Local Canteen Phuket
Tucked along Yaowarad Road in the heart of Old Phuket Town, this restaurant has earned a strong following among both Phuket locals and travellers for serving genuinely flavourful Thai dishes that stand apart from the more tourist-oriented options in the area. Visitors frequently note the unique flavour profiles and premium ingredients, with several regulars pointing out dishes they have not encountered elsewhere in Thai restaurants. The menu offers solid variety, portions are generous, and the overall cooking stays true to local Thai tradition without dressing things up unnecessarily. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a chill vibe and music that makes it equally suited to a leisurely lunch on weekends or a casual dinner on weeknights. Staff are consistently described as friendly and attentive without being intrusive, contributing to the easy, welcoming feel of the space. It works well for solo diners, couples, and small groups alike. Good to know: on weekdays, the restaurant opens at 4:00 PM, so plan accordingly if arriving outside of weekend hours. Saturday and Sunday service begins from noon, making those the more flexible days for a visit. The Yaowarad Road location is easily reached by tuk-tuk or taxi, and pairs naturally with a walk through Old Phuket Town. Checking the website at localcanteen.com before visiting is worthwhile for any updates to hours or seasonal menu changes.

Visitor Reviews
We love all the food on our table!! Was so lovely and wonderful dishes. As I’m a Phuket local I really appreciated that they created a nice local food like this. Really recommend. Must try.
My experience here was a 10/10. Came here for lunch but the vibe and the music was so chill! Everything we ordered was so yummy and the quality of the ingredients are really up there, I would definitely be recommending this place to my friends (both local and foreigners)! Super friendly and attentive staff — I can’t wait to come eat here again during my next visit to Phuket!
We chanced upon this understated named restaurant “Local Canteen” and had 6 super delicious dishes with unique flavours that we haven’t found in other Thai restaurants. The foods were so flavourful and every dish was a surprise in the best possible way! We wholeheartedly recommend this new experience Thai foods.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
