Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting? Yes, If You Want a Comfortable Island
Yes, Koh Samui is worth visiting, as long as you know what kind of island it is. Samui is a comfortable resort island, not a castaway one. It has good beaches, an airport with direct flights from Bangkok, the strongest line-up of honeymoon and wellness resorts in Thailand, easy boat days to Ang Thong Marine Park, and Koh Phangan and Koh Tao a short ferry away. It's also one of the more expensive places in the country, mostly because of the flight, and Chaweng, the busiest beach, is built up and commercial.
Its calendar is the opposite of Phuket's. The Gulf's rains fall from October to December, which makes Samui the best island choice in Thailand's summer. Below is who will love Koh Samui and who should go elsewhere, the downsides and how to get around them, what a day costs, and a month-by-month verdict.

Koh Samui in Six Facts
The flight is quick but not cheap
Bangkok Airways flies from Suvarnabhumi around 30 times a day in a little over an hour, for ฿2,800–6,800 one way with a checked bag. The cheaper route is a budget flight to Surat Thani, ฿1,000–2,000, then a bus and ferry, ฿1,500–3,000 in total and 5–7 hours door to door.
February to April is the best season
February is the driest month, about 64 mm of rain on 4 days. November is the wettest, at around 445 mm on 16 days, and October to December is the rainy season. May to September stays fairly dry when the Andaman coast is wet.
It's one of the pricier islands
A budget day runs about ฿1,600 and a mid-range day about ฿4,500, against ฿1,500 and ฿4,000 in Phuket and ฿1,200 and ฿3,200 on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.
A ring road runs all the way around
The island is about an hour's drive around on a ring road of roughly 50 km. Songthaews cost ฿50–100, Grab works in Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut but costs more than on the mainland, and scooters rent for ฿200–300 a day.
The boat days are the highlight
Ang Thong Marine Park's 42 islands cost ฿1,200–2,500 by tour plus a ฿300 park fee, and the park closes from 1 November to 15 December. Koh Phangan is 20–50 minutes away for ฿200–500, and Koh Tao about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Four to five days is the right length
That gives you two beach days, Ang Thong, the Big Buddha and Fisherman's Village on a Friday night. A week leaves room for a day on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, or for doing nothing at a resort.
Who Will Love Koh Samui
Samui suits travelers who want the beach and the comfort together. These are the people it works best for.
Couples and honeymooners
Samui holds Thailand's deepest bench of honeymoon hotels, from hillside pool villas at Banyan Tree and the Conrad on the quiet southwest to SALA's villas at Choeng Mon and adults-only boutiques in Bophut. Fisherman's Village in Bophut, with its Friday Walking Street from 17:00, is the island's most romantic evening.
Families
Samui's logistics are the easiest of any Thai island for children. The airport is ten or fifteen minutes from Chaweng and Bophut, the resorts are built for families, and beach days mix easily with the Big Buddha, the waterfall at Na Muang and a boat day to Ang Thong. Pick the calm north coast, Choeng Mon, where the water deepens gradually, or Bophut, and add Pig Island by longtail, a short, calm crossing to a beach with actual pigs.
Wellness and retreat travelers
Samui is Thailand's wellness capital, with Kamalaya, Samahita, Vikasa and Absolute Sanctuary all on the island, and a spa or massage on every beach road. If the trip is about resetting rather than sightseeing, this is the island to choose.
Anyone traveling between May and September
This is when Phuket, Krabi and the rest of the Andaman coast are in their monsoon. Samui's summer months average around 100–135 mm of rain on 10 or 11 days, the seas are generally calm, and it's the one big Thai beach that works for a July or August holiday.
Island hoppers who want a comfortable base
Samui is the hub for the Gulf islands. Koh Phangan is 20–50 minutes away for the Full Moon Party or a quieter beach, and Koh Tao, Thailand's diving island, is about 1.5 to 2 hours by fast boat. Many travelers start on Samui and finish on one of the others.
