Practical guide
Thailand Visa Run
Two land entries a year, three open borders, and the ฿1,900 extension to use first
A visa run is leaving Thailand and coming straight back in to get a fresh visa exemption stamp, which since 15 September 2026 is 30 days for the 60 eligible countries. It still works, with two limits. Entries over a land border on the exemption are capped at two per calendar year, and since November 2025 immigration screens anyone who has done more than two runs, at airports as well as at land crossings, and can refuse entry.
Cambodia's land borders are closed, so the open options are Laos, Malaysia and one Myanmar crossing at Ranong. Before any of that, the ฿1,900 extension at an immigration office gets you a second 30 days without leaving.
The short answer
Yes, you can still do a visa run, but only two land-border entries a year count on the exemption, and repeat runs by air are screened too. Extend once for ฿1,900 first, then run to Laos or Malaysia.
- Stamp on re-entry
- 30 days (60 eligible countries)
- Land entries on the exemption
- 2 per calendar year (Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore exempt)
- Air entries
- No gazetted cap, but more than two runs without a reason can mean refusal
- Extension first
- ฿1,900 at an immigration office, +30 days, officer's discretion
- Open borders
- Laos, Malaysia, Ranong–Kawthaung (Myanmar); Cambodia closed
- Every re-entry needs
- A new TDAC
Key Facts
Two land entries a calendar year
The Ministry of Interior announcements in force since 15 September 2026 limit visa-exempt entries through land checkpoints to twice per calendar year. Malaysian, Bruneian, Indonesian and Singaporean passports are exempt from the count.
Flying back in is screened
The Immigration Bureau's November 2025 order tells every checkpoint, airports included, to consider refusing entry to someone who has done more than two visa runs and can't explain why. Flying out and back is not a way around the cap.
Extend before you run
One 30-day extension costs ฿1,900 at an immigration office. It's granted at the officer's discretion, and it saves one of your two land entries.
Cambodia is closed
The UK and Canadian governments both list every Thailand–Cambodia land crossing as closed or suspended. Poipet and Hat Lek are off the table, which is why Pattaya runs now go to Laos.
A new TDAC every time
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is single-use. A run is two entries, one into the neighbor and one back into Thailand, and the Thai one needs a fresh card filed within three days of arrival.
The Rules Since November 2025 and September 2026
Two changes set the rules. On 12 November 2025 the Immigration Bureau ordered four measures against visa runs. Checkpoints at airports and borders were told to screen foreigners who leave and re-enter repeatedly on the exemption, and to consider refusing entry to anyone who has done more than two runs without a reason they can explain. Provincial offices were told to refuse extensions, or cancel them, where they see a visa-run pattern. The government's public relations department summed it up as visa runs being limited to two.
Then on 15 September 2026 the 60-day exemption ended. The 60 eligible countries and territories now get 30 days, and the new announcements, published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August, cap visa-exempt entries through land checkpoints at two per calendar year, with Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore exempt. Thai authorities haven't said whether land entries made earlier in 2026 under the old 60-day scheme count toward this year's two, so don't assume the count restarted in September.
The written cap is about land. Two Royal Thai Embassy pages go further, though. London says eligible passport holders may enter on the exemption only twice within a calendar year, and Oslo says twice a year by air, land or sea. Put that next to the airport screening and I'd plan as if two runs a year, by any route, is the realistic limit.
Immigration can also look at your total time in the country. In December 2025 the head of Ranong Immigration told The Phuket News that stays on visa-free entries and tourist visas shouldn't add up to more than 150 days in a year, by land, air or sea, and that his checkpoint applies this most strictly. That is one provincial office's stated policy, not a gazetted number, but it shows how an officer reads a passport full of stamps.
No run is guaranteed. Entry on the exemption is always at the officer's discretion, and being refused at the border means finding a way back to wherever you came from.
Extend First, or Run?
Extend first. The extension costs ฿1,900, is usually granted the same day at the nearest immigration office, needs your passport, a TM.7 form, one 4×6 cm photo and the fee in cash, and adds 30 days to your stamp. In eight provinces, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Koh Samui among them, you can apply online first through e-Extension and visit only for the stamp. It uses none of your two land entries. Apply before the date on your stamp, because a day late is an overstay. Our Thailand visa extension guide walks through both routes and the offices.
Then run, if you still need more time. A run near the end of the extended stay gets you a new 30-day stamp, and that stamp can be extended once too. That's how a 60-day stay becomes 120 days with one run, and why a second run in the same year is where the screening starts to bite.
Some visa-run guides say a stamp from a land crossing can't be extended. I couldn't find that in any official text. The Royal Thai Embassy pages in Washington, London and Doha say the 30-day stay can be extended by up to 30 days at the officer's discretion, and none of them treats land entries differently. What is official is the November 2025 instruction to refuse extensions where an officer sees a visa-run pattern. So a land-entry stamp can usually be extended, but a passport showing back-to-back runs may not be.

