Practical guide
Krabi to Chiang Mai
From the Andaman coast to the northern hills, on the one airline that flies it nonstop.
Krabi to Chiang Mai is a 1 hour 55 minute flight, and Thai AirAsia is the only airline that flies it north without a stop. Its daily nonstops leave Krabi (KBV) at 10:25 and 15:25, with an evening flight around 19:35 on some days, and land at Chiang Mai (CNX) about two hours later. Bangkok Airways flies the route southbound only, and every other airline on the booking sites changes in Bangkok.

The flight I'd book is the 10:25, which leaves a relaxed morning to reach the airport from Ao Nang or Krabi Town and lands in Chiang Mai in time for lunch. Overland means a night bus to Bangkok and the night train north, about a day and a half, or one 25-hour van-and-bus ticket from Ao Nang.

Key Facts
Thai AirAsia flies nonstop, about 1h55
FD3073 leaves at 10:25 and lands at 12:20, FD3077 leaves at 15:25 and lands at 17:25, and Thai AirAsia's schedule also shows FD3075 at about 19:35 on some days. Check your date before you plan around the evening one.
Bangkok Airways doesn't fly north on this route
Its Chiang Mai to Krabi flight is one-way, south only. Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, Thai VietJet, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air all take you north through a Bangkok airport.
Ao Nang is 35–40 minutes from the airport by car
A fixed taxi is about ฿725 for a car and ฿790 for a van. The ฿150 airport bus from Ao Nang runs hourly from about 06:00 to 20:00 but can take 90 minutes with its stops.
From Koh Lanta, the last airport van is around 16:00
Vans run hourly from about 06:00 to 16:00 for about ฿380–540 and take 2 to 3 hours, so they suit the 15:25 only on an early van. A private car is about ฿2,100–3,100.
Overland is a night bus and a night train
A Lignite Tour bus from Krabi at 16:00–17:00 reaches Bangkok's Southern Terminal early the next morning, and the No. 9 sleeper leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40 for Chiang Mai at about 07:15.

The Nonstop Flight North, on Thai AirAsia
Which of the two daily flights to book
Thai AirAsia flies Krabi to Chiang Mai every day on an A320. FD3073 leaves at 10:25 and lands at 12:20, and FD3077 leaves at 15:25 and lands at 17:25. Its schedule also carries an evening flight, FD3075, at about 19:35, but it wasn't on sale for the mid-November date I checked, so I'd treat it as a bonus rather than a plan. No other airline flies north without a stop. Bangkok Airways' Chiang Mai to Krabi flight is one-way, so on Bangkok Airways the way back is through Suvarnabhumi.
The 10:25 is the one I'd book from Ao Nang, Krabi Town or Railay. You leave the hotel around 08:00, you're through security with time to spare, and you land in Chiang Mai in time for a khao soi lunch and an afternoon in the Old City. The 15:25 suits a last morning on the beach or a trip from Koh Lanta, and it lands at 17:25, in time for dinner in the Old City or the Sunday walking street.

Getting to Krabi Airport in Time
From Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Railay and Koh Lanta
From Ao Nang the airport is 28 km and 35 to 40 minutes by car. A fixed taxi is about ฿725 for a car or ฿790 for a van, and a car booked on 12Go is about ฿600–700 with a hotel pickup at the time you choose. The airport bus is ฿150 from Ao Nang and ฿90 from Krabi Town, hourly from about 06:00 to 20:00, but from Ao Nang it can take 90 minutes with its stops. Krabi Town is 12 km and about 20 minutes away. From Railay, take the longtail to Ao Nang first (฿100, 10 to 15 minutes), and add half an hour for the boat to fill.
From Koh Lanta, hotel-pickup vans run to the airport hourly from about 06:00 to 16:00 for about ฿380–540 and take 2 to 3 hours. For the 15:25 flight, book a morning van. For the 10:25, you'd need a private car (about ฿2,100–3,100, about two hours) at dawn, or a night in Krabi first, which is what I'd do. Our Koh Lanta to Krabi guide has every van and boat.
When the Nonstops Are Full, Change in Bangkok
About 18 nonstop flights a day leave Krabi for Bangkok in 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 35, to Don Mueang on Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air, and to Suvarnabhumi on Thai VietJet, Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. Flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai take about 70 to 80 minutes. Buy both legs on one ticket from one airline so a late first flight is the airline's problem, and expect five hours or more in total. If you'd like a night in Bangkok anyway, two separate one-way tickets on different days work fine.
Krabi to Chiang Mai Overland
Krabi has no railway, and the overland trip runs through Bangkok. Lignite Tour's night buses leave Krabi's Talat Kao terminal at 16:00 (฿779), 16:30 (฿796) and 17:00 for the VIP 24 (฿1,170), and Transport Co. runs from about ฿707. They reach Bangkok's Southern Terminal early the next morning, 12 to 14 hours later. Spend the day in Bangkok, then take the No. 9 sleeper from Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40, into Chiang Mai at about 07:15, at ฿941 for an upper second-class berth or ฿1,041 for a lower. That's about a day and a half and about ฿1,700–2,200 in fares, with two nights on the move.
12Go also sells one through ticket. Nitiphong Phai Boon Transport's van picks up in Ao Nang at 15:00, connects to its bus north, and reaches Chiang Mai's Bus Terminal 3 (Arcade) at 16:00 the next day, about 25 hours, for ฿1,938 with the booking fee. It had a single review when I checked, so I'd treat it as the fallback for someone set on the road, not a plan for a first trip.
My rule is the 10:25 nonstop, booked as soon as your dates are fixed. If it's gone, take the 15:25. Fly through Bangkok only when both are full, and only on one ticket.
Heading north? Plan the Chiang Mai end.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Krabi to Chiang Mai.
Yes, on Thai AirAsia, the only airline that flies it north without a stop. FD3073 leaves at 10:25 and FD3077 at 15:25, each about 1 hour 55 minutes, and an evening flight around 19:35 runs on some days. Bangkok Airways flies the route southbound only.
About 1 hour 55 minutes nonstop. A flight with a change in Bangkok takes five hours or more.
There's no train from Krabi. Take a night bus to Bangkok (Lignite Tour, 16:00 to 17:00 from Krabi's bus terminal, 12 to 14 hours), then the No. 9 sleeper from Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:40, arriving in Chiang Mai at about 07:15. Or take a van to Surat Thani's Phun Phin station for a sleeper to Bangkok, then the train north.
One through ticket. Nitiphong Phai Boon Transport's van leaves Ao Nang at 15:00 and connects to a bus that reaches Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3 at 16:00 the next day, about 25 hours, for ฿1,938 on 12Go. Otherwise it's a night bus to Bangkok and the sleeper train north.
About two hours before departure by taxi or pre-booked car, which takes 35 to 40 minutes. On the ฿150 airport bus, allow three, since it can take 90 minutes with its stops. For the 10:25, that means leaving Ao Nang around 08:00 by car.
They do different jobs, and most trips use both. Krabi is limestone cliffs, Railay and island boats. Chiang Mai is temples, the Old City, cooking classes and cool mountain air from November to February. With a week or more, start with one and fly the 1 hour 55 minute nonstop to the other.
