Things to Do in Chiang Rai

Three modern temples, a tea-terrace morning and a sunrise over Laos

By Mac Kiley · 5 min read · Updated Oct 27, 2026

The best things to do in Chiang Rai are its three modern temples, the dazzling White Temple (฿200), the sapphire Blue Temple (free) and Baan Dam's black houses (฿80), all within about 13 km of the clock tower. After those, I'd climb into the Guan Yin at Wat Huay Pla Kang, spend a morning on Choui Fong's tea terraces, and give a full day to the hills, either Doi Tung's gardens and Mae Salong or the Golden Triangle on the Mekong.

In the cool season, add a 05:00 start for the sea of mist at Phu Chi Fa. Evenings belong to the Night Bazaar, the clock tower's light show and, on Saturdays, the walking street. Two nights covers the temples, three adds the hills, and November to February is the time to go, before the burning-season smoke.

Key Facts

The White Temple costs ฿200 for foreigners

It doubled from ฿100 on 1 January 2026, and the ticket now includes the Cave of Art. Many guides still quote the old price. Thais, over-70s and children under 120 cm go free.

Most of the rest is free

The Blue Temple, Wat Huay Pla Kang's grounds, Wat Phra Kaew, the clock tower show, Singha Park's gates, Khun Korn Waterfall and Choui Fong's tastings cost nothing.

Be at the White Temple for 08:00

The day tours from Chiang Mai arrive mid-morning. The Blue Temple stays open to 20:00, so save it for late afternoon.

The hills need a driver or a tour

A ฿20–25 bus reaches the White Temple gate, and Grab covers town. Doi Tung, Mae Salong, Phu Chi Fa and the Golden Triangle are a day with a car, a scooter or a tour.

November to February is the season

December highs average about 28°C with nights near 15°C, and that's when Phu Chi Fa fills with mist. Smoke from the burning season hangs over the north from mid-February to April.

Two nights for the temples, three with the hills

A day and a half covers the three famous temples, Huay Pla Kang and the evenings. Add a day for Doi Tung and Mae Salong or the Golden Triangle.

  1. 1. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, About 13 km south of town

    Best overall

The reason most people come. Chalermchai Kositpipat's white temple, covered in mirrored glass, is reached over a bridge above a pit of reaching hands, and the murals inside mix Buddhist themes with superheroes and movie villains. He opened it to visitors in 1997 and it's still being built.

Foreigners pay ฿200, which now includes the Cave of Art. Cover shoulders and knees, and expect no photos inside the main hall.

    Getting there
    Local bus from Terminal 1, platform 8, ฿20–25, 19 a day from 06:15 to 17:50. Or a Grab.
    When to go
08:00 to about 17:30. Be there at opening.

  2. 2. Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, North edge of the center

    Best free temple

Deep sapphire blue and gold, with a big white Buddha inside, built by a student of the White Temple's artist. It's free, and I think it photographs better than the White Temple in soft evening light.

    Getting there
A short Grab or songthaew ride north of the clock tower.
    When to go
07:00 to 20:00. Late afternoon, after the coaches.

  3. 3. Baan Dam Museum, the Black House, About 13 km north of town

    Strangest sight

The national artist Thawan Duchanee's compound of around 40 black buildings, full of horns, skins, bones and carved furniture. It isn't a temple. It's the dark answer to Wat Rong Khun, and seeing both on one day is the best pairing in town.

Entry is ฿80, and under-12s go free.

    Getting there
Grab or scooter, about 20 minutes north on the main road.

  4. 4. Wat Huay Pla Kang, About 6 km northwest of the center

    Best view

A hillside temple with a giant white Guan Yin and a nine-tier pagoda. The grounds are free, and a lift inside the statue climbs to a viewing room for a small fee. It's the third of Chiang Rai's colored temples on most tours, and I'd put it ahead of anything else in town after the big three.

    Getting there
Grab or scooter, about 15 minutes.
    When to go
Late afternoon, for the light on the statue.

  5. 5. Choui Fong Tea Plantation, Mae Chan, north of town

    Best morning out

A working plantation of clipped green terraces with cafés set high enough to look over all of it. Tastings are free, and the shop's oolongs are what people carry home. Some dishes and teas sell out by mid-morning, so go early, and give it two hours.

Food and drinks are cash only.

    Getting there
By car, scooter or tour. It sits on the way to Doi Tung and Mae Salong, so combine them.

  6. 6. The Night Bazaar and the clock tower show, Town center

    Best evening

The Night Bazaar runs every evening beside the bus terminal, with a big food court of shared tables. A short walk away, the gold clock tower, another Chalermchai design from 2005, runs a short free light-and-music show at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00. It's a roundabout, so stand on a corner a few minutes early.

