Wat Chai Chumphon Chana Songkhram

4.6(923 reviews)

Officially recognised as a third-class royal temple, Wat Chai Chumphon Chana Songkhram — commonly known as Wat Tai — sits along the Mae Klong River in Ban Tai, Mueang Kanchanaburi. Its most striking feature is a gigantic sculpture of a boat carrying a Buddha statue, a piece of religious art that sets it apart from many other temples in the region. Ornate buildings, large-scale sculptures, and beautifully maintained grounds make this a visually compelling site for those interested in Thai Buddhist art and architecture. The atmosphere here shifts meaningfully depending on when you visit. On ordinary days the temple offers the calm and quiet typical of an active place of worship, where local devotees come to pray and observe daily religious life. During festivals such as Songkran, the grounds come alive with energy, drawing large crowds of worshippers and creating a genuinely immersive cultural experience. Either way, the combination of impressive scale and authentic devotional activity gives the temple a character that rewards unhurried exploration. As with all Thai temples, visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees before entering. The temple has an active Facebook page where announcements and updates are occasionally posted, which is worth checking ahead of a visit. Given its location within Mueang Kanchanaburi District, it pairs well with other cultural and historical sites in the area and can be incorporated into a broader day of sightseeing along the Mae Klong River.

Visitor Reviews

Wat Chai Chumphon Chana Songkhram (also known as Wat Tai) is a peaceful riverside temple in Ban Tai, Mueang Kanchanaburi, along the Mae Klong River. It is officially recognized as a third-class royal temple in the Maha Nikaya order (designated on 20 November 1978), while local history describes the site as much older, likely linked to the late Ayutthaya period. During my visit, friendly young monks welcomed me kindly, which made the atmosphere feel especially warm and respectful. A meaningful cultural stop in Kanchanaburi.

What a fantastic place. Gigantic statue of a boat carrying a Buddha statue. Impressive art in every way possible. I have been to many temples in Thailand and this place absolutely have my highest recommendations. If you ever go to Kanchanaburi you have to go here !

Visited during SongKran 2025. Buzzing with energy and intention. Lots of devotees and locals there, beautiful buildings and environment and huge sculptures. Well worth the visit.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
