Khao Kheow Open Zoo

4.4(23,511 reviews)

Set against lush hills in Chon Buri province, roughly an hour from Pattaya, Khao Kheow Open Zoo spans an enormous area and houses a wide variety of wildlife — from African mammals and white rhinos to tigers, apes, penguins, and deer. Unlike a conventional zoo, the open format gives the park a more natural, immersive feel, and hands-on experiences such as animal feeding and up-close encounters with rare and endangered species set it apart from typical wildlife attractions in the region. The park is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00, and visitors consistently note that a full walking tour can take upwards of seven hours — the grounds are genuinely vast. Renting a golf cart on arrival is strongly recommended, as it allows far greater coverage of the park in a manageable timeframe; those who walk without one report seeing only a fraction of the exhibits. Highlights frequently mentioned by visitors include feeding deer, encountering white rhinos, and the penguin interaction experience. Tickets for foreign adult visitors are priced at 350 THB, and advance booking online can help avoid queues at the entrance. Arriving early in the day is advisable to make the most of the full opening hours, particularly for families with children. Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are practical necessities given the size of the grounds and the largely outdoor environment. The official website at kkopenzoo.com has current pricing and booking information.

Visitor Reviews

I am very happy with the visit to the zoo! Had a leisure walk around and we took almost 7+ hrs (walking) First, tickets, foreigners are at bht350 each adult. If you didn't reserve tickets in advance, buy from a counter prior to entry. The gate staff will be happy to guide your driver if you go by grab. Lots of parking spaces. Take a picture of your ticket just in case. Collect a map of the place to help guide your around. Look out for the show time of the day. Why I truly like this place and areas that may not be to some visitor's expectation: 1. Great open zoo as it's called! Watch the animals at close distance and some without barriers like the deers. 2. Buy food for animals at 30 or 50 BHT depending on types which is really amazing especially for children. 3. Must go: the savannah area! 4. Must go: see Moo Deng! ;) 5. Lots of different species, huge variety, quantity for some species are not many but really enjoyed the variety. 6. Love most: the nature and openness of the zoo. Really fantastic 7. The show may not be like showcase of animals skills but opportunities to feed and see and sometimes touch the animals up close. Really great experience still 8. The show of elephant relaxing is interesting as you can choose to go basement to watch the elephant enjoying inside the water 9. The zoo has many drinks and snacks and lunch places. Had a good coffee at The Hive, right next to the penguin show place. 10. Big space so consider renting the golf cart or electric cart if you need some help with saving leg muscles. The electric cart can only enter the green zone. The zoo has 2 zones, green and red. Green has more species. Red has more areas including training areas/stay and a great tiger village area. The red would require a little more walking as more slopes. The nice weather in Nov really helps with the enjoyment of the zoo. Staff are all very friendly and helpful! Consider bringing food for a little picnic while enjoying the place. But watch out for monkeys as they are freely roaming and may snatch your stuff!

Huge open style zoo with lots to see. The best option is to rent a golf cart. We spent two hours shopping between exhibits and saw about 20% of the zoo. The highlights were feeding the deer, seeing Moodeng (baby pygmy hippo), lemur Island, Tiger Valley and the lake - wish we had time to do the zip line! I liked this zoo better than Melbourne zoo, Werribee and Chiang Mai Zoo. If you walk, you will likely only get to see the green zone. However, the pink zone offers some of the better and more picturesque enclosures and a wide variety of animals including a Gaur encloser and massive bird aviary. Downsides. The monkeys are little thieves stealing both our kids icecreams. The penguin enclosure is very dirty and needs renewal as does the space for the penguin show. The road in the pink zone is shared between golf carts and cars/mini buses. It felt like most drivers had road range trying to pass us in the cart. The mini buses also drove aggressively, cutting us off and blocking the road.

We had such a fun day at Khao Kheow Open Zoo — it’s one of the best wildlife outings near Pattaya! The park is huge and beautifully set against lush hills, so it feels more like a nature adventure than just a zoo. There are tons of animal species to see (from giraffes and rhinos to elephants and lemurs), and numerous opportunities to get close — like feeding giraffes or deer — which made the visit really memorable.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