    Best market

On Saturdays Thanalai Road closes to traffic from 15:00 to 22:00 and becomes one long run of food, crafts and live music. It's too long to see all of it, so pick a direction. The tables fill early, so eat at 16:00 if you want a seat. On Sundays a smaller market takes over San Khong Noi Road.

    Best for history

Where lightning split a chedi in 1434 and revealed the Emerald Buddha, the image that now sits in Bangkok's Grand Palace. The one here is a replica. After the modern temples, the quiet is the reason to come, and there's a small two-floor museum. A ฿20 donation buys a merit set of candles, incense and flowers.

    Best rainy afternoon

Two small museums that explain what the temples don't. Oub Kham is a local teacher's collection of Lanna antiques, regalia and religious objects, shown room by room on a guided tour, for ฿300, open 08:00 to 17:00. The Hilltribe Museum on Thanalai Road, open 08:30 to 17:00, covers the highland peoples' crafts and daily life, and it's worth an hour before any village visit.

    Best day in the hills

Doi Tung was the Princess Mother's mountain home, and the royal villa and the Mae Fah Luang Garden around it are the finest gardens in the north. A combined ticket for the villa, the garden and two smaller sites is ฿220.

Mae Salong, about an hour and a quarter from town, is a hilltop village settled by Chinese nationalist soldiers and ringed by tea. There's no direct bus.

    Getting there
By car, scooter or tour, with Choui Fong on the way.

  12. 12. The Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen, About 70 km north, on the Mekong

    Three countries in one view

Where the Ruak meets the Mekong and Thailand, Laos and Myanmar face each other. The viewpoint and its souvenir stalls are quick, and plenty of people call them underwhelming. The Hall of Opium, a big museum on the region's opium history (฿200, closed Mondays), and a boat out on the river are what make the trip. The smaller House of Opium by the viewpoint is ฿50.

Pair it with the old walled town of Chiang Saen and its national museum just downstream.

    Getting there
About 1.5 hours by car, or a bus to Chiang Saen roughly every 30 minutes from Terminal 1 for ฿35–50.
    When to go
    Any day but Monday.
    Golden Triangle
    Golden Triangle

    4.3(16,923)Open 24 hours daily

  13. 13. Phu Chi Fa at sunrise, Far east of the province, on the Laos border

    Best sunrise

A 1,628 m ridge where, in the cool season, the valleys below fill with mist and the sun comes up over Laos. The gates open at 05:00 for that reason, and at midday it's just a hill. The last climb is short but steep, and it's far colder before dawn than anything in town, so bring a real jacket.

From December to February, wild Himalayan cherry blossoms along the road to Doi Pha Tang.

    Getting there
A predawn drive with a driver who knows the mountain roads, or stay nearby the night before.
    When to go
    November to February, at dawn.

  14. 14. Khun Korn Waterfall, About 30 km south

    Best forest walk

A waterfall of about 70 m at the end of a 1.4 km forest trail, about 30 minutes each way, and free. For a quieter fall, Huai Kaeo in Lam Nam Kok National Park has twin cascades and a loop through an Akha village.

    Getting there
Car or scooter, about 45 minutes.
    When to go
During and after the rains, July to November.

    4.6(1,562)Daily 08:00–16:30

  15. 15. Pa Tueng Hot Springs, Mae Chan district

    Best cool-season soak

A geothermal park with a geyser that shoots about 10 m into the air, free public pools, vents where locals boil eggs, and private onsen rooms for a fee. It suits a cold morning on the way north.

    When to go
November to February, when warm water meets cool air.

    4.3(1,337)Daily 09:00–18:00

  16. 16. Lalitta Café, Rim Kok, north of the river

    Best for photos

A garden of waterfalls, mist, koi ponds and Himmapan statues with cafés inside. The ฿60 entry comes off what you order. Go for the garden rather than the food, and go early, because weekend middays get crowded.

    When to go
08:00 to 19:30, best just after opening.

  17. 17. An ethical elephant day, Mae Yao and the hills west of town

    Best with elephants

Elephant Peace Project is run by a Karen family with a long mahout tradition, with no rides or shows, and it needs booking ahead because there are no walk-ins. Elephant Steps keeps four rescued elephants and small groups. Skip any camp that sells rides.

  18. 18. Wat Tham Pla and the road to Mae Sai, Mae Sai district, on the Myanmar border

    Best for the far north

A cave temple known as the Monkey Temple, where macaques will take food out of your hands, so keep bags closed. Inside are dim tunnels and a staircase up to a wide view. In Mae Sai itself, the glass Sky Walk at Wat Phra That Doi Wao looks over the border country.

Tham Luang, the cave where 12 boys and their coach were trapped in 2018, is in the same district. The first kilometer opens for guided visits from November to April and closes in the rains.

    Getting there
By car or tour, on the highway north. Combine with the Golden Triangle.

