Taraburee

4.4(1,411 reviews)$$$$

Taraburee is a raft restaurant moored along Songkwai Road in central Kanchanaburi, offering a distinct dining experience directly on the River Kwai. The floating setting gives the venue a relaxed, open-air atmosphere that standard town restaurants cannot match, and the unobstructed water views make it a popular stop for both passing travellers and local diners. Live music occasionally features in the evenings, with solo performers adding to the unhurried riverside mood.

The menu centres on authentic local Thai cuisine, with Tom Yum and fried fish among the regularly ordered dishes. Flavours are generally well-regarded by visitors, with several reviewers highlighting the freshness of ingredients and depth of seasoning. Quieter periods — particularly weekday afternoons — tend to deliver the most attentive service and the most comfortable dining experience. It is worth noting that some dishes have drawn mixed feedback on portion size relative to price, so expectations are worth calibrating accordingly.

Taraburee (ธาราบุรี) is a wonderful riverside vibe restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. Authentic Local Thai cuisine. Every dish is full of flavor and fresh. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients. The owner is Amazing and full of fun, the staff are friendly, attentive, and provide excellent service They make you feel welcome and well taken care of throughout the meal. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy great food good riverside in Karnchanaburi, Taraburee is a fantastic choice. Highly recommended!

Raft restaurant with a lovely few on the river. Live music was nice, solo performer with Neil Young repertoire. Food: Fried fish was okay, but small for its price, Tom Yum was richly filled with seafood, the taste was strong. Pad Khao Phu, the crab was maybe in the river, found nothing in the rice. Staff: We came early in the late afternoon, about 5 pm. A lot of staff present, you sipp a bit of your coke, and they rush to fill your glasses up. We had the Tom Yum served without any bowl and spoon, we had to ask the waitress two times for it and she gave us an disturbed look. No thank you or goodbye after our dinner. My conclusion is that some of the staff could be a bit more service minded.

The river setting is really nice, so the atmosphere is very nice. The staff did fine, nothing unusually good or bad, so no complaints there. It’s just that the food was… not great. The catfish chu-chi curry was a bit weak in flavor and didn’t have enough sauce, and the catfish fried in fish sauce was terrible. The fish is honestly too small to serve it like the usual mackerel version, but too big to be eaten whole like the tiny fish. It was all bone and skin, and fried hard as a rock. Overall it was a nice view, and nice location - but the food was disappointing and there are better options nearby.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
