From the Airport, Take a Car. From Phuket Town, the Bus Works.
Khao Lak is about 75 to 80 km north of Phuket airport, up Highway 402 over the Sarasin Bridge and onto Highway 4, and the drive takes 80 to 100 minutes depending on which beach you're staying on. There's no ferry and no airport of its own, so everyone arrives by road. If you're landing at Phuket, the official taxi counter in arrivals charges a fixed ฿1,800 to Khao Lak for up to three people, and a pre-booked transfer costs about the same with a driver waiting inside the terminal. The cheap option is the public bus north toward Takua Pa and Ranong, ฿130–250 for about two hours, but it starts at Phuket Bus Terminal 2 in Phuket Town, south of the airport, and it never comes to the terminal. So the rule is simple. From the airport, take a car. From Phuket Town or a few nights in Patong, the bus is fine.

Bus and van times and fares from 12Go's live board, which adds a booking fee to the counter price.

From Phuket Airport, Take the Taxi Counter or Pre-Book
After a long flight this is the only part of the trip worth spending money on. The official counter, Phuket Airport Limousine, sits at exit gates 1 and 2 in arrivals and works on fixed zone fares, so you know the price before you get in. Khao Lak, Kapong and Tap-Pud are ฿1,800 for a car with up to three people, ฿2,200 for an SUV with room for four (daytime only, 07:00–18:00) and ฿2,500 for a ten-seat minibus. The resorts further north, Khuk Khak, the Le Méridien stretch and Takua Pa, are ฿2,000 for the car, and Thap Lamu just south of Khao Lak is ฿1,600.
Pre-booking costs about the same and saves the queue. Kiwitaxi starts from about $54 with the driver holding your name inside the terminal and 90 minutes of free waiting, local Khao Lak taxi firms quote ฿1,500–1,700 to the main resorts, and several resorts arrange the car themselves from ฿1,500 per way. Ask your hotel first; if they quote more than the counter, take the counter.
What about Grab? I couldn't find a reliable Grab fare for this run, and a car app is the riskiest option on a 75 km trip from an airport with its own fixed-fare counter. The ฿1,800 counter price is the benchmark to judge anything else against.
The Bus Is Cheap, but It Starts in Phuket Town
Public buses to Khao Lak are the buses heading north up the coast, to Takua Pa, Ranong, Surat Thani and beyond. They leave Phuket Bus Terminal 2 in Phuket Town from about 05:30, with departures through the day until about 16:30, and take around two hours to Khao Lak. At the counter they cost about ฿130–250 depending on the operator; booked through 12Go with the fee it's about ฿270. Avoid the ones routed through Phang Nga town, which take the long way round. Tell the driver Nang Thong or Bang Niang and they'll stop on the highway beside the beaches; the stops on 12Go's board are Nang Thong, Bang Niang and the Thap Lamu junction.
From the airport the bus is a false economy. Neither airport bus goes north: the 8411 runs to Phuket Town and the Smart Bus to the west-coast beaches. Some northbound buses stop at a roadside shelter on Highway 402 that 12Go calls the Phuket Airport Intersection, but it's out on the highway rather than at the terminal, and reviewers disagree on how far. Add the ride out there, a bus that's often late and full enough to stand, and the saving over a shared ฿1,800 car is small for two people and nothing for three.
From Patong or Phuket Town it makes more sense. Get yourself to Bus Terminal 2 by taxi or songthaew, take a morning bus, and you're on Nang Thong by lunchtime for a fraction of the car fare. If you'd rather not haul bags across town, the shared vans pick up from Phuket hotels at ฿550–750 a seat.
Which Part of Khao Lak Are You Going To?
Khao Lak is a string of beaches along Highway 4 rather than one town, and the fares and the drive time both depend on which one you're staying on. Heading north from the airport you pass Thap Lamu, the Similan pier, at about 71 km, then the Khao Lak headland, then Nang Thong at about 75 km, the busiest strip with the most restaurants and shops. Bang Niang follows at 78 km, Khuk Khak at 81 km, and Pakarang with its quieter resorts at 87 km.
That's why the airport counter splits Khao Lak into zones: ฿1,800 for Nang Thong and Bang Niang, ฿2,000 from Khuk Khak north. Give the driver your hotel's name rather than just "Khao Lak", and if you're booking a bus, check which stop is closest to your hotel before you buy.
Khao Lak to Phuket Airport for a Flight
Going back, the first buses leave Bang Niang at about 06:20 and Nang Thong at 06:25 and take about 1 hour 50 minutes to the highway stop outside the airport, from where you still need a ride to the terminal. That works for an afternoon flight with plenty of slack. For anything before midday, take a car.
The airport asks you to be there two hours before a flight, and the drive is 80 to 100 minutes, so I'd leave Khao Lak three and a half to four hours before departure. Your hotel can book the car the night before, and a pre-booked transfer fixes the price.

Is Khao Lak Worth It Instead of Phuket?
For a beach holiday that's mostly about the beach, often yes. Khao Lak's beaches are long, quiet and lined with resorts rather than bars, and it's the base for the Similan Islands, the best snorkeling and diving within a day's reach of Phuket. What it doesn't have is Phuket's restaurants, nightlife and choice of day trips, and anything outside your resort means a ride along the highway. Our Phuket vs Khao Lak comparison goes through it beach by beach.
If the Similans are the reason you're going, check your dates. The islands are a national park that closes every year from mid-May to mid-October, and the 2026 closure ran from 16 May to 15 October. Day trips leave Thap Lamu pier, 15 km south of Nang Thong, and pick up from Khao Lak hotels in the early morning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about phuket to khao lak.
The official airport counter, Phuket Airport Limousine, charges a fixed ฿1,800 for a car with up to three people to Khao Lak's Nang Thong and Bang Niang, ฿2,000 to Khuk Khak and the resorts further north, ฿2,200 for an SUV for four (07:00–18:00) and ฿2,500 for a ten-seat minibus. Pre-booked transfers cost about ฿1,500–2,000.
About 80 to 100 minutes by car for the 75–80 km, depending on which beach you're staying on. The public bus from Phuket Town takes about two hours, plus the time to get from the airport to the bus.
About 75 km to Nang Thong, Khao Lak's main beach, 78 km to Bang Niang, 81 km to Khuk Khak and 87 km to Pakarang, north on Highway 402 and Highway 4. From Patong it's about 106 km.
Not from the terminal. The buses to Khao Lak are the northbound buses from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 in Phuket Town, 05:30 to about 16:30, ฿130–250 at the counter. Some stop at a roadside shelter on Highway 402 outside the airport, but you need a ride to reach it, and the airport's own buses only go south.
I couldn't find a reliable Grab fare for the route. The airport's fixed-fare counter charges ฿1,800 for a car to Khao Lak, and a pre-booked transfer about the same, so either is the safer choice for a 75 km trip.
No. Khao Lak is on the mainland north of Phuket and every route is by road. Thap Lamu pier near Khao Lak is for the boats to the Similan Islands.
About three and a half to four hours before departure. The drive is 80 to 100 minutes and the airport asks you to arrive two hours before a flight. The first buses leave about 06:20 and only reach the highway outside the airport, so take a car for anything before midday.
Quieter, certainly. Khao Lak has long, uncrowded beaches lined with resorts and is the base for the Similan Islands, while Phuket has far more restaurants, nightlife and day trips. Our Phuket vs Khao Lak comparison has the detail.
The national park closes every year from mid-May to mid-October; in 2026 it closed from 16 May to 15 October. Day trips leave Thap Lamu pier, about 15 km south of Nang Thong, with early-morning hotel pickups in Khao Lak.
