Practical guide
Pai to Chiang Rai
Down the 762 curves and north again, one long day by van
Take a Through Van, or Two Tickets via Chiang Mai
Pai to Chiang Rai is about 270 to 310 km, and there's no bus, train or flight that does it in one hop the way the Chiang Mai routes do. Every option starts back down Route 1095, the road of 762 curves, before turning north. The easy way is a through van. Terminal Green leaves Pai at 07:00, 09:30 and 11:30 for about ฿650–700 and is scheduled at 6 hours 35, and Pai Friendly Tour's VIP van leaves at 10:00 and is due in Chiang Rai at 15:30 for ฿720.
Check live Pai → Chiang Rai times and seats on 12Go
Both run late more often than not, and several passengers on the Terminal Green vans this year were moved to a second van in Chiang Mai. The cheap way is two tickets, the Prempracha van to Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal and the Green Bus on to Chiang Rai's downtown terminal, about 8.5 hours and ฿410–550 in all. I'd take the two tickets and leave Pai by 08:00. Below are every through van, the connection in Chiang Mai, private cars, where you land in Chiang Rai, and the trip the other way.

Terminal Green at 07:00, 09:30 and 11:30 (about ฿650–700), Aya Service at 07:00 (about ฿700–870), Pai Friendly Tour at 10:00 (฿720) and K Buddy from 07:00 (about ฿1,190). After 11:30 there's nothing through to Chiang Rai the same day.
Add an hour to the timetable
Reviews on 12Go this year put the vans an hour or so late, and some pick up more passengers in north Chiang Mai on the way.
Two tickets via Chiang Mai is about ฿410–550
Prempracha's van to Arcade (about ฿150, hourly from 07:00), then the Green Bus from Terminal 3 (฿260–400, 13 a day to 18:00) to Chiang Rai's Terminal 1 beside the Night Bazaar.
A private car is about ฿4,000–8,400
About 5.5 to 6 hours door to door, with stops where you want them. Split between three or four, it's the comfortable choice.
Check where your van drops you
The Green Bus ends at Terminal 1 in town. Terminal Green's vans end at Terminal 2 or the Central Chiangrai mall, both on the highway south of town, so budget a Grab on top.
November to February is the easy season
From May to October rain makes Route 1095 slick, and from mid-February to April smoke from the burning season hazes the views.

The Through Vans
Terminal Green is the one most people book. Its vans leave its office in the center of Pai at 07:00, 09:30 and 11:30, are scheduled at 6 hours 35 minutes, and cost about ฿650–700 depending on the seller. They're sold as direct, but several passengers between February and June this year wrote that they changed to a second, more crowded van in Chiang Mai, and one said the drop-off was a mall on the highway. Terminal Green also sells a longer run to the Chiang Khong border, about 8.5 hours, if Laos is next.
Pai Friendly Tour's VIP minivan leaves the Waykeeper office at 10:00 and is due at its Chiang Rai office at 15:30, for ฿720. It's the fastest on paper and rated a little higher on 12Go, but recent passengers say it stops in north Chiang Mai to pick people up and arrived about an hour late. Aya Service runs at 07:00 for about ฿700–870, and K Buddy at 07:00, 08:30 and 12:30 for about ฿1,190, about 8 hours. Ask about bags when you book, because one review this year describes a row over a luggage fee at the office.
Whichever van you take, plan on arriving an hour after the time on the ticket, and don't book anything in Chiang Rai for that evening that you can't move.
Two Tickets via Chiang Mai
This is the way I'd do it. It costs less, it takes about as long as the through vans once their delays are counted, and the second half is a full-size bus instead of a van. Take Prempracha's van from Pai's bus station on the main street, hourly from 07:00 for about ฿150 at the counter, to Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal, about 3.5 to 4 hours. The Green Bus to Chiang Rai leaves Terminal 3, the Green Bus building at the same Arcade terminal, 13 times a day until 18:00, for ฿260–290 in Express class and ฿360–400 in VIP.
The 07:00 van reaches Arcade at about 11:00, in time for the 12:15 VIP, in Chiang Rai at about 15:35. The 08:00 van reaches it at about 12:00, in time for the 13:00 VIP, in at about 16:20. The bus ends at Terminal 1 beside the Night Bazaar, walking distance from most hotels, which the through vans don't do. 12Go also sells the two as one ticket at 09:00, about 9 hours with an hour's wait in Chiang Mai, for about ฿510–520, though you still change on your own.
By Private Car
A private car is the one way to do it without a change or a pickup detour. It takes about 5.5 to 6 hours door to door and costs about ฿4,000–8,400 for the car on 12Go, depending on its size, and guesthouses in Pai arrange them too. Split four ways, the cheaper cars come to about ฿1,000–1,100 a head, not far above a through-van seat, and you can stop at the White Temple, 13 km before Chiang Rai, on the way in.

