Bangkok Rings In the New Year on the River
Bangkok's New Year's Eve happens in two places. On the Chao Phraya, ICONSIAM's countdown sets off the city's biggest fireworks along more than a kilometer of river at midnight, and the riverbanks, piers, hotels and cruise boats all face it. In the center, CentralWorld's free countdown fills the plaza and the closed roads around Ratchaprasong with a stage, a crowd of thousands and fireworks over the skyline.
Around those two you can choose a dinner cruise, a rooftop bar, the street party on Khao San Road, or the Thai way of crossing into the new year, chanting overnight at a temple. 31 December 2026 is a Thursday and a public holiday, and 1 January a Friday, so it's a long weekend for Thais as well. Below you'll find where to count down, what each option costs, how the fireworks work, how to get around on the night, where to stay, and what New Year's Eve is like in Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Koh Phangan.

Key Facts for New Year's Eve 2026
31 December 2026 is a Thursday and a public holiday
New Year's Day is a holiday too, so most Thais get a four-day weekend. In 2025 the Cabinet added 2 January as an extra day off; nothing had been announced for 2027 when I wrote this.
The biggest fireworks are on the river at ICONSIAM
The Amazing Thailand Countdown, run with TAT, fires along about 1,400 meters of the Chao Phraya at midnight. Any riverbank with a view of ICONSIAM sees it, for free.
CentralWorld's countdown is free and packed early
In 2025 people started arriving at 17:00 and the shows began at 17:30. Get there by early evening if you want to be near the stage.
Take the MRT or BTS, not a taxi
The MRT ran until 02:00 on New Year's morning 2026, and the roads around CentralWorld closed from the afternoon. Traffic near the river at midnight barely moves.
Book cruises and rooftops now
Dinner cruises for the night start at about ฿2,500 a person, and Sky Bar's 2025 package was ฿24,717. Both sell out, and the rooftop packages are non-refundable.
Riverside hotels cost the most of the year
Rates over New Year run 30–50% above the rest of the high season, and riverside hotels with a fireworks view set minimum stays and prepaid gala dinners.
Where to Count Down in Bangkok
Ranked for the night itself, meaning how good the midnight moment is, what it costs and how easy it is to get home. The first two are the city's official countdowns; the rest are ways to watch them.
1. ICONSIAM and the riverfront, Khlong San, on the river
Best fireworksICONSIAM hosts the Amazing Thailand Countdown with the tourism authority, and its midnight fireworks are the biggest in the country, fired from barges and the riverbank along about 1,400 meters of the Chao Phraya, with drones in 2025. The mall's River Park in front is the closest view, and it fills hours before midnight; in 2025 ICONSIAM also sold paid prime-zone packages. The organizer claimed 1.8 million visitors across the countdown nights, which tells you how crowded it gets.
You don't have to be at ICONSIAM to see it. The fireworks are made to be seen from the river, so any pier, riverside park or hotel terrace with a sightline does the job, often with more room.
- Getting there
- Gold Line from BTS Krung Thon Buri to Charoen Nakhon station, or the free ICONSIAM shuttle boat from Sathorn pier (BTS Saphan Taksin). Expect long lines at both after midnight.
- When to go
- Arrive by 20:00 for a spot by the river. Fireworks at midnight.
2. CentralWorld, Ratchaprasong, Siam
Best free street partyBangkok's big outdoor countdown, on the plaza in front of the mall, with a stage, live acts, a giant countdown screen and fireworks over the skyline at midnight. It's free and it's the closest thing Bangkok has to Times Square. The roads around it close for the night, which turns the whole Ratchaprasong intersection into a crowd.
It gets very full. In 2025 people arrived from 17:00, and near midnight the crowd surged toward the stage and some barriers partly gave way before police restored order. If you go, stay toward the edges, keep your phone zipped away and agree a meeting point.
- Getting there
- BTS Chit Lom or Siam, both a short walk. Ratchadamri Road closed from noon in 2025 and the surrounding roads from 16:00 to 02:00.
- When to go
- From early evening. The countdown stage runs until after midnight.
