The short answer
Go to Samui Immigration in Mae Nam for a 30-day tourist extension or anything else, not to Nathon, where the office used to be. It's closed on weekends and public holidays, and Samui is one of the places where you can apply for the extension online first and visit only for the stamp. Staying on Phangan or Koh Tao, use your own island's office.

Addresses, phones, opening dates and the airport unit's duties are from Surat Thani Immigration's website, which gives provincial hours of 08:30 to 16:30 and no separate hours for the island units. Samui and Phangan hours with the lunch break are from their Google listings. The Immigration Bureau's handbooks say you apply at the immigration office where you live.
The Office in Mae Nam
Samui Immigration is a unit of Surat Thani Provincial Immigration, whose headquarters is on the mainland near Surat Thani town. Its building on Maenam Road Soi 1 opened on 18 August 2018, according to the provincial office's history page, and it's the island's office for every visa service. The address is the one on Surat Thani Immigration's contact page and on the e-Extension list.
Google's listing shows a free parking lot, a paid one, and a wheelchair-accessible entrance.
Getting to Mae Nam
Mae Nam is on Samui's north coast, with Bophut and Fisherman's Village to the east and Nathon to the west, and the office sits down Soi 1 off the main road. Lomprayah's boats from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao land at Pralarn pier in Mae Nam, and a Koh Tao travel agency's directions put the office 3.9 km from that pier, turning off the main road at a FamilyMart. From Chaweng, Lamai or the airport, a Grab or Bolt drops you at the gate, and the shared songthaews run along the ring road through Mae Nam by day, so tell the driver Soi 1 or get off at the soi and walk.
Inside, and How the Queue Works
A local guide to the office describes a reception desk on the ground floor where staff check your papers and give you a queue number, with separate queues for tourist and short-term matters and for long-term ones, and the officers who handle your application upstairs. There's a photo and photocopy room in the building, and a small coffee spot for the wait.
The Immigration Bureau's handbook puts the work on a tourist extension at 40 minutes from the moment your documents are complete. The wait for your number comes on top, and visa services on the island advise allowing most of a morning in high season.
Surat Thani Immigration posts notices on its website (suratthani.imm.police.go.th) and its Facebook page, Suratimmigration. Check both before you go, especially around a long weekend.
Can You Book an Appointment?
Immigration Division 6, which covers the south, has listed an online booking calendar for the Samui office, but the link returns an error, while the mainland Surat Thani office's calendar works and offers a tourism slot. Surat Thani Immigration's website also links its own app, SIMM HUB, whose store listing describes Fast Lane queue booking without saying which offices take it. I'd plan on walking in and taking a number.
The nearest thing to a booking is e-Extension, which decides your tourist extension online and leaves you one visit to collect the stamp.
The 30-Day Tourist Extension on Koh Samui
A visa exemption stamp or a 60-day tourist visa can be extended once, by up to 30 days, for ฿1,900, at the officer's discretion. On Samui that happens at the Mae Nam office. The 30 days are added from the end of your current stamp, not from the day you apply, so going a week early costs you nothing.
The Immigration Bureau's handbook for a tourism extension, which Surat Thani Immigration publishes on its own website, lists your passport and one copy, a TM.7 with a photo attached, a form acknowledging the penalties for overstaying, and the fee. Visa services on the island also advise copies of your other passport pages and proof of where you're staying.
1. Document Check and Queue Number
Take your passport, the completed TM.7 with its 4×6 cm photo, signed copies of your photo page and entry stamp (and your tourist visa or e-Visa if you have one), your hotel booking or your landlord's TM.30 receipt, and ฿1,900 in cash to the reception desk. Staff check the set and give you a number. The overstay acknowledgement the handbook lists is a short Immigration Bureau form that you sign with the application.
2. At the Counter
When your number is called, an officer takes your passport and documents, records your details with a photo, collects the ฿1,900 and gives you a receipt. The officer can ask for more evidence, such as an onward ticket.
3. The Stamp
If it's approved, the new permission is stamped into your passport, signed and handed back. Read the date before you leave the counter.
Applying Online with e-Extension
Samui is on the Immigration Bureau's online e-Extension system, run by VFS Global, which lists Surat Thani as Koh Samui and Koh Phangan only and gives the Mae Nam address as the place to collect the stamp. You apply at thaiextension.vfsevisa.com less than 45 days before your stamp runs out, pay ฿1,900 plus a ฿500 service fee, wait one to seven working days for the decision, and then go to Mae Nam once to have the extension stamped in. Surat Thani Immigration's website links straight to the system.
Complete documents don't guarantee the extension. The officer decides, the ฿1,900 isn't refunded if you're turned down, and an overstay costs ฿500 a day.
What to Bring for the Extension
A completed TM.7
Fill it in beforehand or ask for a blank at the office. My TM.7 guide walks through every field, including the Buddhist Era dates.
One 4×6 cm photo
Glued in the TM.7's photo box. It's larger than a passport photo, and the office's photo room can take one.
