Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Why go, and how to do it well
Luka is the brunch café people in Silom send visitors to. It sits on Pan Road, the lane beside the Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple, in a space it shares with the Casa Pagoda furniture store, and this was the first branch of what is now a small group. The menu is global comfort food, with breakfast burritos, avocado toast, açaí and quinoa bowls and Korean-style chicken and waffles, alongside a full coffee bar.
It is not cheap by Bangkok standards. Google puts a typical spend at ฿400 to ฿600 a person, which buys a long, relaxed brunch rather than a quick coffee.
It is open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, and weekends are busy from mid-morning. BTS Surasak is the nearest station, and the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at the end of the lane is worth the two-minute detour.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
Use Grab for Delivery
The Grab app works for food delivery across Thailand, letting you order from street stalls and restaurants alike. It's invaluable on rainy days or when you want to eat in your hotel.