3. A Chao Phraya dinner cruise, Sathorn pier and the river
Best for couplesA dinner cruise puts you on the water for the fireworks, past the lit-up Grand Palace and Wat Arun on the way. Choose a sailing that's on the river at midnight; some New Year's Eve cruises run in the early evening and dock before the fireworks start. For 2026 resellers list the Chao Phraya Princess from ฿2,500 a person for a 19:30–21:30 dinner, and White Orchid at ฿3,900 for a cruise from 20:30 to 01:00 that includes the fireworks.
- Getting there
- Most boats leave from Asiatique, ICONSIAM or River City. Check the pier on the ticket.
- When to go
- Book by November. The good sailings sell out.
4. Sky Bar and the rooftops, Silom and Sukhumvit
Best splurgeOn New Year's Eve the famous rooftops sell packages rather than entry. Sky Bar at lebua, the open-air bar from The Hangover Part II, charged ฿24,717 a person in 2025 for the night with two glasses of champagne, non-refundable, and the others price theirs at a similar premium. From up there you see fireworks across the city, not only the river show.
Octave at the Marriott Sukhumvit and Vertigo at the Banyan Tree are the other classics. Book weeks ahead, and read what the package includes.
- Getting there
- Sky Bar is at BTS Saphan Taksin; Octave at BTS Thong Lo; Vertigo near MRT Lumphini.
- When to go
- Packages usually go on sale in November.
5. Mahanakhon SkyWalk, Silom
Highest viewThe observation deck on top of King Power Mahanakhon, one of Bangkok's tallest towers, holds a countdown party on New Year's Eve. In 2025 the indoor observatory on the 74th floor opened at 19:00 with a drink included, and from that height you can watch the river show and the fireworks across the city at once. Tickets are sold by the tower, and the price hadn't been published for 2026 when I wrote this.
- Getting there
- BTS Chong Nonsi, connected by a walkway.
- When to go
- Doors around 19:00, fireworks at midnight.
6. Asiatique The Riverfront, Charoen Krung, on the river
Best for familiesThe riverside night market south of the center is a gentler place to see in the new year, with food, shops, the big Ferris wheel and a riverfront promenade that looks up the river toward the fireworks. It's busy but less of a crush than ICONSIAM or CentralWorld, and easier with kids.
- Getting there
- The free Asiatique shuttle boat from Sathorn pier (BTS Saphan Taksin), or a taxi along Charoen Krung early in the evening.
- When to go
- Arrive by 21:00 for a place on the promenade.
7. Khao San Road, Banglamphu, Old City
Cheapest partyThe backpacker street becomes one long party on New Year's Eve, with bars spilling into the road, music from every doorway, street food and cheap buckets. It's free, loud and young, and it doesn't stop at midnight. You won't see the river fireworks properly from here, so come for the party, not the view.
- Getting there
- There's no BTS or MRT nearby; the Chao Phraya Express boat stops at Phra Arthit pier, a short walk away, but check its New Year's hours. Otherwise taxi or tuk-tuk early in the evening.
- When to go
- From about 21:00 until late.
8. Overnight chanting at a temple, Wat Saket, Wat Arun and Wat Pho
The Thai wayMany Thais see in the new year at a temple, chanting with the monks through midnight to start the year with merit. The Department of Religious Affairs runs it nationwide, and in Bangkok the main ceremonies are at Wat Saket (the Golden Mount), Wat Arun and Wat Pho; the government counted more than 12 million people taking part across the country for 2026. Visitors are welcome to sit at the back.
Dress as you would for any temple, with shoulders and knees covered, and on New Year's morning stay for the almsgiving, when people give food to the monks.
- Getting there
- Wat Pho and Wat Arun are on the river, by the Chao Phraya Express piers; Wat Saket is a short taxi from Khao San Road.
- When to go
- The evening of 31 December through midnight, then almsgiving on the morning of 1 January.
The ICONSIAM Fireworks, and Where to Watch for Free
The river show, and the banks that face it
The midnight show at ICONSIAM is the centerpiece of Thailand's official countdown, run each year with the Tourism Authority of Thailand. In 2025 the countdown ran over several nights in late December, with concerts at the mall, and the 31 December show set off eco-friendly fireworks and drones along about 1,400 meters of the river. The 2026 program hadn't been announced when I wrote this; ICONSIAM and TAT usually publish it in December.
