San Chao Jao Eng Sae Mae Nam

4.7(66 reviews)

Tucked into a small Chinatown pocket near Mae Nam Beach on Koh Samui's northern coast, this vibrant Chinese shrine is a place of worship that doubles as one of the area's most visually striking cultural landmarks. The temple complex is compact but richly decorated, with bold colors and illuminated red lanterns that come alive in the evening, creating an atmosphere visitors consistently describe as magical. A separate sala sits closer to the beachfront, adding to the sense of a layered, thoughtfully arranged site. The shrine draws both worshippers and curious travelers, and its proximity to the beach makes it an easy addition to a Mae Nam afternoon. It has hosted Chinese New Year celebrations that attract strong community participation, and the surrounding streets are lined with local restaurants and cafes that add further character to the visit. The site appears to be accessible most times of day based on visitor experience, though no official opening hours are confirmed. Those arriving by car should be prepared for narrow streets and limited parking in the area, so visiting on foot or by motorbike is a practical option. Thursday evenings are a particularly rewarding time to visit, as a walking street market sets up nearby from around 5pm, combining a cultural stop with a lively local market experience in one outing. Modest, respectful dress is advisable when entering any area of active worship.

Visitor Reviews

The place is a bit tricky to reach by car, because as everywhere narrow streets and little space for parking cars... 🙄 This very small and very colorful shrine is only a few meters from Maenam Beach away... For a short visit you can have a look at it... Between the Shrine and the Beach there is a Coffee bar, there you can have a cool drink, after the "Shrine Tour". We liked it. 😎

The Temple itself is small but attractive, as is the Sala closer to the beach. On Thursday evening there is a walking street market....starting around 5 pm... this is a good time to visit. Some photos taken during Chinese new year

Wow, what an incredible shrine/temple! 🥰 Beautiful at night and day, seemed to be open each time I visited, it is truly unique! Definitely worth a visit, right near the beach and has parking near by ✨️🙌

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
