Chiang Mai to Krabi

Mountains to limestone sea cliffs in two hours, if you book the nonstop.

By Mac Kiley · 7 min read · Updated Oct 30, 2026

Chiang Mai to Krabi is about 1,190 km in a straight line and roughly 1,450 km by road, so I'd fly it, and I'd fly the nonstop. Thai AirAsia flies Chiang Mai (CNX) to Krabi (KBV) about three times a day in 2 hours, with the first at 07:55 and the last around 17:00, and Bangkok Airways adds an early-afternoon flight three days a week in the cool season. Those are the only two airlines that fly it without a stop.

Every other airline listed for the route, Thai Airways, Thai VietJet, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air included, changes planes in Bangkok and turns two hours into five or more. Overland there is no direct train or bus, so it's the night train to Bangkok, a day in the city and the night bus south, two nights and about 35 hours.

Key Facts

The nonstop takes 2 hours, on Thai AirAsia or Bangkok Airways

Thai AirAsia flies FD3072 at 07:55, FD3076 around 12:55 and FD3074 late in the afternoon, between 16:30 and 17:05 depending on the date. Bangkok Airways' PG246 runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in the winter schedule.

Thai Airways, VietJet, Lion and Nok all change in Bangkok

Booking sites list them on the route, and some label the result "direct" when it's one ticket. Read the stops before you pay. A change at Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi adds three hours at the least.

Krabi airport is 12 km from Krabi Town and about 40 minutes from Ao Nang

The airport shuttle is ฿150 to Ao Nang and about ฿90–100 to Krabi Town, shared vans are ฿150–200 with a hotel drop, and Railay is a ฿100 longtail from Ao Nang beach.

There's no train to Krabi

The overland trip is the No. 10 sleeper from Chiang Mai to Bangkok (18:20 to 06:30), a day in Bangkok, then Lignite Tour's 18:40 night bus from the Southern Terminal, into Krabi at 05:40. About 35 hours and ฿1,700–1,800 in second class.

Book the nonstop first in December and January

With three AirAsia flights a day there are only about 540 nonstop seats, and they go first in peak season. Lock the flight before the hotels, then plan the days around its time.

The Nonstop Flight, About Three a Day on Thai AirAsia

Which flight to book, and the Bangkok Airways days

Thai AirAsia is the airline that flies Chiang Mai to Krabi every day. Its schedule has three flights, an A320 on each. FD3072 leaves at 07:55 and lands at 09:55, FD3076 leaves around 12:55 and lands around 14:40, and FD3074 leaves late in the afternoon, at 16:30 on some dates and 17:05 on others, landing about two hours later. The midday flight is the one most likely to be dropped on a given day, so check the date you want before planning around it. Fares change daily, and booking sites add a fee, so I'd compare the price on AirAsia's own site against any reseller.

Bangkok Airways flies PG246 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in the cool-season schedule, leaving Chiang Mai in the early afternoon. When it last relaunched the route it left at 14:35 and landed at 16:30, on an Airbus. It flies one way only. There is no Bangkok Airways flight from Krabi back to Chiang Mai, so a return on that airline goes through Suvarnabhumi.

The flight I'd book is the 07:55. You're in Krabi by 10:00, at an Ao Nang hotel before lunch, and on a Railay longtail in the afternoon. The late flight lands around 19:00, which still works for Ao Nang and even for Koh Lanta, since the last airport van to Lanta leaves at 20:30. Railay is the one place I wouldn't aim for on the late flight, because the longtails from Ao Nang beach stop around 18:00.

Thai AirAsia times from flight.info's schedule and 12Go's live search for 18 November 2026, which showed FD3072 and FD3074 (17:05 to 19:05). Bangkok Airways' times are from its November 2024 relaunch (TTR Weekly); the airline's own schedule is the final word. Schedules change with each season, so read the ticket.

When the Nonstops Are Full, via Bangkok or Phuket

Change in Bangkok. Flights from Chiang Mai to Don Mueang take 65 to 85 minutes and Don Mueang to Krabi about 1 hour 25, with Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air on both legs. Thai Airways and Thai VietJet do the same through Suvarnabhumi. Buy both legs on one ticket so a late first flight is the airline's problem, and allow at least five hours in total. Don't book two separate budget tickets with a short gap, because a missed connection on separate tickets means paying for a new flight.

Or fly to Phuket. Chiang Mai also has nonstops to Phuket, and from Phuket airport shared vans leave for Ao Nang and Krabi Town hotels at 08:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 17:00 for about ฿750, roughly three hours with the drop-offs. A private car is about ฿2,500–3,800 and two and a half hours. That's a long afternoon, so it makes sense only if the Krabi flights are sold out or you planned a few days on Phuket first. Our Phuket to Krabi guide has the speedboats and vans in detail.