Because the show stretches along the river, you can watch it from almost anywhere on the banks between Saphan Taksin and the bend at Asiatique. Locals spread out on the piers, the riverside parks and the walkways along Charoen Krung and Khlong San, and hotel terraces on both banks face the show. Pick your spot by about 21:00, bring water, and plan to walk a while afterward before you try to get on a train or boat.
New Year's Eve on a Dinner Cruise
What it costs, and the timing that matters
A dinner cruise is the easiest way to see the fireworks without fighting a crowd. Boats run from Asiatique, ICONSIAM and River City with a buffet or set dinner, live music and the river's temples lit up on the way. Prices for the night start at about ฿2,500 a person and climb past ฿10,000 on the luxury boats. The thing to check is the time. A boat that sails 19:30–21:30 is home before midnight, so for the fireworks choose one that's out on the water at 00:00, like White Orchid's 20:30–01:00 cruise (฿3,900 for 2026 on resellers' listings).
Getting Around on New Year's Eve
Trains, boats, road closures and getting home
The trains are the only reliable way to move on the night. The MRT ran until 02:00 on New Year's morning 2026, and the BTS ran late too; both announce their New Year's hours in the last week of December. Taxis and Grab are nearly useless near the river and Ratchaprasong close to midnight, with surge prices and gridlock, so if you have to take one, walk ten or fifteen minutes away from the crowd first.
Expect road closures around the countdowns. In 2025 Ratchadamri Road between Pratunam and Ratchaprasong closed from noon on the 31st until 05:00, and Rama I, Ploenchit, Ratchaprarop and Phetchaburi roads around CentralWorld closed from 16:00 to 02:00. The ICONSIAM and Asiatique shuttle boats and the Gold Line get long queues after the fireworks, so either leave just before midnight or wait an hour for the crowds to thin.
Where to Stay for New Year's Eve
Riverside for the fireworks, Siam or Sukhumvit for everything else
If the fireworks are the point, stay on the river. Hotels on both banks between Saphan Taksin and ICONSIAM look straight at the show, and some sell rooms with a river view for the night as a package, but they're the most expensive rooms in the city over New Year and often have minimum stays of three or four nights and a prepaid gala dinner. Book now, and read the festive terms.
Siam and Sukhumvit are the practical choice. You can walk to CentralWorld's countdown or take the BTS, you're near the rooftop bars, and getting home after midnight is a short train ride. Khao San Road and the old city suit the party and the temples, but they're the hardest places to get back to on the night.
New Year's Eve Elsewhere in Thailand
Beach countdowns, the north and the Full Moon island
Bangkok has the biggest show, but every tourist town counts down, and the beaches do it barefoot. Here's what to expect in the main places.
Phuket
Patong is the loudest place on the island, with Bangla Road and the beach packed and fireworks going up all along the sand at midnight. The big resorts on the west coast hold their own fireworks and gala dinners, which many make compulsory for guests staying that night, so check before you book. For a calmer night, Kata and Karon have beach fireworks without the Patong crowds.
Pattaya
Pattaya stages one of Thailand's biggest beach countdowns. In 2025 the Pattaya Countdown ran on Pattaya Beach from 29 to 31 December with concerts from 16:00 each day and fireworks at midnight on the 31st, all free. It's two hours from Bangkok by road, which makes it an easy escape from the city crowds.
Koh Phangan
Haad Rin holds a New Year's Eve party on 31 December 2026 on top of the Full Moon Party a week earlier, on 24 December. It's the same beach party with a countdown, and ferries from Samui and rooms near Haad Rin sell out for both.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai counts down in the old city, with crowds around Tha Phae Gate and the moat, and the cool night air is a welcome change from the south. People release sky lanterns at midnight, but releases are restricted near the airport and the rules change from year to year, so follow the provincial notice in late December rather than an old blog post.
Staying Safe on the Night
Crowds, fireworks and the roads
The countdowns are good-natured, but the crowds are huge. Stay at the edges of the big gatherings rather than pushing toward the stage, agree a meeting point in case phones die or networks jam, and keep your wallet and phone zipped away, since packed crowds are where pickpockets work. Stay well back from fireworks set off on beaches and in the street.
The week around New Year is one of the most dangerous on Thai roads, with heavy drinking and holiday traffic, and the government runs a road-safety campaign over it every year. Don't ride a scooter after a night out, and don't get on one with a driver who's been drinking.
