Bangkok to Kanchanaburi

Take the Train There and the Bus Back

Kanchanaburi is about 130 km west of Bangkok, and there are two good ways to get there. The train is the reason to go by rail at all. Two ordinary trains a day leave Thon Buri station, on the river side of Bangkok, at 07:45 and 13:55, reach Kanchanaburi about two and three-quarter hours later and roll straight on across the Bridge on the River Kwai on the old Death Railway. Foreigners pay a flat ฿100, tickets are sold at the station on the day, and there's nothing to book. The road is faster. Buses leave the Southern Terminal about every 15 minutes from 05:00 for around ฿110 and take about two hours, and since the M81 motorway opened in late 2025 a car does it in about two hours too, from about ฿2,500. My pick is the 07:45 train out, because the ride is half the point of going, and a bus or the 14:43 train back.

Key Facts

Two trains a day from Thon Buri, ฿100 for foreigners

Nos. 257 and 259 leave Thon Buri at 07:45 and 13:55 and reach Kanchanaburi at about 10:30 and 16:20, then cross the River Kwai bridge minutes later. Third class, fans and open windows. Thai citizens pay ฿25.

There's no booking, you buy the ticket at the station

The ordinary trains aren't sold online or in advance. Turn up 30 to 60 minutes early, buy at the window and take any free seat.

Buses run from the Southern Terminal every 15 minutes

First-class buses from Sai Tai Mai, the Southern Terminal, from 05:00 to 22:30, about two hours, around ฿110. Vans also leave from the Mo Chit van terminal, and tourist minibuses from Khao San Road.

A car takes about two hours on the new M81 motorway

The 96 km Bang Yai–Kanchanaburi motorway opened in October 2025, with tolls of ฿45–150 for a car since January 2026. Private cars from Bangkok cost about ฿2,500–2,800.

It's about 130 km, and the bridge is 3 km north of the center

Buses stop at the terminal in the town center. The train calls at Kanchanaburi station and then at the River Kwai Bridge station beside the bridge itself.

A day trip works, but two days is better

On the train you get about four hours in town before the 14:43 back. Erawan Falls and Hellfire Pass are each over an hour further out, so they need a night.

Times from Richard Barrow's Death Railway timetable. Other published timetables put the Kanchanaburi arrivals up to ten minutes either side, so be at the station early for the trains back. A third train, No. 486, leaves Nam Tok at 15:30 but stops at Kanchanaburi and doesn't go on to Bangkok.

The ฿100 Train From Thon Buri

Every regular train to Kanchanaburi starts at Thon Buri, not at Hua Lamphong or the new Krung Thep Aphiwat terminal. Thon Buri station sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya near Siriraj Hospital, a short walk from the Thonburi Railway pier on the Chao Phraya Express boat. The 07:45 and the 13:55 are third-class ordinary trains with ceiling fans and windows that open, and the flat ฿100 fare for foreigners covers any station on the line, so the same ticket takes you over the bridge to Nam Tok if you stay on. Thai citizens pay ฿25.

There's no advance sale. You buy the ticket at the window on the day, there are no reserved seats, and the trains don't sell out, though you may stand for the first stretch. The ride runs through Nakhon Pathom, past the giant chedi, and across rice fields and sugar cane, and it takes about two and three-quarter hours to Kanchanaburi station, then seven minutes more to the River Kwai Bridge station at the bridge itself.

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there's also an excursion train, No. 909, from Hua Lamphong at 06:30 that stops for half an hour at the bridge and runs on to Nam Tok, coming back the same evening to Bangkok at 19:25, ฿120 return in a fan coach or ฿240 with air-conditioning. It's sold on SRT's D-Ticket site and fills up early.

Floods closed the line beyond Wang Pho in late September 2026, and SRT reopened it as far as Wang Pho, which includes the Tham Krasae viaduct, on 3 October. Bangkok to Kanchanaburi and the bridge weren't affected, but if you plan to ride on to Nam Tok, ask at Thon Buri or call SRT's 1690 line before you go.

Buses and Vans From the Southern Terminal and Mo Chit

If you'd rather be there in two hours, take the bus. First-class buses to Kanchanaburi leave the Southern Terminal, Sai Tai Mai, in Taling Chan on the west side of the city, about every 15 minutes from 05:00 to 22:30 for around ฿110. There are also vans from the Mo Chit van terminal in Chatuchak, about ฿210 booked online, and the tourist minibuses from Khao San Road, ฿415 to ฿490 online, which drop at the bridge, a riverside resort or the bus terminal. The vans that used to leave from Victory Monument moved to the bus terminals in 2016, so ignore older guides that send you there.

The buses arrive at Kanchanaburi's bus terminal in the town center. Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre are in town too, and the bridge is about 3 km north of the War Cemetery, so a songthaew, a Grab or a tuk-tuk gets you to the bridge and the riverside guesthouses.

By Car on the New M81 Motorway

The M81 Bang Yai–Kanchanaburi motorway changed the drive. It's 96 km of new road from Bangkok's western edge, it opened toll-free at the end of October 2025, and it has charged tolls of ฿45 to ฿150 for a car since 16 January 2026. From a central Bangkok hotel the whole trip is about 125 to 130 km and about two hours, depending on how long it takes to get out of the city.

On 12Go, private cars from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi start at about ฿2,000 and sedans mostly cost ฿2,500 to ฿2,800, door to door. For a family with bags it's the easy option, and you can ask the driver to stop at Nakhon Pathom's chedi on the way.

Day Trip or Overnight?

A day trip works if what you want is the bridge, the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the railway museum. On the 07:45 train you're at Kanchanaburi at about 10:30 and the bridge at 10:37, the cemetery and the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre are side by side in town, and the last train back leaves Kanchanaburi at 14:43 (14:34 from the bridge) and reaches Thon Buri at 17:40. That's about four hours on the ground, enough for those three, or take a bus back in the evening and stay longer.

For anything further out, stay at least one night. Hellfire Pass, the cutting where Allied prisoners and Asian laborers dug through rock by hand, is about 80 km northwest of town, and its museum is free and open daily from 09:00 to 16:00. Erawan Falls is about 1.5 hours away by bus 8170, the park charges foreign adults ฿300, and the last bus back to town leaves at 16:30. The 257 continues from the bridge over the Tham Krasae viaduct to Nam Tok, a ride most people do on their second morning. Two nights covers all of it without rushing.

Kanchanaburi to Bangkok

Two trains a day run back to Bangkok, the 07:05 and the 14:43 from Kanchanaburi station (06:59 and 14:34 from the bridge), reaching Thon Buri at 09:35 and 17:40. Charan Sanitwong, one of the last stops before Thon Buri, is next to MRT Bang Khun Non on the Blue Line, which is the easier place to get off if you're heading into the city.

Buses back to the Southern Terminal leave Kanchanaburi's bus terminal through the day, and vans run to Mo Chit and to Khao San Road. For an early flight, a car from your Kanchanaburi hotel to either Bangkok airport costs about the same as one into the city.