Who Should Skip Koh Samui, or Stay Somewhere Else
Samui isn't the wrong choice for these travelers so much as the wrong default. Each has a better fit nearby.
You're on a tight budget
The flight is the problem more than the island. Bangkok Airways has a near-monopoly on Samui's airport, so fares start high, and resorts here cost more than on Krabi. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao run about ฿1,200 a budget day against Samui's ฿1,600, and if you do want Samui, the Surat Thani route halves the cost of getting there.
You can only travel between October and December
This is the Gulf's rainy season, and November is the wettest month of the year on Samui, with Ang Thong closed from 1 November to 15 December. In these months the Andaman coast is the better bet, with Phuket and Krabi drying out from November.
You want a wild, undeveloped island
Samui is developed, with malls, a ring road and traffic in Chaweng. For something rawer, Koh Phangan is cheaper and wilder half an hour away, and Koh Chang has jungle and lower prices on the eastern Gulf.
The Honest Downsides, and How to Get Around Them
The complaints about Koh Samui I see repeated come down to five things, and each has a fix.
The cost of getting there
Flights from Bangkok cost ฿2,800–6,800 one way, several times the fare to Phuket or Krabi. Book early, or fly a budget airline to Surat Thani for ฿1,000–2,000 and take a combined bus and ferry ticket from the arrivals hall, with the last combos leaving around 16:00. The overnight bus with a ferry connection is cheaper still, if you don't mind the 12 hours or more.
Chaweng feels built up
Chaweng is the island's busiest beach, with bars, shopping and traffic, and the reviews that call Samui commercial are mostly describing it. Stay in Bophut or Lamai for a calmer base with good food, Maenam for value, Choeng Mon for a quiet resort bay, or the west coast for sunsets, and visit Chaweng for a night out.
Getting around isn't cheap
Taxis and songthaews set their prices, and Grab costs more than on the mainland, ฿200–600 for a trip across the island. Agree a songthaew fare before you get in, base yourself where you can walk to dinner, and if you rent a scooter for ฿200–300 a day, ride carefully, because the ring road is busy and most travel insurance excludes motorbike accidents.
The weather turns from October
From October to December heavy rain and rough seas arrive, rip currents form on the east-coast beaches at Chaweng and Lamai, and some lower roads can flood. If your dates fall then, keep Ang Thong for the drier days if it's open, swim only where the flags allow it, and consider Phuket or Krabi instead.
Crowds at the famous sights
The Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem fill with tour vans from about 09:30. Go at 08:00 and you'll have them almost to yourself, and keep the Secret Buddha Garden and the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks for the afternoon.

How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself
Four to five days is the right length. Spend two on the beach, one on Ang Thong, and one on the Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, Na Muang and Fisherman's Village, ideally on a Friday. With a week, add a day trip to Koh Tao or two nights on Koh Phangan.
Where you stay sets the tone of the trip. Chaweng, about ฿2,000–4,500 a night mid-range, is for nightlife and the long beach. Bophut, ฿2,500–5,000, is the all-round pick, with Fisherman's Village and the ferry piers close by. Lamai, ฿1,500–3,500, is a calmer, cheaper version of Chaweng. Maenam, ฿1,000–2,500, is the quiet value base on the north coast. Choeng Mon, ฿3,000–7,000, is for resort bays five or ten minutes from the airport, and Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam on the west coast, ฿1,500–6,000, are for sunsets and seclusion 40–50 minutes from it. The where-to-stay guide has each area in detail.
If Not Koh Samui, Then Where?
If something above put you off, one of these is probably the trip you're actually looking for.
Phuket, for the months Samui is wet
Pick by month. Phuket is best from November to March and Samui from April to September, and neither is at its best in October. From January to March, when both are dry, Phuket wins on choice and Samui on calm. See Phuket vs Koh Samui.
Koh Phangan, for a cheaper, wilder island
Phangan has the Full Moon Party at one end and yoga-retreat calm at the other. It's cheaper and wilder, half an hour away, and the better island if you don't need a resort. See Koh Samui vs Koh Phangan.
Plan the trip.
