Forget the polished luxury malls for an afternoon. MBK is closer to an indoor market with air conditioning, eight floors and about 2,000 small shops and stalls selling phones, cases, souvenirs, bags, watches and clothes, and the smaller stalls expect you to bargain. Whole floors keep to one theme, so it's easy to work through once you know the layout. If you want fixed prices and quiet, you'll hate it. If you enjoy circling three stalls to compare the same item, you'll lose several hours happily.

The 4th floor is the reason many people come. MBK calls it the Mobile & IT Zone, with more than 250 phone, repair and accessory shops plus the TRUE and AIS counters for a Thai SIM. The souvenir zone is on the 3rd floor in Zone D, the place for cheap gifts. For food, Food Legends on the 6th floor is the food court with Thai street-food dishes, and the 7th floor has more restaurants beside the SF cinemas. The tailors are a genuine draw too, but agree the price and the fitting dates in writing before you hand over a deposit, and check any second-hand phone properly before paying.

MBK is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. BTS National Stadium connects straight in by a covered walkway, and a covered bridge from the 2nd floor crosses Phaya Thai Road to Siam Square, so skip the taxi. At the service counter on G floor, Zone A, show the mall's tourist privilege QR codes for discount coupons and your passport for a small welcome gift. Luggage storage with airport delivery is on the 6th floor, Zone B, until 20:00. Platinum Fashion Mall in Pratunam is the other bargain mall people compare it with, but it's for clothes, with wholesale prices from about three pieces, while MBK has the phones and souvenirs. On the first and last Wednesday of the month there's a free Muay Thai fight night outside, gates at 17:00.
