Visa Run From Koh Samui
Malaysia by van and ferry, or Singapore by air, and the ฿1,900 extension in Mae Nam before either
A visa run from Koh Samui means Malaysia, because the nearest open border is in Satun or Songkhla, a ferry and five hours of road away. Agency vans do it as one long day, leaving around 03:30 and getting you home between 17:30 and 21:00, while on your own by public transport it takes a night in Hat Yai. Land entries on the visa exemption are capped at two a calendar year, so before you go, try the ฿1,900 extension at Samui Immigration in Mae Nam, which adds 30 days without leaving. The rules behind all this are in our Thailand visa run guide.

The short answer
From Koh Samui, the only same-day visa run is an agency van to the Satun border with Malaysia, about ฿4,200–4,500 as agencies publish it. On your own, take the 05:00–06:45 ferry-and-bus combinations to Hat Yai and cross at Sadao, with one night in Hat Yai. Extend first for ฿1,900 in Mae Nam.
- Nearest open crossing
- Malaysia, at Sadao (via Hat Yai) or the Satun border
- Same day
- Agency van only, about 14–17.5 hours door to door
- On your own
- ฿570–690 each way to Hat Yai, one night there
- Fly instead
- Nonstop to Singapore, about four a day
- Extend first
- Samui Immigration, 333 Maenam Road Soi 1, ฿1,900
- Every re-entry needs
- A new TDAC
The rules, the other bases and the extension, step by step.
Every Visa Run From Koh Samui, Compared
| Run | How | Time door to door | Same day? | Fares on your own | Agency price (as published) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extend at Mae Nam instead | Samui Immigration, 333 Maenam Road Soi 1 | Most of a morning | Yes | ฿1,900 fee | Not needed | Adds 30 days and uses none of your land entries |
| Satun border (Wang Prachan–Wang Kelian) | Agency van and two ferries via Donsak | About 14–17.5 hours | Yes, agency only | No public route (taxis only, ฿7,900–8,900 a car) | About ฿4,200–4,500 all in | Malaysian side reported both open and restricted, ask the agency |
| Sadao–Bukit Kayu Hitam via Hat Yai | Ferry-and-bus combo to Hat Yai, then about 60 km by road | About 9 hours to Hat Yai, back the next day | No, one night in Hat Yai | ฿570–690 to Hat Yai, ฿490–840 back, Sadao vans from ฿247 | None found | Open, the crossing most guides use |
| Overnight in Penang | Through van via Sadao, or an agency trip | Two days, one night | No | ฿1,250–1,570 out, ฿1,250–1,942 back | About ฿4,500–4,800 with a night | Crosses at Sadao, so it uses a land entry |
| Fly to Singapore | Nonstop from Samui airport, about 2 hours | A few days, by choice | Possible, rarely sensible | Check the airlines | Not applicable | No land cap, but repeat runs are screened |
| Ranong into Myanmar | Private taxi (no bus listed) | 6.5–9 hours each way | No | ฿7,500–9,000 a car each way | None found | Not practical from Samui |
Ferry, bus and van fares and times are from 12Go's public route pages and the agencies' own published itineraries. Agency prices move, and one listing quotes ฿2,300 before a separate ฿1,900 "border fee", so ask for the total. Malaysia needs the free MDAC arrival card before you cross.
The Agency Day Run to the Satun Border
The same-day run every Samui agency sells goes to the Wang Prachan checkpoint in Satun's Khuan Don district, opposite Wang Kelian in Malaysia. The published itineraries are close to identical. A van picks you up between 03:30 and 04:45, the 05:00 ferry leaves Nathon or Lipa Noi for Donsak, and a minivan drives you south to arrive between 11:00 and 11:30. You get stamped out of Thailand, walk a short way to the Malaysian windows to be stamped in and straight back out, and walk back for a new 30-day Thai stamp. The van leaves around 12:00 to 13:00 for the afternoon or evening ferry, and you're home between 17:30 and 21:00.
Agencies run it three to five days a week. Published prices are ฿4,200 and ฿4,500 all in, and one listing shows ฿2,300 with a ฿1,900 "border fee" excluded, which comes to the same ฿4,200. Ask what the price covers before you pay.
The Malaysian side of this crossing is the part I can't confirm. A Krabi operator wrote in mid-2025 that Malaysia had started requiring an overnight stay for quick over-and-back runs and stopped its own service. A Satun travel blog said in February 2026 that Wang Kelian was open only to local residents while a collapsed road was repaired. A border-crossing guide updated in October 2026 says it's open for border runs, and Samui agencies were still advertising trips in September. Before you book, ask the agency whether it is crossing at Satun or Sadao that week, and whether you enter Malaysia or stay at the line.
