Destination guide
Bangla Road, Phuket
Pick a bar, order a beer, and move on if it isn't you
Bangla Road is Patong's party street, about 400 m running inland from Patong Beach, and every evening around 18:00 it closes to traffic and fills with beer bars, clubs, live bands, go-go bars and street food. I've been there at night, and it's a little chaotic and busy but fun. It can overload your senses, with the lights, the crowd, loud music from every doorway and something happening everywhere you look.
My advice is the same one I'd give a friend. Choose a bar, grab a beer and feel out the vibe, and move on if it doesn't match your style. The bar girls are friendly and will ask you to buy them a drink, which comes with an added lady drink charge, so know that going in. It's busiest from 22:00 to 01:00, licensed venues can stay open until 04:00, and a beer in an ordinary bar is about ฿80–140. Be careful and aware, as you would anywhere, and you'll be fine.

Key Facts
Pedestrian from about 18:00
The barriers go up around 18:00 and the street is walking-only until late. It's busiest from 22:00 to 01:00, Friday and Saturday most of all.
Open until 04:00
Since December 2023, licensed venues on Bangla and in Patong's other entertainment zones can trade until 04:00. Smaller bars often close around 02:00.
Beer ฿80–140 in a standard bar
Go-go bars charge more, about ฿190 for a beer at Suzy Wong's, and a lady drink there runs about ฿290. Clubs cost more again.
Free to walk, mostly free to enter
Walking the street costs nothing, and most bars, the go-go bars and Illuzion's general floor have no entry fee. You pay in drinks.
You must be 20 to drink
Thailand's drinking age is 20, and clubs can ask for ID, so carry some. A driver's license saves taking your passport out.
Grab home, not a tuk-tuk
Grab from Patong to Kata or Karon is about ฿300–400, and a tuk-tuk asks ฿400–500 for the same ride. Walk to the Rat-U-Thit end for pickups.
What It's Like
Busy, loud and a lot. Every bar has its own sound system pointed at the street, touts hand you flyers every few steps, there are street performers, food carts and a crowd from everywhere. It's fun, but it's an overload, and it takes a few minutes to get your bearings.
The way to do it is to slow down. Pick a bar that looks your speed, sit down with a beer and watch the street go by. If the music or the crowd isn't for you, finish your drink and try the next one. There's no shortage of choice, and nothing about Bangla rewards staying somewhere you're not enjoying.
Know the difference between the bars. The open-front beer bars are the ordinary ones, with stools and cheaper beer. The go-go bars, mostly down Soi Seadragon off the middle of the street, are adult venues with dancers and hostesses, and their prices and pressure are higher. The clubs are the big rooms with DJs, and they don't really start until after 22:00.
Bangla Hour by Hour
Before 18:00 Bangla is an ordinary street with traffic, shops and cafés. From 18:00 to about 20:00 it's at its calmest, the best time to walk the length of it, eat at the night market and have a first drink while the bars are quiet. Families who want to see it do it now, and leave by 20:00.
From about 21:00 it fills, and 22:00 to 01:00 is the peak, with the crowd at its thickest and the clubs opening their doors. After 02:00 the smaller bars close and the crowd moves into the clubs, which run until 04:00.
Eight Places on and Around Bangla Worth Knowing
From our records, in roughly the order you'd use them in a night. Every price and time comes from the venue's listing or its reviews.
1. Bangla Night Market, Rat-U-Thit end of Bangla Road
Eat firstA covered bazaar and an open-air food court beside Illuzion, open 18:00 to 02:00. Pad thai, satay, grilled squid and seafood you pick from the tanks. Ask the price per kilo and agree the total out loud before it's cooked, and pay each stall in cash.
- When to go
- 18:00 to 20:00, before the tables fill.
2. New York Live Music Bar, 68 Bangla Road
A real bandThe stage is the point here, with live rock and cover bands rather than a speaker aimed at the street, at mid-range Patong prices. Open 18:30 to 04:00, but it only gets going after 21:00. Stand outside for a song before you commit.
- When to go
- After 21:00.
3. Barfunk, Bangla Road
Sports on big screensA big open bar with screens for the Premier League, UFC and F1, DJs later on, and open until 04:00. The easiest place on the street to watch a game.
4. Illuzion, Rat-U-Thit end of Bangla Road
The proper nightclubThe one real club on Bangla, a big room with serious light and sound and rotating DJs. The general floor costs nothing, so you can walk in, see if it's your speed and leave. Drinks cost more than the Bangla average, and tables with a bottle start around ฿8,000. Doors open at 21:00, nothing much happens before 22:00, and it runs to 04:00.
- When to go
- After 23:00.
5. FLYO Rooftop, Sawatdirak Road, seventh floor
Above the noiseA whitewashed rooftop above Patong, a few minutes from Bangla, quiet in the afternoon and a club by midnight. The cocktails are good value for a rooftop. Open noon to 04:00, entrance through the Beyond Patong hotel.
6. KYMA Beach Bar, Patong Beach
The beach instead of BanglaTables on the sand at the beach end, with a fire show after dark. Open 16:00 to midnight, with a ฿500 minimum spend for adults to sit on the sand. A good first drink at sunset before you walk up the street.
- When to go
- Sunset.
7. Bangla Boxing Stadium, Off Bangla Road
Muay Thai after dinnerReal Muay Thai fights, eight to ten bouts a night, several nights a week in high season, with a mix of Thai fighters and foreigners from the island's camps. Buy at the stadium's own booths, which are cheaper than agency markups, and ringside is worth it the first time.