Fares and times are from 12Go's public route pages; the Bangkok train fares are from our Bangkok to Vientiane guide. Agency ranges are what agencies and their customers publish, and they move; confirm before booking. Laos charges a visa on arrival on top (about US$30–42 depending on passport). Fares on your own exclude the Lao visa, the bridge shuttle and the Kawthaung boat.
From Bangkok and Pattaya, Go to Laos
With Cambodia shut, Bangkok's run is Laos. The cleanest way is Rapid No. 133, the one train that runs into Laos, leaving Krung Thep Aphiwat at 21:25 and reaching Khamsavath station outside Vientiane at 09:05, from ฿281 for a seat to ฿874 for a sleeper berth. Thai exit checks happen on the platform at Nong Khai. You can't do it in a day from Bangkok, so it's two nights on transport at minimum, or a night in Vientiane, which is the better trip anyway.
Lao entry needs a visa. The official Lao e-visa site lists the Friendship Bridge and Khamsavath station as e-visa ports, and the visa on arrival there is about US$30–42 in cash depending on your passport, with baht accepted at a worse rate. Bring a passport photo and US dollar notes in good condition.
From Pattaya it's the same border with a longer bus. Overnight buses leave for Nong Khai between 18:30 and 22:15 and take 10 to 15 hours for ฿800–850. Most people from Pattaya will find it easier to go up to Bangkok and use the train, or to fly out instead.

From Chiang Mai, Chiang Khong and Huay Xai
Chiang Mai's run is the Friendship Bridge IV at Chiang Khong, on the Mekong past Chiang Rai. GreenBus leaves at 08:30 and reaches Chiang Khong at 14:10 for ฿434, and the last vans back leave at 15:45 and 16:00, so on your own it's a night in Chiang Khong. The agency vans that leave before dawn and come back the same evening publish prices of about ฿2,000–5,300, and the higher ones often leave the Lao visa out. Mae Sai into Myanmar has been closed to foreigners since 2024, by local accounts.

Both ways by bus, the agency vans, the extension office and the flights out.
From Phuket, Ranong and the Boat to Kawthaung
Phuket's nearest run is Ranong, where you clear Thai exit at the pier, cross the estuary by boat to Kawthaung in Myanmar and come back. The 05:30 Rungkit Tour bus reaches Ranong at 11:00 for ฿315–520 on 12Go, and buses back leave at 13:15 and 15:45, so a long day works. Agency vans run it for about ฿2,500. Kawthaung has closed to foreign day-trippers more than once, so check the day before. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to that part of Myanmar, which can matter to your travel insurance, and the head of Ranong Immigration has said his checkpoint applies the visa-free rules most strictly.

Ranong step by step, the Satun and Hat Yai options, and the flights out.
From Koh Samui, Malaysia via Hat Yai
From Samui the run is Malaysia. The early ferry-and-bus combinations reach Hat Yai at about 15:00 for ฿570–690, and the Sadao–Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint is about 60 km further by road, so on your own it's at least one night. Agencies on the island sell a same-day run to the Satun border for about ฿4,200–4,500, though reports on the Malaysian side there conflict, and overnight Penang runs for about ฿4,500–4,800. Malaysia needs the free MDAC arrival card before you cross.
The Satun day run, Sadao on your own, Penang overnight and the Singapore flight.
From Krabi and Hua Hin
Krabi is a half day from two Malaysian crossings, and Hua Hin is far from every open border.
Krabi and Ao Nang
Krabi has two Malaysian options. Morning vans reach Hat Yai between 12:00 and 12:30 for ฿360–460, and Sadao's checkpoint is about 60 km on by road. The other is Satun, 175 km south, where vans arrive around 12:30–13:00 for ฿510–850 and a daily ferry leaves Tammalang for Langkawi at 11:30. The only return listed leaves Langkawi at 07:30, so the ferry route means a night on Langkawi.
I'd use the road to Sadao rather than the train to Padang Besar. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel on the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, and that advice can affect your insurance. Sadao district isn't on its list.
Hua Hin
Hua Hin has no easy border. Ranong is the nearest crossing at 271 km, and 12Go lists only private taxis, about five and a half hours and ฿4,485–5,200 a car. For most people in Hua Hin the better run is three hours north to Bangkok and a flight out, or the night train to Laos.
Flying Out Instead
Flying out is the other kind of run, a few days in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Vientiane and a flight back. The land cap doesn't apply to air entries, but the November 2025 screening does, so the same two-run judgment holds. A flight does make the trip look like what it is, a short holiday, which is the honest case to make at the desk.