There is no public transport to the Satun border from Samui. 12Go lists only private taxis to Satun, seven to nine hours for ฿7,900–8,900 a car, so on your own the road goes to Sadao instead.
No run is guaranteed. The Thai stamp on the way back is at the officer's discretion, and an agency can't promise it.
On Your Own, Hat Yai and Sadao
The public way is two days with a night in Hat Yai. The ferry-and-bus combinations leave early and all arrive mid-afternoon. Raja Ferry's tickets leave Lipa Noi at 05:00 or 05:30 and reach Hat Yai at 15:00 for ฿570–590, Phantip's leaves at 06:15 for ฿690, and Faiz Travel's leaves at 06:45 and arrives at 14:20 for ฿600. There's also an 11:00 Raja departure that gets in at 19:00.
The Sadao checkpoint is about 60 km south of Hat Yai, an hour by road. 12Go lists bus-and-van connections to Sadao from 07:00 to 19:00 from ฿247, and taxis from about ฿960. The Malaysian side at Bukit Kayu Hitam is generally open from 06:00 to midnight Malaysian time, which is 05:00 to 23:00 in Thailand, so if your bus is on time you can cross the evening you arrive. Malaysia is an hour ahead, and you'll need the MDAC filed before you get there and a new TDAC for the way back.
Coming back, every departure leaves Hat Yai in the morning. P Plus Express leaves at 07:30 and reaches Samui at 15:30 for ฿650, Nakhonborrikarn leaves at 08:00 and arrives at 16:30 for ฿490, and Phantip's van and ferry leaves at 08:30 for Nathon at 15:30, ฿840 booked online. If you cross the morning after you arrive, you've missed them and it's a second night.
I'd take a taxi or van to Sadao rather than the train to Padang Besar. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel on the Hat Yai to Padang Besar train line, which can matter for your travel insurance, and Sadao district isn't on its list.

The Overnight Penang Run
Penang is the run for people who'd rather have a night in George Town than a 17-hour day. Through vans leave Samui at 06:30 for ฿1,250 and at 07:00 from Nathon for ฿1,570, crossing at Sadao and reaching Penang in the evening. Coming back, they leave George Town between 04:30 and 05:15 and reach Samui between 16:00 and 20:00, for ฿1,250–1,942. Agencies sell the whole thing with a hotel night for about ฿4,500–4,800.
Older guides call this the run for a new tourist visa from the Thai consulate in Penang. That no longer works in one night. The consulate's own page says every visa application has gone through the online e-Visa system since 8 October 2024, that you apply through Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Kota Bharu based on where you are in Malaysia, and that processing takes about five to seven days. An overnight trip gets you a new 30-day exemption stamp at Sadao on the way back, the same as a bounce. A tourist visa means about a week in Malaysia.
Both directions cross at Sadao, so coming back into Thailand counts as one of your two land entries.
Flying Out From Samui Instead
Samui airport has one useful nonstop for a run, Singapore. Bangkok Airways and Scoot each fly it about twice a day, around two hours, according to schedule data. There's no nonstop from Samui to Kuala Lumpur or Penang, and Surat Thani airport on the mainland has no international flights at all, so Kuala Lumpur means connecting through Bangkok or Singapore.
Flying back in doesn't use up a land entry, but the November 2025 screening applies at airports too, so a passport with several short runs in it gets the same questions either way. A few days in Singapore with a return flight at least looks like what it is, a short trip.

From Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
From Koh Phangan the run is the same, a little earlier. Raja Ferry and Phantip's combinations leave Thong Sala at 05:00 and 05:30 and reach Hat Yai at 15:00 for ฿610–664, and some Samui agencies pick up on Phangan for the Satun day, timed to the ferry. Phangan has its own immigration office for the extension, at 13/47 Moo 2.
From Koh Tao it's a night boat. The 21:00 sleeper boat-and-van tickets reach Hat Yai between 11:00 and 12:30 the next day for ฿1,000–1,150, or the 09:45 catamaran and van gets there at 20:15 for ฿1,758. Koh Tao has an immigration unit in the district office, but it doesn't publish what it handles, so call 077 456 947 before planning the extension around it.