8. Suzy Wong's A Go-Go, Soi Seadragon
If you want to see a go-go barAdults only. A small, loud go-go bar off Soi Seadragon, open 20:00 to 04:00. Beer is about ฿190 against ฿80–140 in an ordinary bar, and a lady drink is about ฿290 if someone joins you. Pay per round so the bill stays honest.
What a Night on Bangla Costs
| Item | Typical price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Beer in a standard bar | ฿80–140 | Happy hours early in the evening |
| Beer in a go-go bar | About ฿190 | Suzy Wong's; Harem's is nearer ฿100 |
| Lady drink | About ฿290 | Added to your bill when you buy a hostess a drink |
| Illuzion general floor | Free | Tables with a bottle from about ฿8,000 |
| KYMA on the sand | ฿500 minimum spend | Per adult; ฿250 for children |
| Simon Cabaret photo | About ฿100 tip | Each performer photo after the show |
| Grab to Kata or Karon | ฿300–400 | Tuk-tuks ask ฿400–500 |
| Taxi to the airport | ฿700–800 | About 50 minutes; Smart Bus ฿100 |
An easy evening of a few beers and street food is about ฿800–1,200 a person. A club night with a table, or a few rounds in a go-go bar with lady drinks, is several times that.

Lady Drinks, Scams and Staying Safe
The bar girls are friendly, and part of their job is to ask you to buy them a drink. That's a lady drink, a small drink at a much higher price, about ฿290 at Suzy Wong's, with the bar and the hostess sharing it. There's nothing wrong with saying yes, but decide before you sit down how many you'll buy, because a few rounds of them can cost more than your own drinks all night.
Watch the bill and your change. Pay per round where you can, check each tab before you pay, and carry small notes. Reviewers of some go-go bars describe the change trick, where a ฿500 note comes back as a pile of small notes and staff gesture at the ones you're meant to leave as a tip.
Walk past the ping pong show touts. Their flyers lead to upstairs rooms with steep per-person drink minimums that only appear on the bill. The same goes for tour touts on the street, so book boat trips through your hotel or the operator instead.
Keep your drink in your hand, your phone and wallet in a front pocket, and your passport in the hotel safe. Vaping is illegal in Thailand and drug penalties are severe, whatever the shops along the street suggest. If something goes wrong, the Tourist Police are on 1155. It's a well-policed street, so be as aware as you would be in any busy nightlife area and you'll be fine.
Getting There and Back
Bangla runs from Thaweewong Road, the beach road, inland to Rat-U-Thit Road by the Jungceylon mall. From most Patong hotels it's a walk. From Kata or Karon, Grab costs about ฿300–400 each way, and the tuk-tuks ask ฿400–500 for the same ride, so book the app.
Cars can't get onto the street after 18:00, so ask your Grab to drop you on Rat-U-Thit Road and walk in, and meet your ride home there too. Order it before you're tired, because late-night prices climb. Don't ride a scooter back after drinking. Checkpoints are common, and travel insurance won't cover you.
From the airport, Patong is about 50 minutes by metered taxi, ฿700–800 with the airport fee, or ฿100 on the Smart Bus, which takes 1 hour 20 minutes to an hour and a half.
If Bangla Isn't Your Style
I prefer a more relaxed night where locals go, and Bangla isn't that. For a quieter evening, the bars around Phuket Old Town are 30 minutes away, with live jazz, craft beer and cocktail bars where the crowd is half Thai, and the Sunday walking street on Thalang Road is the best evening market on the island. Kata and Karon have small bars and beach restaurants that close earlier, and the Bang Tao beach clubs do sunset with DJs and daybeds.
If you're in Patong but want the beach rather than the street, a table on the sand at KYMA at sunset, then dinner, then one walk up Bangla to see it, is a good night on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Bangla Road, Phuket.
It closes to traffic and becomes a walking street around 18:00. It's busiest from 22:00 to 01:00, smaller bars close around 02:00, and licensed venues can stay open until 04:00, a rule in force since December 2023.
Walk it between 18:00 and 20:00 to see it calmly and eat, then come back after 22:00 if you want the full night. Friday and Saturday are the busiest.
Yes, for the most part. It's busy and well policed. The risks are your wallet and your bill rather than your safety, so watch your belongings, check tabs, skip the ping pong show touts and keep your drink with you. The Tourist Police number is 1155.
About ฿80–140 in an ordinary bar, about ฿190 in a go-go bar, and more in the clubs. Happy hours early in the evening are cheaper.
When a bar hostess asks you to buy her a drink, it goes on your bill at a higher price than your own, about ฿290 at Suzy Wong's, and the bar and the hostess share it. It's optional. Decide before you sit down, because they add up fast.
Early in the evening, briefly. Families do walk it between 18:00 and 20:00, but the go-go bars, touts and crowds after that make it an adult street. Kata and Karon are the better evenings with children.
Beer bars are open-front bars with stools, cheap beer and friendly staff. Go-go bars are adult venues with dancers and hostesses, mostly on Soi Seadragon, with no entry fee but higher drink prices and lady drinks.
Mostly not. Illuzion's general floor is free, and the bars and go-go bars have no entry fee. Special event nights can charge.
Casual clothes are fine on the street, but keep your shirt on. For Illuzion and the rooftops, wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops and something smarter than beachwear.
It starts at the beach. The seaward end of Bangla meets Thaweewong Road, Patong's beach road, so the sand is a minute's walk away.
Shops and ordinary restaurants can't sell alcohol on the five Buddhist holy days, but hotels and licensed venues in designated entertainment zones are exempt under the current rules, so parts of Bangla stay open. Expect it quieter, and check on the day.
