Two Andaman neighbors and a Gulf island · the month decides first
Phuket vs Krabi vs Koh Samui, and which one to pick
Pick by month first. From November to March it's Phuket or Krabi, Phuket for choice, nightlife and flights, Krabi for the limestone scenery and a cheaper, quieter base. From April to September it's Koh Samui, which stays fairly dry while the Andaman side gets the monsoon. October is wet on all three.

Phuket
KrabiPick Phuket if…
- It's your first beach trip in Thailand and you want everything in one place
- Nightlife, direct international flights and the widest choice of hotels matter
- You're traveling November to March with kids, and want Kata, Karon or Bang Tao
Pick Krabi if…
- Railay's cliffs, the Four Islands and the Hong lagoon are the pictures you came for
- You'd rather climb, kayak and boat-hop than sit by a pool
- Budget matters, since it's the cheapest of the three on any budget
Pick Koh Samui if…
- Your dates are April to September, when the Gulf is drier than the Andaman
- You want a resort-and-spa week on a calmer, greener island
- Koh Phangan or Koh Tao are on the plan; both are a ferry away
Which one for which traveler
- First trip to ThailandPhuket
- Phuket. It has the most of everything, 36 beaches, the biggest boat-trip menu and direct international flights, so a first trip can skip Bangkok if it wants to.
- Traveling May to SeptemberKoh Samui
- Koh Samui. It gets about 100–135 mm of rain a month from May to September, while Phuket and Krabi get about 240 mm or more and their boat trips get canceled.
- Traveling November or DecemberPhuket or Krabi
- Phuket or Krabi. December is the start of the Andaman peak season (about 80 mm of rain), while November is Samui's wettest month at about 445 mm and December is still wet there.
- FamiliesPhuket or Koh Samui
- Phuket from November to March, at Kata, Karon or Bang Tao. Samui from April to September, on the calm north-coast beaches at Choeng Mon, Bophut and Maenam.
- Couples and honeymoonsKrabi or Koh Samui
- Krabi if the romance is the landscape, with Railay's sunsets and longtails to beaches with no road. Samui if it's a boutique or villa resort with a spa.
- NightlifePhuket
- Phuket, with Bangla Road in Patong. Samui is second, with Chaweng's beach clubs and the Full Moon Party a short ferry away on Koh Phangan.
- BudgetKrabi
- Krabi, at about ฿1,300 a day on a budget against ฿1,500 in Phuket and ฿1,600 on Samui. Samui's flights widen the gap.
- Scenery and adventureKrabi
- Krabi. The karst towers, 700-plus climbing routes on Railay and the Four Islands and Hong lagoon day trips are what the other two only visit.
Why I'd choose that way
The first thing to know is that two of these share a coast and one doesn't. Phuket and Krabi face each other across Phang Nga Bay on the Andaman Sea, with the same November to April dry season and the same May to October monsoon. Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand on the other side of the peninsula, and its weather runs the other way, fairly dry through the summer and wet from October to December. So your dates usually narrow it to two before anything else does.
Then it's about the trip. Phuket is the full-service island, with 36 beaches, an Old Town of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, the biggest nightlife in the south and the most flights. Krabi is a mainland province rather than an island, and it's defined by limestone, from Railay's boat-only beaches to the Four Islands, with Ao Nang as the easy base. Samui is the island that does comfort well, smaller and greener than Phuket, with Chaweng for the buzz, Bophut's Fisherman's Village for boutique hotels and a jungle interior.
Cost runs the same order every way I slice it. Krabi is the cheapest of the three, Phuket sits in the middle, and Samui is the most expensive, partly because Bangkok Airways is the only airline on the Bangkok to Samui route. None of the gaps are big on the ground; the flight to Samui is where the money goes.

Phuket vs Krabi vs Koh Samui, category by category
Weather
Depends on your monthThis decides more trips than anything else. Phuket and Krabi share one coast and one calendar, driest from December to March (about 25–80 mm of rain a month) and wettest from May to October, peaking at about 350 mm in September. Samui runs the other way. From April to September it gets about 80–135 mm a month against the Andaman side's 135–350, and its wet season is October to December, with November the wettest month on any of the three at about 445 mm. From January to March all three are dry, and October is wet on all three.
