Chiang Mai to Koh Samui

One nonstop a day, or a cheaper flight to the mainland and the boat across

By Mac Kiley · 7 min read · Updated Oct 30, 2026

Bangkok Airways flies Chiang Mai to Koh Samui nonstop once a day. The flight leaves at 11:30 and lands at 13:15, and from late March it moves five minutes later. It's the fastest way by hours, and the one I'd book when the fare is reasonable, but for November to March dates 12Go was showing about ฿10,000 one way. The cheaper route is Thai AirAsia's 08:10 from Chiang Mai to Surat Thani, which lands at 10:00, in time for the bus-and-catamaran tickets sold in the arrivals hall.

Boonsiri's 11:30 and Lomprayah's 12:30 put you at Nathon pier on Samui at 14:15 and 15:45 for ฿850. That flight ran about ฿3,800–6,400 on the same dates, so the boat saves you several thousand baht for two or three extra hours. There's no direct train or bus. Overland it's the day train to Bangkok and the sleeper to Surat Thani, about 28 hours.

Key Facts

One nonstop a day, 11:30 to 13:15

Bangkok Airways flight PG242 takes 1 hour 45. It's the only nonstop, the fare includes a checked bag, and from late March it runs 11:35 to 13:20.

The nonstop was about ฿10,000 for November to March

12Go showed the same ฿10,049 for dates in November, December, January and March, and about ฿6,800 for a May date. One-stop Bangkok Airways flights via Suvarnabhumi were often cheaper, about ฿8,100–9,300.

The cheaper route is via Surat Thani

Thai AirAsia flies Chiang Mai to Surat Thani nonstop at 08:10, landing at 10:00, with a 17:30 on some days. The airport bus-and-boat tickets reach Samui by 14:15 to 15:45 for about ฿550–850.

By train it's about 28 hours

Day train No. 8 leaves Chiang Mai at 07:30 and reaches Bangkok at 17:40, the 19:50 sleeper reaches Surat Thani at 06:23, and a bus and ferry puts you on Samui around midday.

About 1,030 km as the plane flies

By road it's about 1,390 km to the ferry at Donsak, roughly 17 hours of driving before the 1 hour 30 crossing, so nobody drives it in one go.

The two seasons fit together

Chiang Mai is at its best from November to early February, when Samui has its wettest weeks, and Samui is dry from February to April, when Chiang Mai has its burning-season haze.

The Nonstop Flight on Bangkok Airways

One a day, 1 hour 45, and why it costs what it does

Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying Chiang Mai to Samui without a stop, and it flies the route once a day. PG242 leaves Chiang Mai at 11:30 and lands on Samui at 13:15, every day through the winter schedule, and from the end of March it shifts to 11:35, landing at 13:20. That's a relaxed start, out of a Chiang Mai hotel by about 09:30 and on the beach by mid-afternoon. Thai Airways sells seats on the same flight under its own number, so don't mistake it for a second departure.

The airline also owns Samui's airport, which is why the island's fares sit well above the rest of the country's domestic flights. For dates in November, December, January and March, 12Go showed this flight at ฿10,049 one way every time, and for a date in May about ฿6,800. A 20 kg checked bag is included, which narrows the gap a little against a budget fare plus baggage. If the nonstop is sold out or too dear, check the one-stop flights in the next section before giving up on flying all the way.

Fly to Surat Thani and Take the Boat

Thai AirAsia's 08:10, then one ticket from the arrivals hall to Nathon

This is the route the Reddit threads and travel-hack videos mean when they say you can reach Samui for far less. Thai AirAsia flies Chiang Mai to Surat Thani nonstop at 08:10, landing at 10:00 after 1 hour 50, every day on the dates I checked, plus a 17:30 on some days. 12Go showed about ฿3,800–6,400 for a November date and about ฿4,400–5,400 for December and February dates. Most other Chiang Mai to Surat Thani flights you'll see change in Bangkok, so look for the 1 hour 50 nonstop.

The combined bus-and-boat counters are in the Surat Thani arrivals hall. From the 10:00 landing, Boonsiri's 11:30 van and catamaran reaches Nathon pier on Samui at 14:15 and Lomprayah's 12:30 coach and catamaran reaches Nathon at 15:45, each ฿850, or ฿1,000 with a drop at your hotel. Phantip's coaches with the Seatran ferry run until mid-afternoon for less. That's about seven and a half hours from takeoff to the pier, against the nonstop's two. The 17:30 flight lands too late for the boats, so it means a night in Surat Thani. Our Surat Thani to Koh Samui guide has every departure from the airport.

If the nonstop is near ฿10,000 and you don't mind a longer day, the 08:10 to Surat Thani and Boonsiri's 11:30 boat ticket is the pick.

One-Stop Flights via Bangkok

Bangkok Airways also sells Chiang Mai to Samui with a change at Suvarnabhumi, on one ticket with your bag checked through. On 12Go the useful ones left Chiang Mai at 10:10 or 12:10 and reached Samui between about 15:00 and 17:00, 4 to 5 hours in all, for about ฿8,100–9,300 on the November to January dates, a little below the nonstop. Avoid the overnight connections the booking sites also list, which leave Chiang Mai in the evening and land the next morning.

You can also build it yourself, a low-cost flight to Don Mueang and one of Bangkok Airways' three daily Don Mueang to Samui flights, but on separate tickets a delay leaves you on your own, so I'd only do it with three or four hours between flights.

Chiang Mai to Koh Samui by Train

The day train to Bangkok, the sleeper south, and a boat

There's no train to Samui, and none from Chiang Mai to the south, so you change at Krung Thep Aphiwat in Bangkok, where both lines meet. The quickest pairing starts with the day train. Special Express No. 8 leaves Chiang Mai at 07:30 and reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat at 17:40 (2nd-class air-con seat ฿558). Express No. 85 leaves the same station at 19:50 and reaches Surat Thani's station at Phun Phin at 06:23 (2nd-class air-con berth about ฿755 upper, ฿825 lower). On the forecourt, Raja's and Phantip's bus-and-ferry tickets reach Samui by about 11:30 to 12:30 for ฿520–558. That's about 28 hours and about ฿1,850–2,000 at station prices, and 12Go sells the whole thing as one ticket for ฿3,023.

The two hours at Krung Thep Aphiwat are enough on most days, but northern-line trains do run late, so if you'd rather not gamble, take a sleeper out of Chiang Mai instead. No. 14 (17:05, arriving 05:55) or No. 10 (18:20, arriving 06:30) gives you a day in Bangkok before the 19:50 south, and you reach Samui around midday two days after you left. Sales on these trains open 90 days ahead on the State Railway's tiers, and lower berths on No. 85 go first from December to February.

Is There a Bus From Chiang Mai to Koh Samui?

No through bus. A bus means Chiang Mai to Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal overnight, a cross-town ride to the Southern Terminal or Khao San Road, and a second night on a bus-and-boat ticket south, about two days in all. The train above is the same time with a bed.

Koh Samui to Chiang Mai

Going back, the nonstop leaves Samui at 08:50 and lands in Chiang Mai at 10:40, and it was much cheaper in that direction on the dates I checked, so the Surat Thani route rarely pays. Our Koh Samui to Chiang Mai guide has the flight, the evening AirAsia from Surat Thani and the train north.
