Noo Beer

4.9(439 reviews)$$$$

Noo Beer is a tiny, unassuming Thai eatery in the Maret district of Koh Samui, run single-handedly by an elderly woman who cooks every dish from scratch to order. That personal touch translates directly onto the plate — visitor after visitor singles out the shrimp paste fried rice and panang curry as standout dishes, and the consistently high praise across hundreds of reviews suggests this is the kind of place that earns genuine loyalty rather than passing tourist traffic. The atmosphere is casual and no-frills, with a local clientele that gives it an authenticity hard to find closer to Koh Samui's busier tourist strips. Because one person handles both the cooking and serving, the pace is unhurried and meals take time to arrive — but reviewers consistently describe that wait as worthwhile. It suits travellers who are happy to slow down and eat the way residents of the island actually eat. A practical note worth keeping in mind: the restaurant operates Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and is closed on Sundays. Since it is a solo operation with limited capacity, arriving early — particularly for lunch — is a sensible approach, especially during busier travel periods. There is no website or advance booking option available, so walk-ins are the only option. Visitors staying in or passing through the southern part of Koh Samui will find it a rewarding detour for a budget-friendly, home-style Thai meal.

Visitor Reviews

A small restaurant serviced by a lovely old lady. She serves and cooks everything from scratch, so the food may take a while, but when it comes, you are in for a treat; real authentic delicious thai food. It doesn’t matter you’re near a busy road, it doesn’t matter that the furniture doesn’t match, but WHAT matters is the service and food…..been here twice and both times top grub. You’ll be mad if you side step this experience.

Wanted to gatekeep this because grandma cooks soooo good 🤍 The shrimp paste fried rice and panang curry are next level. It might take a while since she prepares everything on her own, but honestly, so worth the wait. Definitely making this my once-a-week lunch spot!

Absolutely amazing! The grandma is adorable and her food is the best we had in Thailand. Truly unforgettable. ♥️🇹🇭A must-visit if you’re in the area! 👌🏽♥️

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