Passport and signed copies
Your passport plus signed copies of the photo page and your latest entry stamp, and the visa page or e-Visa if you hold a tourist visa.
฿1,900 in cash and your address
Plus your hotel's name and address or your landlord's TM.30 receipt.
Already used your extension, or want to know how a run from the island compares?
The 90-Day Report (TM.47)
Anyone permitted to stay longer than 90 days has to report their address every 90 days on a TM.47. You can report from 15 days before the due date to 7 days after it, and late, you must report in person and pay a ฿2,000 fine, according to the Immigration Bureau's handbook. A tourist on the exemption plus one extension never reaches 90 days and doesn't report.
On Samui you report at the Mae Nam office with your passport, a completed TM.47 and your last receipt, and the handbook puts the counter work at four minutes. There's no fee, and someone else can report for you unless you're late.
Online and by Post
Surat Thani Immigration's website links the Bureau's online TM.47 system. Expat groups elsewhere in Thailand report that it won't take your first report after you enter the country, so plan on the first one after every arrival in person. By post, the handbook lets you send the TM.47 from 15 days before the due date by registered mail, with signed copies of your photo page, latest arrival stamp and visa, to the office at 333 Maenam Road, Soi 1, Moo 1, Mae Nam, Koh Samui, Surat Thani 84330.

Re-Entry Permits
A re-entry permit keeps an extension or a long-stay permission valid while you leave Thailand and come back. It costs ฿1,000 for a single re-entry or ฿3,800 for multiple re-entries, and the fee isn't refunded if the application is refused. You need a TM.8 with one 4×6 cm photo and your passport, and you apply at the office where you live, which on Samui means Mae Nam. I'd get one there before the day you fly rather than count on a counter at the airport.
TM.30 and Residence Certificates
TM.30 is the notice that whoever houses a foreigner files with immigration within 24 hours of the guest moving in. A hotel files it for you. In a villa, condo or house rental the owner is responsible, either in person at Mae Nam, by registered post, or online through the Immigration Bureau's TM.30 system, which Surat Thani Immigration's website links. Ask your landlord for the receipt and keep a copy with your passport papers.
Residents report that the Mae Nam office also issues the residence certificate, the letter that confirms your address for a Thai driver's license or a bank.
Retirement, Marriage, Education, Business and DTV Extensions
Long-stay extensions for Samui residents are handled at Mae Nam, where the local guide describes a separate queue for long-term matters at reception. If your application is accepted for consideration, Surat Thani Immigration's online status check tracks it with your passport number and the receipt number. The requirements for each visa are on my visa requirements guide, and DTV holders, whose 180 days per entry can be extended once, should call 077 423 440 before going.
The Koh Phangan and Koh Tao Offices
Koh Phangan has had its own immigration office since 20 May 2021, at 13/47 Moo 2, phone 077 377 947, so Phangan residents don't cross to Samui for the tourist extension. Phangan guides place it in the police station grounds outside Thong Sala, about 1.5 km inland from the pier. Its Google listing gives the same weekday hours as Samui's, and e-Extension lists it as a place to collect the stamp. The guides say it handles tourist extensions and 90-day reports, and that long-stay extensions went to Samui in 2021, so call before going for anything else. The guides add that the office enforces a dress code and has sent people in tank tops away to change. A coworking space there also listed an STM.2 acknowledgement form and the TM.30 receipt among the papers it asks for.
Koh Tao got its own immigration office on 12 July 2021, on the 2nd floor of the district office building in Moo 3, phone 077 456 947. Surat Thani Immigration doesn't publish its hours or services, but a Koh Tao travel agency reports that tourist extensions and 90-day reports are done there, so call first. Koh Tao isn't on the e-Extension list, and VFS lets a tourism applicant collect the stamp at a different office from the one where they applied, so an online application from Koh Tao means a trip to Phangan or Samui for the stamp.
Opening Hours, Holidays and When to Go
The office works Monday to Friday only, opening at 08:30, closing for lunch from 12:00 to 13:00 and stopping at 16:30. It closes on weekends and Thai public holidays, and I'd avoid the first working day after a long weekend.
A local guide advises arriving early, or just before the lunch break ends, because anyone arriving after about 10:00 risks being asked to come back after lunch. I'd be on Soi 1 before 08:30 and never leave an extension to the last working day before a holiday.
Out-of-Date Information to Ignore
The office moved from Nathon to its building in Mae Nam on 18 August 2018, and some pages give the year as 2016. Any page, map pin or directory sending you to Nathon or Ang Thong for an extension is out of date, and so is one listing a district office address in Mae Nam or a phone number other than 077 423 440. Surat Thani Immigration's contact page lists no office in Nathon today.
Pages written before 15 September 2026 describe extending a 60-day exemption, and the exemption is now 30 days. Checklists that ask for a copy of your departure card date from before the TDAC replaced the paper card. Older Phangan and Koh Tao advice to take the ferry to Samui for every visa matter dates from before those islands' offices opened in 2021.
Where to go next.
