Why go, and how to do it well
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, known locally as Don Rak, is the main burial ground for the Allied prisoners of war who died building the Thailand–Burma Railway in 1942 and 1943. It is cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and nearly 7,000 British, Australian and Dutch prisoners lie here in long rows of bronze-plaqued graves set in a lawn that is kept immaculate.
The cemetery is in the middle of Kanchanaburi town on Saeng Chuto Road, beside the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre, so the two make one visit. Entry is free and it's open every day, with the office staffed on weekdays and Saturday mornings. The River Kwai bridge is about 3 km north.
Dress and behave as you would at any war grave. Mornings are cooler and quieter. The smaller Chong Kai War Cemetery, across the river south of town, is the second Commonwealth cemetery in Kanchanaburi.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Major temples like Wat Pho and Wat Arun are dramatically less crowded before 9 AM. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
