Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket
Nestled in the jungle landscape of Kathu, this wildlife sanctuary offers an ethical alternative to conventional elephant tourism, giving rescued elephants a naturalistic retirement environment while allowing visitors to engage with them in a meaningful way. Rather than performances or rides, the experience centres on observation, feeding, and bathing alongside knowledgeable guides who provide detailed background on each elephant's history and the broader context of elephant conservation in Thailand. Small group sizes keep encounters personal and unhurried, and visitors consistently note that the elephants appear calm and well cared for. A typical visit begins with an educational briefing before any animal interaction takes place, grounding the experience in welfare awareness rather than spectacle. Guides are well-versed in elephant behaviour and history, and the jungle setting lends the experience an authenticity that more commercial operations lack. The sanctuary suits families, couples, and solo travellers, and both half-day and full-day tour options are available. Good to know: the sanctuary operates daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, so early booking through their website at elephantjunglesanctuary.com/phuket is recommended, particularly during Phuket's peak tourist season between November and April. Wear comfortable, waterproof clothing and closed-toe shoes, as the terrain can be muddy and water activities are part of the experience.

Visitor Reviews
I booked the half-day tour. It was my first time experiencing elephants up close. The elephants are very well cared for here and seemed peaceful. At the beginning, the tour itinerary was explained. Sky, who explained everything at the start, was a really friendly and humorous person. Afterwards, we were allowed to feed the elephants watermelons, then prepare food and take mud baths with the elephants, followed by bathing with them in clean water. The elephants were very peaceful and let us stroke them without any problems. I had the impression that they really enjoyed it and the staff treated the animals with great sensitivity. Afterwards, there was a cooking class on how to prepare Pad Thai. I really recommend it and it was a wonderful morning.
What a fantastic and rewarding experience! The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary provides a healthy environment for rescued elephants, in essence a retirement home for them. Our guide for the morning was Nancy, she was very knowledgeable, and obviously cares deeply for these gentle giants. We got to observe, feed, wash, make up meals and just be with the elephants. They are clearly well cared for by their assigned caretakers. There are excellent gift shops, and I would urge you to spend generously as you are supporting what is a hugely worthwhile sanctuary. Thank you Nancy for your guidance and information, we look forward to returning in the very near future.
K was INCREDIBLE! The elephants were absolutely majestic. The entire experience was magical and unforgettable. This sanctuary is exactly what you’re looking for, to be up close and connect with these beautiful mammals. We fed them, we bathed them, we rinsed them off, we made their food and then learned how to make pad Thai! The lunch they serve is delicious. K was our guide and really made the experience complete with his humor and passion for the elephants. Thank you K Love, your NY spice girls

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
