Shark Bay

Shark Bay is one of Koh Samui's more natural and understated coastal spots, valued for its marine life rather than its beach facilities. The waters hold soft corals, abundant fish, and a genuine chance of encountering sea turtles and small sharks in the wild — experiences that set it apart from the island's more polished, resort-heavy beaches. It draws visitors primarily for snorkelling, and the underwater scenery can be rewarding when conditions cooperate. Most visitors arrive as part of an organised snorkelling or diving day trip, which is the practical way to experience the bay. Water clarity is weather-dependent — overcast days can bring murky visibility, while sunny mornings tend to offer the best conditions for spotting marine life. The shoreline has coral fragments and rocks near the water's edge, so water shoes are strongly advised. One practical detail worth knowing before visiting: access to the beach currently runs through the Haad Tien resort, which charges an entry fee of around 200 THB per person. This is a point of frustration for some visitors, as the beach is publicly accessible. Booking through a tour operator — a snorkelling day trip typically covers logistics, transport, and sometimes entry — can be a sensible way to manage both cost and convenience. Sunny morning visits generally yield the clearest water and the best chances of wildlife encounters.