Beaches
Phuket or KrabiPhuket and Krabi split it. Phuket has the most, 36 of them, and its best (Kata Noi, Nai Harn, boat-access Freedom Beach) beat Samui's for water clarity. Krabi has the most dramatic, Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach under the cliffs with no road in. Samui's strength is calm water, and the clearest water near it is a boat trip away.
Scenery
Krabi winsKrabi, clearly. The karst towers rise straight out of the sea, Railay has 700-plus climbing routes, and the inland day adds the Emerald Pool, the hot springs and Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260 steps. Phuket's best scenery is the same limestone, seen on a Phang Nga Bay day trip. Samui is green rather than dramatic, with coconut groves and the Na Muang waterfalls.
Day trips by boat
Krabi winsKrabi has the edge, because Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, the Four Islands and Hong Island are all close, with ferries to Phi Phi from ฿450. Phuket has the one trip neither of the others can match, the Similan Islands from mid-October to mid-May, plus Phang Nga Bay. Samui's big day is Ang Thong Marine Park's 42 islands, and it's the better start if you'd rather hop on to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao than come back to one base.
Nightlife
Phuket winsPhuket by a distance, with Bangla Road in Patong and beach clubs up the west coast. Samui is second, with Chaweng's beach clubs and bars and Koh Phangan's Full Moon Party a 30-minute ferry away. Krabi's nights are a row of bars in Ao Nang, a few on Railay and the weekend market in town.
Food
Phuket winsPhuket, for range. It has more restaurants than either of the others, the Old Town's Sunday walking street and Rawai's seafood market. Samui's food scene centers on Bophut's waterfront and the Friday Walking Street at Fisherman's Village. Krabi is simpler, with Ao Nang's beachfront restaurants and Krabi Town's weekend night market.
Cost
Krabi winsKrabi is the cheapest, about ฿1,300 a day on a budget and ฿3,500 mid-range, against ฿1,500 and ฿4,000 in Phuket and ฿1,600 and ฿4,500 on Samui. A mid-range room runs about ฿2,500 a night in Krabi, ฿3,000 in Phuket and ฿3,500 on Samui. Railay is Krabi's exception, since everything on a boat-only beach arrives by boat.
Families
Phuket or Koh SamuiPhuket or Samui, and the month you can travel decides which. In Phuket pick Kata, Karon or Bang Tao rather than Patong. On Samui, Choeng Mon, Bophut and Maenam have calm, shallow water in the fair-weather months, and there are water parks and villas with pools and kitchens. Krabi works for families who came for the boat days, but those depend on calm seas.
Couples
Krabi or Koh SamuiKrabi or Samui, for different kinds of romance. Krabi's is the landscape, with Railay's sunsets and Rayavadee's pavilions under the Phra Nang headland. Samui's is the resort, with boutique and villa hotels, Bophut's waterfront dinners and spas such as Kamalaya and Six Senses. Phuket suits a honeymoon that's also an active vacation.
Getting there
Phuket winsPhuket. Its airport has the most direct international flights of the three, from all over Asia. Krabi's airport is a 1.5-hour flight from Bangkok and about 40 minutes from Ao Nang. Samui's airport is the most expensive to fly into, since Bangkok Airways is the only airline on the Bangkok route at about ฿2,800–6,800 one way, and the cheaper way in is a flight to Surat Thani and a ferry of about 1.5 hours.
Narrowed it to two?
Each pair has its own page with the full argument, month by month.
Doing two or all three
Phuket and Krabi pair easily, one boat ride apart on the same coast and in the same season. Samui is the awkward one, across the peninsula with its own calendar, so a trip that takes in all three works best from January to March, when all three are dry. Fly into Phuket, cross to Krabi, then go on to Samui by the bus-and-ferry combo or fly from Phuket.
Phuket to Krabi
Speedboats cross Phang Nga Bay to Ao Nang and East Railay in 1 to 2 hours (฿880–1,100) every day, and minivans take about 3 hours (฿275–385).
Phuket to Krabi, every optionPhuket to Koh Samui
Bangkok Airways flies it nonstop in 55 minutes, six or seven times a day. Overland it's a bus and ferry via Donsak, seven to eight hours, from about ฿700.
Phuket to Koh Samui, every optionKrabi to Koh Samui
There's no direct ferry. It's a bus-and-boat combo via Donsak pier, 5 to 8 hours from about ฿500, or Bangkok Airways' one nonstop flight, about 50 minutes.
