Maenam Morning Market

4.4(385 reviews)

Tucked into the quiet Mae Nam village on Koh Samui's northern coast, this working neighbourhood market draws both locals doing their weekly shop and visitors looking for an unfiltered glimpse of everyday island life. Unlike the island's more tourist-oriented markets, it operates on a genuinely local scale, with vendors selling fresh tropical fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, meat, and a small selection of seafood alongside prepared Thai breakfast dishes such as sticky rice, curry, and freshly pressed coconut milk. The atmosphere is unpretentious and community-focused. Stalls are tightly packed and colourful, with produce displayed in the open-air style typical of Thai fresh markets. Visitors can graze on local breakfast fare, including a popular stall serving traditional half-boiled eggs and local coffee. It is worth noting that meat and seafood are sold without refrigeration, which is standard for markets of this type but may be relevant for some visitors. Good to know: The market runs daily from 4am to 10am, but the best selection and liveliest atmosphere are found between 5am and 7am, with many vendors beginning to pack up well before the official closing time. Bring cash in Thai baht, as card payments are not accepted. Mae Nam is roughly 20 minutes from central Chaweng by scooter or taxi.

Visitor Reviews

Fantastic fresh market! The feeling of real Thailand for me. A great selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat, tofu, bean sprouts and so much more. Three booths sell fresh coconut milk, so delicious and saves you alot of work if you make it yourself. Drinking coconuts are in abundance too and the cheapest we found in Samui (10/15/20 baht) Few Breakfast/ tea/ coffee/ shakes stalls, all smells great. Some traditional Thai dessert booths as well. The restroom near parking lot is very clean (and free). Enough space to park your bike around the market or parking lot. There's a traffic policeman outside the market, very helpful. Perfect morning market, another strong reason that makes me wish I lived here. I was too shy to take photos 🙈

I love shopping here — it’s such a great way to connect with the local community and discover real Thai flavors. The prices are fair, the selection is fantastic, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. If you’re staying nearby and enjoy morning markets, this one is a must-visit!

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls

Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.

Arrive Early or Late

Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.

Be Cautious with Tailors

Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
