Four to five days is the right length for a first trip to Phuket. That's two boat days (Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay) with a land day between them, one morning for Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha and the Old Town, and a beach morning you don't have to rush. Three days means picking one boat. A week adds the Similan Islands in season and the rest day almost everyone wishes they'd taken. Below is how to decide, then a day-by-day plan for 3, 4, 5 and 7 days, all from one base in Kata so you never change hotels. Budget ฿2,200–8,000 a day depending on how you travel, before flights.

Two full-day boat trips, one culture morning and a proper beach day need five days without stacking the boats back to back. With three you choose one boat. Past a week you're on holiday rather than sightseeing, and that's the point.
The boats set the budget, Phi Phi at ฿2,500–3,000 + ฿400 park fee and Phang Nga Bay at ฿1,400–2,800 + ฿300
Speedboats pick up at 07:00–07:30 and get you to the islands an hour before the Krabi boats. Book two or three days ahead through your hotel or the operator, never a Bangla Road tout, and carry the park fees in cash for the pier.
Base in Kata for any trip up to a week
Kata sits between the boat piers, the Old Town and the southern viewpoints, with a calm swim at Kata Noi next door, so every day is under an hour each way. Patong adds 20–30 minutes to everything. Bang Tao and Surin are the luxury coast, better for the second half of a longer stay.
Best months November–April; May–October is monsoon
Green flags and calm crossings in the dry season. In the monsoon the west-coast beaches fly red flags, Phi Phi boats cancel when the swell is up, Maya Bay closes 1 August to 30 September and the Similan Islands close 16 May to 14 October. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered and runs almost every day of the year.
Airport to Kata takes 45–60 minutes, Smart Bus ฿100, taxi ฿700–800, Grab ฿750–950
The Smart Bus runs the west coast from the airport to Rawai for one ฿100 fare but takes 90–120 minutes. Around the island, Grab is ฿300–900 by distance and a scooter is ฿250–350 a day; helmets are compulsory and most travel insurance excludes motorbikes.
Budget ฿2,200–8,000 a day; five days is ฿11,000–15,500 backpacker or ฿24,000–40,000 mid-range
Per person, before flights. The two boat days and their park fees are ฿4,600–6,000 of that and everything on land is cheap. The temples, the viewpoints and the Old Town are free, museums are ฿150–200 and a market dinner is ฿150–400.

Sort the airport run before you land
The airport is on the far side of the island from Kata, 45–60 minutes away. A metered taxi from the official rank is ฿600–700 plus a ฿100 airport fee and Grab runs ฿750–950. A car pre-booked on 12Go (about ฿1,000–1,150 for a sedan) means a fixed price and a pickup time you choose, which matters most on the day you fly out.

How Many Days Do You Need in Phuket?
Phuket is 50 km top to bottom, the best things to do on it are at sea, and the two boat days that everyone comes for start at 07:00 and end at 16:30. That arithmetic decides the trip length more than anything else. One boat day needs a land day after it, because nobody wants a second 06:30 alarm and a second three hours of speedboat, and the land days are where the temples, the Old Town and the sunsets live.
So the honest ladder looks like this. It's the one I'd give a friend, and it assumes you're a first-timer who wants to see the island rather than lie on one beach for a week, which is a fine plan but a different one.
2–3 days is the stopover
Enough for one boat, the temples and the Old Town, and a sunset. You'll choose between Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay, you'll skip the museums and the spa, and you'll leave feeling you saw Phuket from a car window. That's the right call if Phuket is one stop on a two-week Thailand itinerary and Krabi or the islands come next; it's the wrong call if this is the beach holiday.
4–5 days is the first-timer sweet spot
Both boats with a land day between them, Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha in the cool of one morning, the Old Town for lunch and the Sunday walking street if the dates line up, Promthep Cape at sunset with seafood by the kilo in Rawai afterwards, and a beach morning at Kata Noi or Nai Harn that isn't rushed. Five days does it without a single 05:00 start. Four does it only if your last flight is late.
7 days or more is the holiday
The five-day plan plus the Similan Islands in season (the best snorkeling in Thailand, a 04:30 pickup, closed 16 May to 14 October), a cooking class, a second beach you haven't seen, and a day with nothing in it. Past a week, sleep somewhere else for a couple of nights, in Bang Tao or Surin for the resorts and beach clubs, Nai Harn for the quiet bay locals choose, or Koh Yao Noi in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, 30–45 minutes by boat and a decade removed.
The mistake I see most in other people's plans is two boat days back to back. The early starts, the sun and three hours of speedboat each way add up, and the second day is spent asleep on the deck. Boat, land, boat, always.

