Why go, and how to do it well

The climb is the point here, or at least half of it. The trail up runs through dense jungle and around big boulders, uphill most of the way, and it asks a bit of you. Not a mountaineering effort, but enough that flip-flops are a bad idea and anyone shaky on uneven rock will find it slow going. The tree cover keeps most of the path shaded, which helps.

At the top you get an open outlook across the bay and the hilly interior, the kind of view that finally makes sense of how the island is shaped. If you've spent your Koh Tao trip underwater or on a beach, this is the correction. Go early or late, not at midday, when the heat on that climb turns unpleasant and the light is flat.
