Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (Wat Khaek)

4.7(13,311 reviews)

Standing in the heart of Bangkok's Bang Rak district since 1873, this Hindu temple is one of the city's most visually striking places of worship. Dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, the temple is crowned by an elaborate five-tiered tower covered in richly coloured, hand-carved figurines — a hallmark of South Indian Dravidian architecture that sets it apart from the Thai Buddhist temples more commonly seen across the city. Inside, the atmosphere is one of active devotion rather than quiet tourism. Worshippers come throughout the day to pray to deities including Ganesha and Parvati, and the interior is described by visitors as exquisite. The temple draws a genuine mix of Bangkok's Hindu community alongside curious travellers, giving it an authenticity that purely tourist-facing sites often lack. Weekends tend to draw larger crowds, so those seeking a more contemplative visit may prefer a weekday afternoon. As an active place of worship, visitors are expected to dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered. Photography is not permitted inside the temple, so plan to be fully present in the moment. The temple opens early at 6:00am most days, making a morning visit a quieter and more peaceful option before the crowds arrive. Admission is free, though small offerings can be purchased on-site as part of the prayer experience.

Visitor Reviews

This was an amazing experience. Be sure to cover up and wear a mask. This is an Indian temple where the locals worship. No pictures allowed inside the temple. Inside is absolutely exquisite. It was inspiring to see how they worship and give offerings.

Very beautiful temple. Lot of foreigners visit these temple. It was very crowded on a Saturday. Nice to see other country people visiting a hindu temple

I visited Wat Khaek in Bangkok and loved the beautiful South Indian architecture and peaceful atmosphere. I prayed and made offerings following KengNamping’s vlog, which made the experience meaningful. There are two offering sets priced at 60 or 100 THB, which include a tray of flowers, oil, drinking water and a random card (random). You can take water and a card home. You can also roll a 20-baht note and place it in a lotus to offer to the Goddess.🪷 For an Silver or gold eye-offering ritual, the sets cost 300 THB for silver or 1,000 THB for gold. When you give a tray to Brahmin priests, they will give you a flower garland, one fruit, holy water to take home. The holy water and drinking water can be used for bathing, washing your hair, or drinking. The temple feels very sacred, well maintained, and is a great place to visit for blessings and cultural experience in the city.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
