About Kanchanaburi Railway Station

Kanchanaburi Railway Station is the main stop in town on the line from Bangkok, and the place most people board the old Death Railway. Two ordinary trains a day leave Bangkok's Thon Buri station at 07:45 and 13:55 and reach Kanchanaburi about two and three-quarter hours later. They don't end here. Both carry on a few minutes north to the River Kwai Bridge station, across the bridge itself, and on to Nam Tok, crossing the wooden Tham Krasae viaduct on the way.

Foreigners pay a flat ฿100 to any station on the line, bought at the window on the day. There's no online or advance sale, so I'd get to the station a little early. Coming back, the morning train from Nam Tok passes through around 07:05 and the afternoon one around 14:43, both bound for Thon Buri.

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre are both about 250 m from the station, so it's easy to pair the train with either. If you only want the bridge and the viaduct, you can join the train here and skip the slow first stretch out of Bangkok. Trains are few, so plan the day around the timetable.

Reviews from Google

Nestled not too far from the bustling city of Bangkok, Kanchanaburi is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. I opted for the train journey from Bangkok, a choice I was delighted with given the affordability of the train tickets. Although the train lacked air conditioning, the journey was surprisingly comfortable, and the daylight travel didn't leave me feeling overheated. Kanchanaburi may be smaller in scale compared to the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok, but it effortlessly makes up for it with its charm and diverse offerings. The city caters to various modes of transportation, whether you prefer biking, driving, or the scenic train ride. I found the train journey particularly enjoyable, offering glimpses of the Thai countryside and adding an extra layer of adventure to the overall experience. What makes Kanchanaburi special is its versatility. Despite its size, the city has everything one could need. The options for exploration are diverse, ranging from intriguing temples to the natural wonders of Erawan National Park. For nature enthusiasts like me, the park provided an opportunity to engage in activities like hiking and camping, surrounded by lush greenery and the enchanting beauty of waterfalls. One of the standout experiences in Kanchanaburi was the chance to interact with elephants. The city offers ethical and responsible ways to engage with these majestic creatures, allowing visitors to contribute to their well-being. It was a heartwarming experience, and it added a unique dimension to my trip. For those seeking a bit of adventure, Kanchanaburi doesn't disappoint. The river presents opportunities for thrilling water sports, making it an ideal destination for those craving excitement on the water. The laid-back atmosphere of the city, coupled with its adventurous offerings, creates a perfect blend for a short getaway. Kanchanaburi caters not only to short visits but also accommodates those with more time to spare. Whether you're a history buff exploring the remnants of the famous Death Railway or a nature lover immersing yourself in the serene landscapes, Kanchanaburi unfolds its treasures at a leisurely pace.

Small train station. Very few train run. . Near the station food market is there in the evening sa I came around 5 pm. Food are very good and cheeper. Station counter Lady do not know how to answer a foreigner. As we are new and language barrier difficult to understand. The next gentleman help me. Toilet facilities are very good. Clean. 2024 May

At this train station, all foreigners have to pay 100 Baht for any destination. If you pay in cash, you need the exact amount, or you can pay by QR code—credit cards are not accepted. You won’t find the timetable on the Thailand Railway website because it’s a special train. Arrive 30 minutes early to buy your ticket. Here’s the timetable I found at the station. The train was late and I missed the connection for the next train. Good luck, guys! 🚂

Tips for Visiting Transportation

Use Grab Everywhere

Grab is the Uber of Southeast Asia and works across Thailand for cars, motorbike taxis, and even tuk-tuks in some cities. It eliminates haggling and provides fare estimates upfront. Load a Thai SIM or use eSIM to stay connected.

Rent Scooters Carefully

Always photograph the scooter's existing damage before riding off, and keep your passport — give a photocopy instead (some shops insist on the original; avoid these). Wear a helmet; police fine 500 THB for no helmet and accidents without one void insurance.

Get a Rabbit Card for Bangkok

The Rabbit card is Bangkok's reloadable transit card for BTS Skytrain, and it also works at convenience stores and some restaurants. Buy one at any BTS station for 200 THB (100 deposit + 100 credit). It saves time waiting in line for single-journey tokens.
