Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport

Small airports are underrated, and this one makes the case. It's the main way into Chiang Rai province and the top of northern Thailand, handling domestic and international flights at a scale that feels nothing like Bangkok. People report dropping bags in about ten minutes and clearing security just as fast. Check-in through to a final destination abroad is possible, which saves a lot of faff.

The catch is what happens after security. Landside you've got coffee shops, restaurants and car rental desks, plus some pleasant northern decorative touches. Past the gate, it thins out to roughly two food and drink outlets and not much else. Restrooms come up repeatedly as clean, air-con adequate, and the layout is easy enough that you won't need to hunt for anything. Shopping is thin throughout, so buy your souvenirs in Chiang Rai city rather than hoping for a decent gift shop here.