No temple or museum here publishes its fees online in English, so check at the gate. The White Temple's ฿200 has applied since 1 January 2026.

Free Things to Do in Chiang Rai

A day here can cost nothing but transport. The Blue Temple, Wat Huay Pla Kang's grounds, Wat Phra Kaew and the King Mangrai Monument are free, and so are the clock tower's three evening shows and both weekend markets. Out of town, Singha Park's gates, Khun Korn and Huai Kaeo waterfalls, Pa Tueng's public pools, Phu Chi Fa and Choui Fong's tastings cost nothing. The White Temple is the one big fee, and at ฿200 I'd still pay it.

Things to Do in Chiang Rai at Night

Evenings are small and walkable. Eat at the Night Bazaar's food court, catch the clock tower show at 19:00, 20:00 or 21:00, and on a Saturday walk the length of Thanalai Road's market. The Blue Temple stays open until 20:00, which makes it the one sight worth a dusk visit. Khao soi is probably my favorite northern dish, and Chiang Rai's night markets are an easy place to try it. For a bar after, our ranked list of Chiang Rai nightlife covers the live-music spots.

Long-Neck Villages and Hill Tribe Visits

Most day tours offer a stop at a Kayan village, where women wear brass neck coils and sell weaving along a path. I'd think hard before going. How the residents came to be here and what they earn from visitors is a real and unresolved question, and many visitors leave feeling it was staged. If you go, buy textiles directly from the women who made them, ask before every photo and accept a no.

For context first, the Hilltribe Museum in town explains the highland peoples' crafts and customs, and the Huai Kaeo waterfall walk passes through an Akha village on its own terms.

How Many Days and a Simple Plan

Two nights suits most trips, and three if you want the hills.

Day 1 for the Temples

An early bus to the White Temple for its 08:00 opening, Singha Park or Baan Dam after lunch, the Blue Temple in the late afternoon, then the Night Bazaar and the 20:00 clock tower show.

Day 2 in Town and Up the Guan Yin

Wat Phra Kaew and Oub Kham in the morning, Wat Huay Pla Kang in the late afternoon, and the walking street if it's Saturday.

Day 3 in the Hills or at the Border

Either Choui Fong, Doi Tung and Mae Salong, or Wat Tham Pla, Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle with Chiang Saen. Both are a full day with a driver or a tour. In the cool season, start this day at Phu Chi Fa instead.

Can You See Chiang Rai on a Day Trip From Chiang Mai?

Yes, but most of the day is in the van. The road is three to three and a half hours each way, so tours leave around 07:00 and get back around 19:00, and they cover the White and Blue temples and usually Huay Pla Kang. If you're heading north anyway, the Green Bus runs 13 times a day for ฿260–400 and two nights here sees the temples at opening time instead.

What I'd Skip

Any elephant camp that sells rides, and any tour that bundles one in. The Golden Triangle as a trip on its own, since the viewpoint is quick and it only earns the drive with the Hall of Opium, a boat and Chiang Saen. Phu Chi Fa outside the mist season, and March almost everywhere, when the smoke settles over the north.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Things to Do in Chiang Rai.

The White Temple, the Blue Temple and Baan Dam, the three modern sights within about 13 km of town. After those, Wat Huay Pla Kang's Guan Yin, the Night Bazaar and clock tower show, and a day in the hills at Choui Fong, Doi Tung and Mae Salong.

Two nights covers the temples, Huay Pla Kang and the evenings. A third adds the hills or the Golden Triangle, and in the cool season a dawn trip to Phu Chi Fa.

฿200 for foreign visitors since 1 January 2026, up from ฿100, including the Cave of Art. Thais, visitors over 70 and children under 120 cm go free. It opens 08:00 to about 17:30.

The Blue Temple, Wat Huay Pla Kang's grounds, Wat Phra Kaew, the King Mangrai Monument, the clock tower shows, the weekend markets, Singha Park's gates, Khun Korn Waterfall, Pa Tueng's public pools and Choui Fong's tastings.

The Night Bazaar's food court every evening, the clock tower light show at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00, the Saturday Walking Street on Thanalai Road from 15:00, and the Blue Temple until 20:00.

At dawn between November and February, when the valleys fill with mist. The gates open at 05:00. Cherry blossom lines the road to Doi Pha Tang from December to February.

Elephant Peace Project, run by a Karen family with no rides or shows, needs booking ahead. Elephant Steps keeps four rescued elephants in small groups. Skip anywhere that sells rides.

Think it through first. The ethics of these villages are genuinely disputed, and many visitors find them staged. If you go, buy weaving directly from the women and ask before taking photos.

November to February, when it's dry with cool nights. Avoid mid-February to April if you can, when burning-season haze settles over the north, worst in March.
