the day you apply, so going a week or two early costs you nothing, and visa services say walk-in offices take applications up to 30 days ahead. Bring your passport, a completed TM.7 form, one 4×6 cm photo, copies of your passport pages and the fee in cash.
On this route, extend in Chiang Mai in week two. Chiang Mai Immigration has its main office at 71 Moo 3, Airport Road, and a branch on the 2nd floor of Central Chiangmai on the Superhighway that handles tourist extensions. Chiang Mai and Bangkok are also two of the eight provinces where you can start the extension online through e-Extension, for ฿1,900 plus a ฿500 service fee with a decision in one to seven working days, and then visit the office once for the stamp. Krabi has no online option, and Phuket's Blue Tree counter, the one Phuket office on the e-Extension list, has been closed since 19 October 2026, so on the Andaman coast you'd be extending in person.
If you know before you fly that you want five or six weeks, apply for the 60-day Tourist e-Visa at thaievisa.go.th instead, about US$40, with processing of 3 to 15 business days depending on the embassy, and the same ฿1,900 extension available on top. Overstaying costs ฿500 a day up to ฿20,000, paid at the airport when you leave. A border run to reset the stamp is still possible, but land entries on the exemption are capped at two a calendar year, and officers can refuse entry to anyone with a string of runs.
A calendar month is 30 or 31 days and the stamp is 30 including arrival day. Book your flight home for Day 30 at the latest, and Day 29 if any part of the trip depends on a boat.
When to Go, and the Swap for Every Season
This route is built for late November to mid-February. The north is cool and dry, the Andaman coast is dry from December and clearing through November, and the Lanta and Phi Phi boats are on their full timetables. Christmas and New Year are the two most expensive weeks, so book those stretches first. Outside that window, keep the shape and swap one part.
Mid-February to April, trade the north for Kanchanaburi and Khao Sok
Both coasts are dry, but crop burning fills Chiang Mai and Pai with smoke, worst in March. Keep Bangkok, then give the north's nine nights to Kanchanaburi and Khao Sok. The train from Bangkok's Thon Buri station to Kanchanaburi costs ฿100 and takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, and three nights there covers the River Kwai and the waterfalls. Then go back through Bangkok and fly from Don Mueang to Surat Thani, about ฿1,000–1,650 and 1 hour 15 minutes, and take Phantip's van from the arrivals hall to Khao Sok for ฿250–300 (the last leaves around 16:15). After three nights in the rainforest or on the lake, the shared vans to Ao Nang take 3.5 to 4.5 hours for ฿300–500, and the rest of the plan runs as written, with a night added to Lanta and to Phuket.
May to September, take the north and the Gulf islands
The southwest monsoon brings rough seas to the Andaman side, while Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao have some of their best weather. Keep Bangkok (4), the sleeper and Chiang Mai (4), go to Pai (3), and come back to Chiang Mai for one more night, because Bangkok Airways' one nonstop a day to Koh Samui leaves at 11:30 and lands at 13:15. Then stay on Samui (4) in Bophut or Chaweng, take the 20–50 minute boat (฿200–500) to Koh Phangan (5) for the quiet northeast bays, and the fast boat (฿600, about an hour) to Koh Tao (5) for the diving, where an Open Water course runs about ฿11,000–12,500 over 3.5 to 4 days. Lomprayah's 10:15 boat-and-bus from Koh Tao reaches Bangkok's Khao San Road at 20:30 for ฿1,250, which leaves one night in Bangkok before the flight home on Day 29. That's 28 nights again.
September and October, the hardest month for a beach trip
The Andaman coast is at its wettest and the Gulf's rainy season is beginning, with November Samui's wettest month. If those are your dates, September still suits the Gulf version, and the rainy-season guide covers both months, when the rain mostly comes in afternoon bursts rather than all day.