Kuala Lumpur is the easy one from Bangkok, about a dozen nonstop flights a day of 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 20, with AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Batik Air at Don Mueang and Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways and Thai Vietjet at Suvarnabhumi. From Phuket, Singapore Airlines and Scoot fly to Singapore about eight or nine times a day. Vientiane is a 70- to 80-minute flight from Bangkok on Thai Airways, Lao Airlines or Thai AirAsia.
What to Bring on a Run
A passport with six months left
Thai entry needs six months' validity, and Laos asks for two blank pages as well. A run uses up to four stamps.
A new TDAC for the way back
File it at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days of re-entering, which you can do from the Thai side before you cross. It's free.
US dollars and a photo for Laos
The Lao visa on arrival is about US$30–42 in cash depending on your passport, paid most simply in clean US dollar notes, with a passport photo. The e-visa works at both Friendship Bridges and takes about three working days.
The MDAC for Malaysia
Malaysia's free digital arrival card goes in online within three days before you arrive, at imigresen-online.imi.gov.my. UK passports, for one, then get 90 days visa-free.
An onward ticket out of Thailand
On the exemption the officer can ask to see travel out of Thailand within 30 days. A cheap flight or bus ticket out is worth having on your phone.
Proof of funds the officer may ask for
TAT lists ฿10,000 per person or ฿20,000 per family for certain visa-exempt entries, while the Royal Thai Embassy pages give ฿20,000 per person or ฿40,000 per family for the exemption. Carry the cash or bank statements, and don't count on a card or app balance being accepted.
When a Visa Run Is the Wrong Tool
A run is for a long trip that ran a few weeks over. If you want to spend most of the year in Thailand, it's the wrong tool, and immigration now says so at the desk. Remote workers and long-stay travelers fit the Destination Thailand Visa, 180 days per entry for five years. Six months of travel fits the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa or a 60-day Tourist e-Visa applied for before you arrive. Study, Muay Thai or language school fits an education visa, and over-50s or anyone with Thai family fits a Non-Immigrant O. Our visa guide compares them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Thailand Visa Run.
Yes. Leaving and coming back in still gets you a new 30-day exemption stamp if you're from one of the 60 eligible countries. Land entries on the exemption are capped at two per calendar year, and since November 2025 immigration can refuse entry, at airports too, to anyone who has done more than two runs without a reason they can explain.
Two over land on the visa exemption, per the rules in force since 15 September 2026, unless you hold a Malaysian, Bruneian, Indonesian or Singaporean passport. Flying back in has no written cap, but the Immigration Bureau screens anyone past two runs, and the London and Oslo embassies describe the limit as twice a year by any route. Plan on two.
Yes, and the two-a-year land cap doesn't apply to it. But immigration checks repeat runs at airports as well, and the Bureau says it refused about 2,900 people with that pattern at airports from the start of 2025. A few days in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore with a return flight is the usual version.
On your own from Phuket, Ranong and back by bus is about ฿550 in fares plus the boat to Kawthaung, and from Chiang Mai the bus to Chiang Khong is ฿434 each way plus the Lao visa of about US$30–42. Cheaper still is the ฿1,900 extension, which buys 30 days without leaving.
From Phuket to Ranong, yes, on the 05:30 bus and a mid-afternoon bus back. From Chiang Mai with an agency van that leaves before dawn; the public bus and the last van back leave about 90 minutes at the border, too tight to count on. From Koh Samui only with an agency van to the Satun border. From Bangkok and Pattaya, and from the islands on public transport, plan on at least one night.
No. Every Thailand–Cambodia land crossing is closed, according to the UK and Canadian governments' advice. Flying to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap is the only way to Cambodia.
Cross at the Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai, by the direct No. 133 night train from Bangkok or the shuttle bus over the bridge, or at Chiang Khong from the north. Get a Lao e-visa ahead or pay the visa on arrival, about US$30–42 in cash, with a passport photo. File a new TDAC before you come back.
From the south, cross at Sadao, about 60 km from Hat Yai by road, or take the Satun ferry to Langkawi and stay a night. File Malaysia's free MDAC within three days before you arrive and a new Thai TDAC before you come back. UK passports, for one, get 90 days in Malaysia without a visa.
Laos, at the Friendship Bridge between Nong Khai and Vientiane, since the Cambodian crossings closed. The night train takes about 12 hours, so it's at least two nights. Flying to Kuala Lumpur, 2 hours 15 each way, is often easier.
Usually. The Royal Thai Embassy pages say the 30-day stay can be extended by up to 30 days at the officer's discretion and draw no line between land and air entries. Some guides say land stamps can't be extended, but I found no official text that says so. Offices can refuse where they see a pattern of visa runs.
Yes. The card covers one entry, so coming back into Thailand needs a new one filed within three days of arrival. It's free at tdac.immigration.go.th.