Mid-range means a 3–4★ hotel with a pool in Kata, speedboats rather than longtails, one spa visit and restaurant meals with a market night or two. Backpacker totals run at roughly half, luxury at two to three times. Excludes flights, the airport transfer and travel insurance.
3 Days in Phuket (2 Nights)
The stopover version. One base in Kata, one boat, and the island's best land day compressed into Day 3. It needs an evening flight out, or a night near the airport on Mai Khao if the flight is early.
Day 1
Arrival, Kata Noi, Karon Viewpoint and Kata Night Market
Land, get to Kata (45–60 minutes), and ask reception two things, to book tomorrow's boat and which flags the beach is flying. Then swim at Kata Noi, the calmest cove on this coast, take the 17:30 golden hour at Karon Viewpoint and eat at Kata Night Market for ฿150–400. It's the five-day plan's first day exactly.

Day 2
One boat, Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay
From November to April take Phi Phi by speedboat (฿2,500–3,000 plus the ฿400 park fee in cash) for Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don and a last swim at Khai Island, back by 16:30. Finish with a ฿350–500 street massage in Kata.

In the monsoon take Phang Nga Bay instead (longtail ฿1,400–1,800 or speedboat ฿2,200–2,800, plus ฿300) for sea canoes through the caves of Koh Panak and Koh Hong, lunch at the Koh Panyee stilt village, and James Bond Island after the crowds leave. Phang Nga is sheltered and almost never cancels.
Day 3
Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha, the Old Town and Promthep at sunset
The island's best land day in one go, temples while it's cool, the Old Town over lunch, and the far south for sunset and dinner.

Choose it at the stalls by weight, and a restaurant behind them cooks it for ฿100 a kilo.
Rawai is the far end of the island from the airport, so this day only works with a flight after 22:00. Otherwise sleep a third night and leave after breakfast.
4 Days in Phuket (3 Nights)
Four days is the five-day plan with the last morning folded away, and the only question is whether both boats fit. Days 1 to 3 are the 5 Days in Phuket itinerary exactly, and Day 4 depends on your flight.

An hour to the airport leaves time to spare for a flight after 20:00.
Flying earlier? Swap the boat for the plan's Day 5, a last swim at Nai Harn, a 90-minute massage at Sansabai (฿500–800), lunch in Kata and the 13:45 transfer. You lose Phang Nga Bay, which is the better of the two boats for scenery and the one I'd try to keep by moving the flight.

7 Days in Phuket (6 Nights)
A week is the five-day plan with two days added, and the trick is not to fill both. Days 1 to 5 run as written, with Day 5's beach-and-massage morning becoming a full slow day instead of a dash to the airport.
With seven days you can also split the base, four nights in Kata for the boat days, then two or three on Bang Tao or Surin for the resorts and beach clubs, or Nai Harn for the quiet bay, and you'll have seen two Phukets instead of one.

The best snorkeling and the whitest sand within reach of Phuket, and worth every minute of the long day. Book it for Day 6, not Day 5, so there's a land day between it and Phang Nga Bay.

Snorkeling stops and the white-sand beaches of the park's islands. The park is closed from 16 May to 14 October.
Out of season, take the boat to Koh Yao Noi for a day on the bay (30–45 minutes from Phuket, a decade removed), or the long day to Khao Sok's lake.
Day 7
A cooking class, Freedom Beach, and one Bangla Road if you must
Keep this one loose. A morning class, an afternoon on the clearest water on the Patong side, and the island's famous street once.