Arriving in Chiang Rai
Where you land depends on what you booked. The Green Bus calls at Terminal 2, 7 km south of town on the superhighway, and ends at Terminal 1 downtown beside the Night Bazaar, so stay on. Terminal Green's vans end at Terminal 2 or the Central Chiangrai mall, both on the highway south of town, and Pai Friendly Tour at the Waykeeper office in Chiang Rai. From the highway, a Grab into the center is quick. Our Chiang Rai travel guide covers the temples and how many nights to give it.
Chiang Rai to Pai
Going the other way, the vans leave Chiang Rai earlier. Pai Friendly Tour has three departures from its Chiang Rai office from 06:30, about 6 hours, from about ฿1,090, and K Buddy picks up from Chiang Rai hotels at 05:00 and reaches Pai at 13:00 for about ฿1,190. The last departure of any kind to Pai is about 16:30.
The two-ticket way works in this direction too. Take a morning Green Bus from Terminal 1 to Chiang Mai, about 3.5 to 4 hours, then a Prempracha or Aya van from the Arcade terminal up to Pai. 12Go's version leaves Terminal 1 at 10:00 and reaches Pai at 19:50 for about ฿850, which puts the 762 curves at dusk, so I'd take an earlier bus and make my own connection. A private car is about ฿4,600–5,100. Our Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai to Pai guides have both legs in full.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Pai to Chiang Rai.
By van. Terminal Green leaves at 07:00, 09:30 and 11:30 for about ฿650–700 and Pai Friendly Tour at 10:00 for ฿720, or take Prempracha's van to Chiang Mai and the Green Bus on for about ฿410–550 in all. A private car is about ฿4,000–8,400.
No full-size bus, only vans. Terminal Green and Pai Friendly Tour sell through vans, but they pass through or near Chiang Mai and some passengers are moved to a second van there. The only full-size bus on the route is the Green Bus from Chiang Mai.
About 5.5 to 7 hours on the through vans (plan on an hour late), about 8.5 hours with the change in Chiang Mai, and about 5.5 to 6 hours by private car.
In practice, yes. Every route leaves Pai on Route 1095 toward Chiang Mai, and the through vans go round its northern edge or into the city. Changing there yourself is the cheapest way.
About ฿4,000–8,400 for the car on 12Go, depending on its size, for about 5.5 to 6 hours door to door.
No. Pai's airport has had no scheduled flights since 2017, so a booking site showing one isn't real. Flying via Chiang Mai means connecting through Bangkok, which takes longer than the van.
It depends on the company. Terminal Green ends at Terminal 2 or the Central Chiangrai mall south of town, Pai Friendly Tour at the Waykeeper office, and the Green Bus via Chiang Mai at Terminal 1 beside the Night Bazaar.
Pai Friendly Tour's vans leave Chiang Rai from 06:30, about 6 hours, from about ฿1,090, or take the Green Bus to Chiang Mai and a Prempracha van up to Pai. The last departure of the day is about 16:30.
