Where to Stay in Koh Samui

Seven beaches, seven personalities, one ring road connecting them all.

  • Chaweng: the big beach & nightlife
  • Lamai: Chaweng at 60% intensity
  • Bophut: boutique Fisherman's Village
  • Maenam: quiet sand, best value
  • Choeng Mon: family-luxury cove

The Short Answer

Here's the short version. Chaweng gets you Samui's biggest beach with restaurants and nightlife on tap. Lamai has the same swimmable sand at lower volume and price. Bophut's Fisherman's Village does boutique hotels and the island's most charming dining street, Maenam does quiet budget-friendly beachfront, and Choeng Mon does calm, family-friendly luxury ten minutes from the airport. Then there's Silver Beach for small-cove snorkeling, and the Lipa Noi–Taling Ngam west coast for sunsets and seclusion. All seven sit on one 50km ring road, so no choice strands you. But the island is big enough, an hour end to end in traffic, that your base sets the tone of the whole holiday. And one thing first-timers tend to miss: the northeast corner (Chaweng, Choeng Mon, Bophut) holds the airport, most of the restaurants, and most of the hotels. Stay there and your transfers stay short. The south and west trade that convenience for the Samui of twenty years ago.

Quick Picks by Traveler Type

First trip & nightlife → Chaweng

Six kilometers of white sand with the island's densest restaurant, bar, and shopping scene behind it. North Chaweng gives you the beach at arm's length from the noise. Central Chaweng puts you in it.

Couples & families wanting balance → Lamai

Samui's second beach delivers most of Chaweng's sand quality with half the crowds and prices, plus a proper Sunday night market, the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks, and a walkable low-rise center.

Boutique & food-led trips → Bophut (Fisherman's Village)

A restored shophouse street of boutique hotels, seafront restaurants, and the Friday Walking Street market. The beach is browner and calmer than Chaweng's. You're here for charm, dinners, and sunset views of Koh Phangan.

Budget & long stays → Maenam

The best-value beachfront on the island. Quiet gold sand, ฿1,000–2,500 bungalow resorts alongside a couple of five-star surprises, and the pier for Koh Phangan. Nightlife here is a beer at sunset, which is exactly the appeal.

Honeymoons & family luxury → Choeng Mon

A sheltered northeast cove of calm, shallow water ringed by upscale resorts, ten minutes from both the airport and Chaweng's restaurants. The island's best compromise between seclusion and access.

Mid-range = private double in a well-reviewed 3–4★ stay, shoulder season. Peak (Dec–Feb, Jul–Aug) adds 30–50%. Samui's rain peak is Oct–Nov — the opposite calendar to Phuket and Krabi.

Chaweng: The Main Event

Best for first-timers, nightlife, and beach-plus-everything convenience

Chaweng is Samui's showpiece: a six-kilometer crescent of powdery sand and swimmable water, backed by the island's biggest concentration of hotels, restaurants, beach clubs, and shopping, with Central Samui anchoring the strip. If you measure a beach holiday by how much is walkable from your sunbed, dinner choices, massages, nightlife, pharmacies, nothing else on the island comes close.

The beach changes mood by section, and it pays to know which one you're booking. North Chaweng, past the lake, is the quiet-luxury end, with calmer water, resorts with real grounds, and the noise reduced to a distant hum. Central Chaweng is the action: beach clubs by day, the Green Mango bar zone by night. South Chaweng and Chaweng Noi taper back down toward headland resorts with the best elevated views.

What you're accepting in exchange: peak-season Chaweng is busy, the road traffic is real, and beachfront rates carry the island's biggest premiums. If you're a light sleeper, stay north or on the Noi headland and treat the center as a night out rather than an address.