If you want to see it once, tonight is the night. A walk down it, a drink, and a Grab back to Kata.
Rather see elephants than a beach? Take the ethical elephant half-day in Paklok instead of Freedom Beach (฿2,900–3,500 with transfers, no riding, no shows).
Where to Stay by Trip Length
The shorter the trip, the more the beach you choose matters, because transfer time is the tax on every day. Kata is the answer for almost every plan on this page. It sits between the boat piers, the Old Town and the southern viewpoints, with a calm swim at Kata Noi and a town that runs from ฿80 noodle shops to beach clubs. Three hotels there fit these plans at three price points. Niranapa Boutique Resort, small and quiet a short walk from the beach; Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, the family flagship on the Kata Noi beachfront; and The Shore at Katathani, private-pool villas above the bay for couples.
2–3 days
Kata or Karon, nothing further. Patong only if Bangla Road is the reason you came, and even then it costs you 20–30 minutes on every day trip. Mai Khao, by the airport, makes sense for a single night before an early flight and for nothing else.
4–5 days
Kata, for all four nights. The boats pick up from your hotel, the Old Town is 30 minutes, Promthep is 20, and you'll never pack a bag mid-trip. Karon's longer, wider beach is the family alternative with the same geography.
7 days
Kata for the boat days, then move. Bang Tao and Surin are the luxury coast, with the beach clubs and the big resorts; Nai Harn in the far south is the bay Phuket residents choose; a night on Koh Yao Noi turns the last two days into a different island. Five Rules for Any Phuket Itinerary
One base. Phuket is big and its roads are slow; changing beaches mid-trip costs you half a day each time. Pick Kata (or Karon) and give every day a direction, south and out to sea, the middle of the island, north-east and back south.
Boat, land, boat. Never two boat days running. Put the first boat on Day 2 so a weather cancellation can slide it later without losing anything, and treat Phang Nga Bay as the reliable one, because it's sheltered, so when Phi Phi is called off, swap the days.
Temples in the morning. Wat Chalong at 08:30 and the Big Buddha by 10:00, because the platform has no shade after 11:00 and the dress code (shoulders and knees, no sleeveless tops) is enforced at the gate.
Sunday is the Old Town day. The walking street on Thalang Road runs Sundays only, 16:00–22:00, and it's the best evening on the island. Not a Sunday? The Sino-Portuguese streets are worth it any day, and Naka Weekend Market covers Saturday.
Promthep by 17:45. The sunset is 18:15–18:45 all year and the parking lot fills half an hour before. Rawai's seafood market is ten minutes away for afterwards, and it's the best dinner on the island for the money.

Four to five for a first visit, enough for two boat days (Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay) with a land day between them, a morning for Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha and the Old Town, and a beach morning that isn't rushed. Three days means choosing one boat and skipping the museums and the spa. Seven adds the Similan Islands in season, a cooking class and a rest day.
Enough to see the highlights, not enough to relax. One boat (Phi Phi from November to April, Phang Nga Bay in the monsoon), the two temples and the Old Town on one morning, Promthep Cape at sunset and seafood in Rawai. It works as a stopover on a longer Thailand trip; it doesn't work as the beach holiday.
Not if you use the island as a base for the sea. Five days with two boat days, a culture day and two beach mornings is the length most first-timers say felt right. Five days on one beach would be too long, and so would five days with the boats booked back to back. If you're island-hopping afterwards, cut Phuket to three or four and give the days to Krabi or Koh Lanta.
No, as long as you don't fill it. A week is the five-day plan plus the Similans in season and a day with nothing in it, and it's the first length that lets you sleep on two different beaches. Past ten days I'd add Krabi, Koh Lanta or Koh Yao Noi rather than more Phuket.
No. They leave from different piers (Chalong in the south, Ao Po in the north-east), each is a full day from a 07:00–07:30 pickup to about 16:30, and they're different seas. Phi Phi is the open Andaman with cliffs, lagoons and snorkeling, Phang Nga Bay is sheltered water with sea caves and the stilt village. Do both, on separate days, with a land day between.
Phuket for infrastructure, meaning an international airport, both boat days from one base, the Old Town, and a swimmable beach with a town behind it. Krabi for scenery and price, with Railay's cliffs, a quieter Ao Nang, cheaper rooms. With five days pick one; with a week, four nights in Phuket and three in Krabi, about 3 hours by van (฿245–650) or the 08:30 ferry from Rassada pier via Railay (฿900). They answer different questions. Phuket is beaches, boat days and seafood; Chiang Mai is temples, mountains, elephants and cooking classes, and it's the better choice in Phuket's monsoon (May to October) and the worse one in its own burning season (mid-February to April, when the air is at its worst). Most first-timers with ten days do both, Bangkok, then Chiang Mai, then Phuket, each a short flight apart.
Phuket for beaches you can swim from, island-hopping and a base with an international airport; Bali for rice terraces, temples, surfing and the wellness scene. Kata, for any plan up to a week. It's between the boat piers, the Old Town and the southern viewpoints, with the calmest swim on the west coast at Kata Noi next door. Karon is the family alternative on a longer beach. Patong only if Bangla Road is the reason you came; Bang Tao or Surin for the luxury resorts; Nai Harn or Rawai for the quiet, local south. Mai Khao is for one night before an early flight.
September is the wettest month on the Andaman coast and the one I'd avoid; August and September also close Maya Bay. May to October as a whole is the monsoon, with red flags on the west-coast beaches, some canceled Phi Phi boats, the Similan Islands shut from 16 May to 14 October. Rain comes in one- to two-hour bursts rather than all day and hotels are 30–40% cheaper, so it's still a trip, just a different one built around Phang Nga Bay and the east coast.
