Mae Haad Pier

Mae Haad Pier is the primary entry and exit point for Koh Tao, handling the majority of ferry and speedboat traffic connecting the island to Chumphon on the mainland, as well as neighbouring islands including Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Most visitors to Koh Tao will pass through this pier at least twice during their trip, making it a central hub for island transport logistics. The pier area is busy and functional, with ticket offices, transport touts, luggage storage, and basic facilities clustered nearby. Songthaews and taxis are typically available directly outside to transfer arriving passengers to accommodation across the island. The surrounding area also has a small concentration of shops, restaurants, and dive operators catering to travellers in transit. The pier operates around the clock, though ferry and speedboat schedules are concentrated in the morning and afternoon hours. Travellers are advised to book tickets in advance during peak season, particularly around Thai public holidays and the high season months from December to March, when vessels fill quickly. Arriving with extra time before departure is recommended, as boarding can be disorganised during busy periods. Luggage allowances vary by operator, so checking restrictions ahead of travel is worthwhile.
