Koh Phangan to Bangkok

Off the island by boat, then a bus, a train or a plane to the capital

By Mac Kiley · 6 min read · Updated Oct 26, 2026

Pick the Way Back by Where You Need to Be

Koh Phangan has no airport, so every trip to Bangkok starts with a boat from Thong Sala pier. After that there are three ways to go. By boat and bus on one ticket, Lomprayah's 08:30 reaches Khao San Road at 20:30 for ฿1,350. By boat, bus and flight via Surat Thani, the 08:00 boat connects with a Thai Lion Air flight landing at Don Mueang at 15:40, and 12Go sells the whole thing for about ฿2,000–2,300, not much more than the bus.

Check live Koh Phangan → Bangkok times and seats on 12Go

Overnight, an afternoon ferry meets a night bus to Khao San or a sleeper train, arriving at dawn for ฿810–1,900. For an international flight home the same day, fly from Samui, where Bangkok Airways goes to Suvarnabhumi about 20 times a day. If I didn't have a flight to catch, I'd take the Surat Thani combination and have the evening in Bangkok.

The day after the Full Moon is the busiest at Thong Sala

Book your boat when you book the trip out, and don't plan a flight from Bangkok the same day.

October to December is the Gulf's rough season

Boats can be delayed or cancelled for a day or two, so leave a spare day before an international flight.

Boat and Bus on One Ticket

Lomprayah's 08:30 catamaran from Thong Sala crosses to Chumphon on the mainland, where its coach takes over for the drive north, and it reaches Khao San Road or Pinklao at 20:30, for ฿1,350, or ฿1,650 for the roomier VIP coach. Its 13:00 boat reaches Khao San at 00:45. Boonsiri runs the same idea, leaving at 08:45 and arriving at Khao San at 20:30, or at 13:15 and arriving at 01:00, for ฿1,350.

The same 08:30 Lomprayah boat also connects with a bus to Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport, arriving at 23:00, for ฿1,850, and Boonsiri sells a Suvarnabhumi ticket for about ฿1,600. That's only useful for a flight the next morning, so for anything earlier, fly.

Boat, Bus and Flight via Surat Thani

Surat Thani's airport has cheap flights to Bangkok, and 12Go sells them with the boat and the bus to the airport on one ticket. On a November weekday, Lomprayah's 08:00 boat with a Thai Lion Air flight landed at Don Mueang at 15:40 for about ฿2,300, Phantip's 05:30 made the same flight for about ฿2,000, and Seatran's 11:30 connected with flights landing at Don Mueang at 20:00 or Suvarnabhumi at 20:05 for about ฿2,200. That's ฿650–950 more than the bus, and you're in Bangkok about five hours sooner.

You can also book the pieces yourself. Raja's 05:00 ferry and bus reach Surat Thani airport at 10:00 for ฿600, and Lomprayah's 08:00 and 11:00 reach it at 11:30 and 15:00. Flights to Bangkok cost from about ฿1,300, and the last ones leave between 18:40 and 20:00. Our Surat Thani to Koh Phangan guide has every boat.

Flying From Koh Samui

Samui is the airport for a same-day international flight, because Bangkok Airways flies from there to Suvarnabhumi about 20 times a day, and three times to Don Mueang, in 50 to 75 minutes, from about ฿2,800 and more than ฿6,000 in peak weeks. Boats from Thong Sala to Bangrak, the pier ten minutes from Samui's airport, run from 07:30, and Lomprayah sells a ticket straight to the terminal for ฿500 that gets you there about an hour after sailing. Allow 2.5 hours from the boat's arrival at Bangrak to your flight.

It costs more than Surat Thani, but the flights are frequent and land at Suvarnabhumi, where most international flights leave. Our Koh Phangan to Koh Samui and Koh Samui to Bangkok guides have every boat and flight.

Overnight by Bus or Sleeper Train

If you'd rather keep the day, take an afternoon ferry and sleep on the way. Raja's 14:00 car ferry and Seatran's 14:30 connect with night buses that reach Khao San Road, Ratchadamnoen Avenue or the Southern Bus Terminal at about 04:30 to 06:00, for about ฿810–1,500 depending on the seller and the bus.

The train is the more comfortable night. The 14:30 boat is also sold with a transfer to Surat Thani's Phun Phin station and a seat or berth on a night train, arriving at Krung Thep Aphiwat at about 08:00, for about ฿940–1,920 depending on the class. Nine trains a day head north from Phun Phin between 18:25 and 23:28, so if you book the train yourself, a berth on one of the evening expresses is the one to aim for.

After the Full Moon Party, and Making a Flight Home

The morning after a Full Moon Party is the busiest of the month at Thong Sala, with the boats full, and there's no Grab on the island, so allow time for a songthaew to the pier. Book your boat when you book the trip out. For an international flight from Bangkok, I'd leave Phangan the day before, or at least take an early boat to Samui and fly straight to Suvarnabhumi with a few hours spare. The boat-and-bus tickets arrive too late for an evening flight, and in the Gulf's rough season from October to December a cancelled boat can cost you a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Koh Phangan to Bangkok.

Take Lomprayah's 08:30 boat and bus to Khao San (20:30, ฿1,350), a boat-bus-flight ticket via Surat Thani to Don Mueang (15:40 on the 08:00 boat, about ฿2,000–2,300), a boat to Samui and a Bangkok Airways flight, or an afternoon ferry with a night bus or sleeper train.

No. Every ticket sold as a ferry to Bangkok is a boat to Chumphon, Donsak or Surat Thani plus a bus, train or flight. Lomprayah's and Boonsiri's boat-and-bus tickets are the closest thing to one trip.

About 12 hours by boat and bus, about 7 to 8 hours by boat, bus and flight via Surat Thani, 4 to 5 hours via Samui if the connections line up, and about 14 to 18 hours overnight by bus or train.

Not from Phangan, which has no airport. Take a boat to Samui and fly Bangkok Airways, about 20 flights a day to Suvarnabhumi from about ฿2,800, or a boat and bus to Surat Thani airport, where flights to Don Mueang start from about ฿1,300.

An afternoon ferry and night bus to Khao San, from about ฿810 on 12Go. The boat-bus-flight tickets via Surat Thani, about ฿2,000–2,300, cost less than you'd expect and save most of a day.

Yes, from Surat Thani. The 14:30 ferry is sold with a transfer to Phun Phin station and a night train arriving at Krung Thep Aphiwat at about 08:00, for about ฿940–1,920 depending on the class.

Yes, by flying. Take a morning boat to Samui and a Bangkok Airways flight to Suvarnabhumi, or the 08:00 boat-bus-flight ticket to Don Mueang, landing at 15:40. The boat-and-bus tickets reach the airports at 23:00, which only works for a next-morning flight.

About 700 km by road from Donsak pier, after a 2.5-hour ferry from Thong Sala. The flight from Samui takes 50 to 75 minutes, and from Surat Thani about 1 hour 15.
