Phuket vs Pattaya: which is better for your trip?
Phuket, unless you're short on time or money: it has the better beaches, the boat trips and the island feel. Pattaya's case is being 90 minutes from Bangkok's airport with a beach, nightlife and a family-friendly stretch at Jomtien.

- Beach quality matters: Kata, Karon, Freedom Beach, the Similans
- You want Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi day trips
- It's a proper holiday, not a stopover
Pick Pattaya if…
- You have a couple of days spare at the end of a Bangkok trip
- You want beach access without a flight, and Koh Larn's water is enough
- Nightlife is the point, or you're staying long-term in Jomtien or Bang Saray
Why I'd choose that way
Pattaya's reputation precedes it, and it has been reinventing itself: a 15 km beachfront promenade, the Sanctuary of Truth, Michelin-recommended restaurants, and a calmer south at Jomtien, Na Jomtien and Bang Saray. Koh Larn, 45 minutes by ferry, has the clear water Pattaya Beach itself lacks. Its trump card is being about 90 minutes from Suvarnabhumi.
Phuket is the real beach destination of the two: 36 beaches, Old Town, the Big Buddha, and the best boat-trip menu in Thailand. It's also more expensive (about ฿1,500 a day on a budget against Pattaya's ฿1,100) and needs a flight.
The weather runs roughly parallel: both are rainy from May or June to October, with Phuket's seas rougher in June to September. December and January are peak for both.

Pattaya slots into a Bangkok stay; Phuket is a flight from either. Do Pattaya as a two-night beach break from the capital and Phuket as its own week.

Is Pattaya cheaper than Phuket?
Yes: about ฿1,100 a day on a budget against ฿1,500, and ฿2,800 against ฿4,000 mid-range, plus no flight.
Does Pattaya have good beaches?
Pattaya Beach itself is average. Jomtien is calmer and 6 km long, and Koh Larn, 45 minutes by ferry, has the turquoise water people expect. Phuket's beaches are better across the board.
Which is better for families?
Phuket, at Kata, Karon or Bang Tao. Pattaya can work at Jomtien or Bang Saray, and Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the Sanctuary of Truth are good with kids, but central Pattaya is not.
How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?
About 90 minutes from Suvarnabhumi Airport by minibus, or two hours by bus from Ekkamai (฿148, hourly). There is no fast train.