The Extension at Samui Immigration in Mae Nam
Samui Immigration is at 333 Maenam Road, Soi 1, Moo 1 in Mae Nam on the north coast, phone 077 423 440. Older guides put it in Nathon, but Surat Thani Immigration's own contact page gives the Mae Nam address. It has been in Mae Nam since August 2018, according to Surat Thani Immigration's history page, and it opens Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 16:30 with a lunch hour, so call before a public holiday or a Friday afternoon visit. Our Koh Samui Immigration Office guide has the details.
Bring your passport, a completed TM.7 form, one 4×6 cm photo and ฿1,900 in cash. Visa services on the island also advise copies of your passport pages and proof of where you're staying, and allowing most of a morning in high season. Samui and Phangan are both on the online e-Extension system, so you can apply at thaiextension.vfsevisa.com first, for ฿1,900 plus a ฿500 service fee, and visit only to collect the stamp. The extension adds 30 days to your stamp, it's at the officer's discretion, and you have to apply before the date on the stamp. Our visa requirements guide covers the form and the fee.
What to Bring on a Run From Samui
A passport with six months left
Thai entry needs six months' validity, and a Malaysian bounce adds four stamps.
The MDAC and a new TDAC
Malaysia's free arrival card goes in online within three days before you arrive. The Thai TDAC is single-use, so file a new one for the way back.
An onward ticket out of Thailand
The officer can ask to see travel out within 30 days. A cheap ticket out, saved on your phone, answers that.
Proof of funds the officer may ask for
TAT lists ฿10,000 per person or ฿20,000 per family for certain visa-exempt entries, and the Royal Thai Embassy pages give ฿20,000 per person or ฿40,000 per family. Carry cash or bank statements, and don't count on a card or app balance being accepted.
The Two-a-Year Rule, in Short
Visa-exempt entries over a land border are capped at two per calendar year since 15 September 2026, and the Satun day run, Sadao on your own and the Penang trip all come back over land. Flying back from Singapore has no written cap, but immigration screens anyone who has done more than two runs without a reason, at airports as well as borders. Our Thailand visa run guide sets out the rules and what the embassies say about them. If you want most of the year on Samui, a run is the wrong tool, and the Destination Thailand Visa or an education visa is the right one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Visa Run From Koh Samui.
Only with an agency. The vans leave around 03:30, take the 05:00 ferry to Donsak, reach the Satun border with Malaysia around 11:00 to 11:30 and get you home between 17:30 and 21:00. On public transport the last buses back from Hat Yai leave in the morning, so it takes a night there.
The ฿1,900 extension at Samui Immigration in Mae Nam, which buys 30 days without leaving. For an actual run, Sadao on your own costs about ฿570–690 each way to Hat Yai, a van or taxi to the border and a night in Hat Yai. The agency day runs are about ฿4,200–4,500 as published.
There's no public bus or boat that does it. Agencies run vans to the Satun border via the Donsak ferry, and 12Go lists only private taxis to Satun town, seven to nine hours for ฿7,900–8,900 a car.
Reports conflict. A Krabi operator said in 2025 that Malaysia required an overnight stay for quick turnarounds, a Satun blog said in February 2026 that Wang Kelian was open only to locals during road repairs, and a crossing guide updated in October 2026 says it's open. Samui agencies were still running trips in September. Ask the agency which crossing it's using the week you go.
At 333 Maenam Road, Soi 1, Moo 1 in Mae Nam, on the north coast, phone 077 423 440. It moved from Nathon, where older guides still place it. Koh Phangan has its own office at 13/47 Moo 2.
Not overnight. The Thai consulate in Penang takes applications only through the online e-Visa system, from people who are in Malaysia, and says processing takes about five to seven days. An overnight Penang trip gets you a new 30-day exemption stamp at the border, not a visa.
Not nonstop. Samui's international nonstops are Singapore, about four a day on Bangkok Airways and Scoot, and Hong Kong. Kuala Lumpur and Penang mean a connection, and Surat Thani airport has no international flights.
Not practically. 12Go lists no bus from Samui to Ranong, only private taxis of six and a half to nine hours for ฿7,500–9,000 a car each way, and the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the Kawthaung side.
Plan on two. Every overland run from Samui comes back over a land border, and those are capped at two visa-exempt entries a calendar year. Flying back from Singapore isn't capped, but immigration screens repeat runs at airports too.
Yes. The card covers one entry, so file a new one at tdac.immigration.go.th within three days before you come back into Thailand. Malaysia needs its own MDAC before you cross the other way.
