Wat Thewa Sangkharam
Situated in central Kanchanaburi close to the River Kwai, Wat Thewa Sangkharam is a large, active Buddhist temple that functions as a genuine centre of community life rather than a site maintained purely for visitors. The grounds are more expansive than they initially appear, encompassing a local school alongside both older and newer temple structures — all kept in excellent condition and blending together seamlessly. A notable recent addition is the 12 Zodiac Viharn, which houses three Buddhist statues following the Mahayana tradition and offers something of interest even for visitors already familiar with Thai temple architecture. The atmosphere throughout is calm and welcoming. Temple dogs roam the grounds comfortably, monks are open to visitors joining prayer sessions or merit-making activities, and ample car parking makes arrival straightforward. The site feels genuinely lived-in — a working religious community rather than a curated attraction — which gives visits a sense of authenticity that is easy to appreciate. Good to know: The temple is open every day from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing flexibility across the day. Early morning visits are the quietest and offer the best chance to observe monks during their daily routines. Visitors should dress respectfully by covering shoulders and knees, and shoes must be removed before entering any buildings. Small donations are customary. The temple maintains an active Facebook page at facebook.com/temple71000, which is worth checking for upcoming ceremonies or special events before visiting.

Visitor Reviews
We visited this temple on 11 May 2025. It s Vesak Day and International Mother’s Day today. Temple area is peaceful. Well maintained and clean. Lots of car park spaces.
Huge temple in kanchanaburi. Can make merit here and also join in prayer sessions. Monks are more than happy to have people sit in and take part.
New structural in this temple is called 12 zodiac viharn with 3 buddhist statues according to Mahayana Nikai of Buddhism.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
