Why go, and how to do it well
The Bridge over the River Kwai carries the Thailand–Burma Railway, the Death Railway, across the Khwae Yai river at the north end of Kanchanaburi town. The line was built by the Japanese army in 1942 and 1943 with the forced labor of Allied prisoners of war and conscripted Asian workers, tens of thousands of whom died, and the bridge is the most visited memorial to them. The curved steel spans are the wartime originals, and the straight central spans replaced the ones destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945.
The bridge is about 3 km north of the War Cemetery and the town center, and free to walk across at any time. Trains still use it, so walkers step onto the small platforms along the side when one comes through. From Bangkok, trains 257 and 259 reach the River Kwai Bridge station at the east end at 10:37 and 16:28 and carry on across the bridge toward Nam Tok, and the trains back to Bangkok leave it at 06:59 and 14:34.
The bridge is busiest late morning when the tour groups arrive, and quietest early. The Thailand–Burma Railway Centre and the War Cemetery in town tell the history properly, and Hellfire Pass, 80 km up the line, is the place to understand what building it cost.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Major temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun are dramatically less crowded before 9 AM. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
