Mango Bay

A small bay at Koh Tao's northern tip with coral on both sides, a stop on the round-island snorkeling trips. Easiest by boat from Sairee, since the road in is steep and rough.

Why go, and how to do it well

Mango Bay, Ao Mamuang, is the small bay at Koh Tao's northern tip, the only beach on the island's north coast, with a short strip of sand and a reef running along both sides of the bay. The water is calm and clear, and the snorkeling and diving here are some of the best on the island, which is why every round-island snorkeling trip stops in.

The easy way in is by boat, either one of those day trips or a taxi boat from Sairee. The road over the hill is steep and rough and ends in a long staircase, so I'd only ride it if you're confident on a scooter. Visitors who arrive by land pay about ฿100 at the gate.

Tips for Visiting Beaches

Go Early for Empty Sand

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
