Chumphon to Koh Tao

The shortest crossing to Koh Tao, morning or afternoon

By Mac Kiley · 4 min read · Updated Oct 19, 2026

Two Catamarans a Day Each Way, Plus the Night Ferry

Chumphon is the closest mainland port to Koh Tao, and the catamaran crossing takes 1 hour 45. Two companies run it. Lomprayah's catamarans leave Thung Makham Noi pier at 07:00 and 13:15 and land at Mae Haad at 08:45 and 15:00 for ฿750, and Boonsiri's leave its own pier at 06:45 and 13:00 for the same fare. Both sell a van from Chumphon train station and the airport as part of the ticket, which is how most people do it, since the piers are out of town.

Check live Chumphon → Koh Tao times and seats on 12Go

If you arrive in the evening, a night ferry leaves at 21:00 and lands at about 05:00. I'd book the station or airport ticket rather than make my own way to the pier.

Off the Night Train

Most people arrive by sleeper from Bangkok. The trains that fit are the late ones, No. 85 from Krung Thep Aphiwat at 19:50, into Chumphon at 03:43, and No. 39 at 22:50, in at 05:22. Lomprayah's and Boonsiri's vans both leave the station at 06:00 for the morning catamarans, and you're on Koh Tao by about 08:30 to 08:45, for ฿900. The earlier sleepers arrive before midnight, which means a night in Chumphon and the same morning van.

If you'd rather sleep in a bed and take the afternoon boat, the vans leave the station at 11:30 (Boonsiri) and 12:00 (Lomprayah) and reach Koh Tao at 14:45 and 15:00. The 07:30 day train from Bangkok arrives at 13:50, after the last van, so it means the night ferry or a night in town. Our Bangkok to Koh Tao guide has every train south.