Lamai: The Balanced Alternative

Best for couples and families who want beach quality without the volume

Lamai is what a lot of returning visitors quietly choose. The sand and swimming are nearly Chaweng's equal, there's a genuine low-rise town behind the beach, and prices sit a solid notch lower for equivalent rooms. The southern end around the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks is the prettiest stretch. The center has the restaurants, the muay-thai gyms, and an excellent Sunday-night street market, and the hillside behind holds sea-view pool villas at prices Chaweng can't touch.

There is nightlife, a compact bar scene, but nothing like Chaweng's, and honestly that's most of the point. Evenings here mean seafood with sand underfoot, a plate crawl through the night market, maybe a beach bar with live music, and then actual quiet by midnight.

Two practical notes. You're 25–30 minutes from the airport and from Chaweng's restaurant depth, and the beach's north end gets rocky at low tide, so check which stretch your resort sits on. For most couples and families weighing where to stay in Koh Samui, Lamai is the value-for-experience sweet spot.

Bophut, Maenam & Choeng Mon: The North-Coast Characters

Boutique charm, quiet value, and family-luxury coves along one 15-minute stretch

Bophut's Fisherman's Village is Samui's most atmospheric address. The street of restored Chinese-Thai shophouses now holds boutique hotels, wine bars, and seafront restaurants, and it's at its liveliest during the Friday Walking Street market. The beach is calm but narrow, and browner than the east coast's. What Bophut offers instead of sand quality is charm, the island's best dinner scene, and sunset views across to Koh Phangan. Fair trade, we think.

Maenam, one bay west, is the budget-and-peace pick: a long, quiet, golden beach where ฿1,200 still buys a beachfront bungalow. Tellingly, a five-star hides at each end of it (W Koh Samui, with Four Seasons a headland away), which says everything about the sand itself. This is also the Koh Phangan pier bay, so Full Moon logistics are easy while the party stays a boat ride away.

Choeng Mon rounds the northeast corner. It's a sheltered cove of shallow, toddler-calm water ringed by upscale resorts, ten minutes from the airport and ten from Chaweng's restaurant depth. Honeymooners and families with small kids end up here for good reason. Nowhere else on the island combines quiet and access this well.

Samui logistics in one line: songthaews ply the ring road cheaply by day, Grab and Bolt work but cost more than on the mainland, and scooters are the local default. Wear the helmet, always. And if you've never ridden before, don't learn here — Samui's ring road has one of the grimmest accident rates in Thailand.

Silver Beach & the West Coast: The Escape Hatches

Small-cove snorkeling and Samui's only sunset coast

Silver Beach (Haad Thong Ta-khian, sometimes sold as Crystal Bay) is the little cove the ring road hides between Chaweng and Lamai. A few hundred meters of white sand bracketed by granite boulders, with the island's most reliable off-the-beach snorkeling. A handful of small resorts share it, so staying here means a near-private bay at dawn while both big beach towns sit ten minutes away in either direction. For couples on a mid-range budget, it's one of the smartest bookings on the island.

The west coast, Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam, is a different island entirely. Shallow, glass-calm water. Villa resorts scattered among coconut groves. Views over the Five Islands, and the only shoreline on Samui that faces the sunset. This is seclusion with a capital S: barefoot dinners, private-pool villas, and evenings where the sky does the entertaining instead of a bar.

The trade on both is depth. Few restaurants, little to walk to, and 25–50 minutes to Chaweng's action or the airport. First-timers usually do better splitting the trip, a few nights on the east or north coast and then two on the west for the sunset finale, rather than committing the whole stay to the quiet side.

Samui Airport (USM) → your beach

Ten minutes from runway to sunbed, if you book it right

USM sits on the island's northeast corner. Chaweng and Choeng Mon are 5–15 minutes away, Bophut about 15, Lamai and Maenam 20–30. Airport taxis quote flat rates well above mainland prices, so a pre-booked Kiwitaxi (code THAILAND5) or your resort's shuttle usually wins. Arriving by ferry instead? Boats dock at Nathon or Maenam's piers on the far side, so budget an extra 30–45 minutes.
