Pai Rider

5.0(65 reviews)

Pai runs on scooters, and every year people rent one having never touched a throttle. That's how the bandaged arms happen. This is the fix: a family-run riding school for absolute beginners, where you learn the basics on the flat before anyone lets you near a bend.

The instructor everyone names is Thunder, sometimes alongside Som. The pattern in the reviews is consistent. Throttle, turning, braking, how to read situations you'll actually meet on the road, then a practice ride out on the country roads once he's satisfied you won't drop it. Riders who'd never sat on a scooter before say they felt ready to rent one the same day. There's also warmth here that goes past the lesson: lifts back to hotels, a coconut while you wait, lunch at his favourite spot. It reads like a family business that genuinely doesn't want you hurt.

You can rent from them afterwards too, which people say is quick and easy. Book the lesson for your first day in Pai, not your last, so you've got the rest of the trip to use it.

Kru Thunder is a really great guy. He very thoroughly explained to me the operations of the scooter and took me on a practice drive through the country roads. He is very careful to make sure you do not crash. After the scooter driving lessons he even offered to buy me lunch at his favorite restaurant and shared with me his life story. When I dropped off the scooter after my rental he offered to drive me back to my hotel. He even gave me a coconut to drink while I waited. By the end of my vacation in Pai Thailand I was a skilled scooter driver. Thunder really cares about his customers and their well being. He is very kind. ~ Sirius Cyrus

Brilliant instructor is thunder, taught the basics, understanding the throttle, turning and braking and then when confident in our ability took us on the road. Real confidence booster, couldn't recommend more if you want to learn how to ride a scooter. From no confidence to being sure in my ability, top guy too!

He was a great teacher. I had never driven any type of motorcycle or scooter before today. I felt comfortable enough to rent one after one class!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Popular Activities Online

Booking platforms like GetYourGuide give you instant confirmation and, on many activities, free cancellation — and you can read recent reviews before committing. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
