Kanchanaburi to Bangkok
Two trains a day, or a bus whenever you're ready
Kanchanaburi to Bangkok is about 130 km, and there are only two trains a day. The 07:05 and the 14:43 leave Kanchanaburi station for Thon Buri, on the river side of Bangkok, arriving at 09:35 and 17:40, and foreigners pay a flat ฿100 for a third-class seat bought at the window. Buses are the flexible choice. They leave the bus terminal in the town center through the day, take about two hours to Bangkok's Southern Terminal and cost around ฿110, and vans run to Mo Chit and to Khao San Road.
Check live Kanchanaburi → Bangkok times and seats on 12Go
A car on the M81 highway takes about two hours for about ฿2,500–2,800, to your hotel or straight to the airport. If you're leaving in the afternoon, the 14:43 train is the one I'd take for the ride, and if it's later than that, take the bus.

The Kanchanaburi to Bangkok Train Timetable
| Train | Nam Tok | River Kwai Bridge | Kanchanaburi | Thon Buri |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No. 260 | 05:20 | 06:59 | 07:05 | 09:35 |
| No. 258 | 13:00 | 14:34 | 14:43 | 17:40 |
Times from Richard Barrow's Death Railway timetable. Other published timetables put the Kanchanaburi departures a few minutes either side, so be at the station early. No. 486 leaves Nam Tok at 15:30 but stops at Kanchanaburi and doesn't go on to Bangkok.
The ฿100 Train Back to Thon Buri
The train back is the same third-class ordinary train that brought most people out, with ceiling fans, windows that open and a flat ฿100 fare for foreigners from any station on the line. You buy the ticket at the window on the day, take any free seat, and the trains don't sell out. No. 260 leaves Kanchanaburi at 07:05 and No. 258 at 14:43, and both start further up the line, at Nam Tok and over the Tham Krasae viaduct, so at the River Kwai Bridge station you board at 06:59 or 14:34.
The 14:43 is the one most people take. It's a day in town and an evening in Bangkok, and it reaches Thon Buri at 17:40 after about three hours through the cane fields and past the chedi at Nakhon Pathom. The 07:05 suits an early start for a flight or a meeting later in the day.
If you came out on the weekend excursion train, No. 909 from Hua Lamphong, your round-trip ticket already covers the ride back, which reaches Hua Lamphong at 19:25.
Where to Get Off in Bangkok
Thon Buri, the end of the line, is on the west bank of the Chao Phraya near Siriraj Hospital and nowhere near the BTS or MRT. To get into the city from there, walk about 1 km through the hospital grounds to the Thonburi Railway pier and take a Chao Phraya Express boat, north to Phra Arthit for Khao San Road or south to Sathorn pier for the BTS at Saphan Taksin. Taxis wait at the station, but many ask a fixed fare instead of using the meter.
The easier stop for most of the city is Charan Sanitwong, one of the last stations before Thon Buri, which sits beside MRT Bang Khun Non on the Blue Line. From there the MRT runs to Sukhumvit, Silom and Chinatown, and to Krung Thep Aphiwat.
For Don Mueang airport, one route regular travelers on Tripadvisor recommend is to get off earlier at Taling Chan and take the SRT Light Red Line to Krung Thep Aphiwat, then change to the Dark Red Line, which stops at Don Mueang. It skips the city traffic, but with a flight to catch a car is simpler.

Buses and Vans From Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal
Buses back to Bangkok leave Kanchanaburi's bus terminal in the town center through the day, from early morning into the evening, and take about two hours to the Southern Terminal, Sai Tai Mai, in Taling Chan on Bangkok's west side. The fare is around ฿110 at the window, and booking sites list Kanchanaburi Express at about ฿130 and GO Family's coaches at about ฿240. From the Southern Terminal a taxi or Grab gets you into the city.
Vans run from Kanchanaburi to the Mo Chit van terminal in Chatuchak, which suits the north of the city and Don Mueang, and tourist minibuses run to Khao San Road, picking up at guesthouses and near the bridge; ask where you're staying or book on 12Go. Buses and vans are the way back after the last train at 14:43.
By Car, to the City or the Airport
A private car takes about two hours on the M81 Bang Yai–Kanchanaburi highway, which has charged tolls of ฿45 to ฿150 for a car since January 2026, usually included in a booked fare. On 12Go, sedans from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok mostly cost ฿2,500 to ฿2,800, and a car straight to Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang costs about the same as one into the city. For an early flight it's the easy answer, since the first train doesn't reach Bangkok until 09:35.
From Erawan Falls, Hellfire Pass or Nam Tok
From Erawan Falls, bus 8170 runs back to Kanchanaburi town in about 1.5 hours, and the last one leaves the park at 16:30, so it connects with an evening bus to Bangkok but not with a train. From Hellfire Pass, about 80 km northwest of town, the train option is No. 258 from Nam Tok at 13:00, which runs through Kanchanaburi to Thon Buri; otherwise go back to town and take a bus.
Nam Tok is the end of the Death Railway, and No. 260 leaves there at 05:20 and No. 258 at 13:00, on the same ฿100 ticket all the way to Bangkok, crossing the Tham Krasae viaduct and the River Kwai bridge on the way.