From Krabi Airport to Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Railay and Koh Lanta

The ride after the flight, priced

Krabi airport sits 12 km northeast of Krabi Town and about 40 minutes from Ao Nang. The airport shuttle bus meets most flights and costs ฿150 to Ao Nang and about ฿90–100 to Krabi Town, though with its stops it can take an hour or more to the beach. Shared vans are ฿150–200 a person with a drop at your hotel. Grab runs about ฿600–900, and a car booked ahead is about ฿700–800 to Ao Nang. The taxi counter in the arrivals hall quotes more for the same road, so I'd skip it unless you're three or four with bags.

For Railay, go to Ao Nang beach and take a longtail, ฿100 each way and 10 to 15 minutes. Boats leave when about eight people have gathered, roughly 08:00 to 18:00. For Koh Lanta, minivans leave from the airport itself until 20:30, about ฿400–540 and 2 to 2.5 hours to your Lanta hotel, including the short car ferry. Our Krabi to Koh Lanta guide has every van and boat.

Chiang Mai to Krabi Overland, Two Nights by Train and Bus

No train or bus runs from Chiang Mai to Krabi, and Krabi has no railway at all, so overland means going through Bangkok. The plan I'd follow takes the Special Express No. 10 from Chiang Mai station at 18:20, into Krung Thep Aphiwat at 06:30, at ฿941 for an upper second-class berth or ฿1,041 for a lower. Spend the day in Bangkok, then take Lignite Tour's 18:40 night bus from the Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai, on the Thonburi side, 30 to 45 minutes across the city) for ฿715. It reaches Krabi's bus terminal at Talat Kao at 05:40, 4–5 km north of Krabi Town, in time for the morning boats to Phi Phi and Railay.

That's about 35 hours and about ฿1,700–1,800 in fares, two nights spent sleeping on wheels. The cheaper sleeper, No. 14 (17:05 to 05:55, ฿771–841), takes about ฿170 off. You can swap the bus for a second sleeper, No. 85 from Krung Thep Aphiwat to Surat Thani (19:50 to 06:23) and a connecting bus to Krabi, which arrives around mid-morning instead of dawn. I'd only go overland if a day in Bangkok is part of the plan. Otherwise the flight saves a day and a half for a fare in the same range.

My rule is to book the 07:55 Thai AirAsia nonstop as soon as the dates are firm. If it's gone, take the late flight. Only if both are full would I fly through Bangkok, and only on one ticket.

Coming Back, Krabi to Chiang Mai

Thai AirAsia flies back the same three times a day, with FD3073 at 10:25 and FD3077 at 15:25 among them, each about 1 hour 55 minutes. Bangkok Airways doesn't fly north on this route, so its passengers return through Suvarnabhumi. Our Krabi to Chiang Mai guide has the full return timetable, the ride to Krabi airport from Ao Nang, Railay and Koh Lanta, and the through bus north.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Chiang Mai to Krabi.

Yes. Thai AirAsia flies nonstop about three times a day, at 07:55, around 12:55 and late afternoon (16:30 to 17:05 depending on the date), in 2 hours. Bangkok Airways adds PG246 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in the cool season. Thai Airways, Thai VietJet, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air also sell the route, but with a change in Bangkok.

About 2 hours nonstop, scheduled at 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours. With a change in Bangkok it takes five hours or more door to door at the airports.

The Thai AirAsia nonstop. The 07:55 gets you to Ao Nang before lunch, and the late-afternoon flight still connects to the last van to Koh Lanta at 20:30. If both are full, fly via Bangkok on one ticket, or fly to Phuket and take a three-hour van.

No. Krabi has no railway. The nearest you can get is the sleeper from Chiang Mai to Bangkok (No. 10, 18:20 to 06:30), then either Lignite Tour's 18:40 night bus to Krabi (arriving 05:40) or a second sleeper to Surat Thani and a bus. That's about 35 hours with a day in Bangkok.

Not a direct one. You'd ride the sleeper train or an overnight bus to Bangkok, then a night bus from Bangkok's Southern Terminal to Krabi, two nights in a row. Lignite Tour's 18:40 is ฿715 and arrives at 05:40.

About 1,190 km in a straight line, the distance the plane flies, and roughly 1,450 km by road, about 19.5 hours of driving without stops.

Krabi, if you're staying in Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi Town or Koh Lanta. Krabi airport is 40 minutes from Ao Nang, while Phuket's airport is about three hours from Krabi by van. Fly to Phuket only if you're spending the first days on Phuket's beaches.

Take the airport shuttle (฿150) or a shared van (฿150–200) to Ao Nang, then a longtail from Ao Nang beach to Railay, ฿100 and 10 to 15 minutes. The boats run roughly 08:00 to 18:00, so the 07:55 flight from Chiang Mai is the one that makes Railay easy.
