About Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is where Thailand's WWII history meets untouched jungle. The Bridge over the River Kwai and the Hellfire Pass memorial draw visitors for the somber history of the Death Railway, built by Allied POWs and forced laborers during the Japanese occupation. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre in town is one of the best small museums in Southeast Asia — thorough, dignified, and deeply moving.
Beyond the war history, Kanchanaburi province stretches west toward the Myanmar border through increasingly wild terrain. Erawan National Park's seven-tiered waterfall is one of Thailand's most beautiful, with turquoise pools you can swim in at each level. Further out, Sai Yok National Park offers floating raft house stays on the River Kwai, and the Hellfire Pass walking trail follows the original railway cutting through limestone cliffs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kanchanaburi
Can you do Kanchanaburi as a day trip from Bangkok?
You can, but it's a long day. The drive is 2.5 hours each way, which leaves time for the bridge, the museum, and either Erawan Falls or Hellfire Pass — not both. An overnight stay is much better, especially if you want to swim at Erawan (allow 3–4 hours for the full hike) or experience a floating raft house.
How long does it take to hike Erawan Falls?
The trail from the park entrance to the seventh tier takes about 1.5–2 hours one way, with swimming stops at each level. Most visitors make it to tier 3 or 4. The upper tiers (5–7) are steeper and less crowded. Bring water shoes — the rocks are slippery. The park closes at 4:30pm; start by noon.
Is the Death Railway still running?
A section of the original line runs from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok station, passing over the Wampo Viaduct — a wooden trestle clinging to a cliff face. The train ride takes about 2 hours and costs ฿100. It's one of Thailand's most scenic railway journeys and a moving way to understand the railway's scale.
What are the floating raft houses like?
They range from basic wooden platforms with mattresses (฿500–800/night) to comfortable resort-style rooms with en-suite bathrooms and electricity (฿2,000–4,000). Most are in the Sai Yok area, about 1.5 hours northwest of town. Expect no wifi and limited phone signal — that's the point.