What a Month in Thailand Costs
| Style | Per day | A month on the ground, per person | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backpacker | ฿900–1,500 ($27–45) | $1,050–2,200 | Guesthouse rooms at ฿500–800, street food, the second-class sleeper, the vans and the ferries |
| Mid-range | ฿2,500–4,000 ($75–119) | $2,700–5,500 | 3–4★ hotels at ฿1,500–4,000 a night, restaurant meals, the Krabi flight, speedboats and a paid day out most days |
| Luxury | ฿6,000–12,000+ ($179–358+) | $7,300–14,500+ | Resorts from ฿5,000 a night, private transfers and boats, spa days and fine dining |
The daily and monthly figures are the Thailand travel costs page's own, before international flights ($700–1,700 round-trip from the US). By stop, a budget day runs about ฿800 in Pai, ฿900 in Chiang Mai, ฿1,200 in Bangkok and ฿1,500 on Phuket and Phi Phi. Long stays in one place can come in 20–30% under these ranges on weekly or monthly room rates. Solo travelers pay roughly 15–25% more per person than couples, because rooms and taxis don't split.
Before You Book
Count your stamp before you book the flight home
Arrival day is day one of 30. Book the flight home for Day 29 or 30 at the latest, or plan the extension in Chiang Mai.
Book the sleeper berth as soon as it opens
Tickets open 90 days ahead, and lower berths on the 18:40 to Chiang Mai sell out weeks ahead from November to February.
Book the Chiang Mai–Krabi nonstop early
Thai AirAsia flies it about three times a day and Bangkok Airways three times a week. Everything else connects through Bangkok.
Book Phi Phi and the Lanta nights first in high season
Phi Phi's Long Beach and Laem Tong rooms want two to three months' notice for December to February, and the five Lanta nights are the longest stay on the plan.
Pack for a week
One carry-on-size bag survives the train rack, the vans and the speedboats. Every stop has next-day laundry at about ฿40–60 a kilo.
Never put a boat on the day of a long-haul flight
That's why the plan sleeps three nights on Phuket. If your flight home leaves Bangkok, fly up from Phuket on the same ticket or the evening before.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about 1-Month Thailand Itinerary.
Yes. A month covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pai, and one coast at four or five nights a stop, or both coasts at a backpacker's pace. It isn't too long, either. Most of the extra time goes into staying put, which is what the two- and three-week routes can't afford.
From November to mid-February, Bangkok (4 nights), the sleeper train, Chiang Mai (5), Pai (3), then a nonstop flight to Krabi for Ao Nang or Railay (4), Koh Lanta (5), Koh Phi Phi (3) and Phuket (3), flying home on Day 29. From May to September, swap the Andaman half for Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
About $1,050–2,200 per person as a backpacker, $2,700–5,500 mid-range and $7,300–14,500 or more in luxury, before international flights. That's ฿900–1,500 a day on a budget and ฿2,500–4,000 mid-range. The islands cost the most and the north the least, and staying longer in one place lowers the room rate.
About $1,200–1,700 at backpacker level or $2,800–4,200 mid-range, excluding flights. Solo travelers pay roughly 15–25% more per person than couples because rooms and taxis don't split, and solo women should add $3–8 a day for well-located rooms and Grab rides after dark.
Almost, if your passport is one of the 60 on the visa-exempt list. The exemption is 30 days counting the day you arrive, so a 1 March arrival must leave by 30 March. For 30 nights or more, extend once for ฿1,900 at an immigration office or apply for the 60-day Tourist e-Visa before you fly.
Apply at any Thai immigration office before the date on your stamp, with your passport, a TM.7 form, a 4×6 cm photo, copies and ฿1,900 in cash. You get up to 30 more days, added to the end of your current stamp, at the officer's discretion. In Bangkok, Chiang Mai and six other provinces you can start it online through e-Extension and visit once for the stamp.
Start in late November, December or January. The north is cool and clear and the Andaman coast is dry through mid-February, when the burning-season smoke starts in Chiang Mai. September and October are the hardest months for a beach trip.
Yes, at two or three nights a stop. The 3-week itinerary covers the north and both coasts in 21 days, and the backpacking route stretches the same loop, with Khao Sok between the coasts, over four. The plan on this page trades the Gulf islands for longer stays on the Andaman side.
